My first build
« on: January 14, 2014, 08:13:39 am »
Hi all. I have been browsing around the forum for a little while, and I wanted to say thanks. This is a great resource that answered a lot of my questions before starting on my build.

I got an idea a few months back that I really wanted an arcade cabinet in my basement, something from the early 90s. I toyed around with buying either a Simpsons or MKII machine. After some initial research I decided I would rather have a MAME cabinet over a dedicated one. I did not have the heart to cut up and convert an already existing machine, building one from scratch will make a good project anyway. I am building a "sort of " MKII cabinet. I made some slight modifications of the Jakobud MKI plans to make things a bit easier on myself (e.g. reducing the width between sides to 24" from 25", making the lower front area for the coin door flat).

I picked up a refurbished pc and 20" 4:3 lcd monitor from craigslist, a byo X arcade kit, and an X arcade coin door. I read mixed reviews on the X arcade byo kit, with console lag. I only intend to run it from the computer, soon we'll see how well it works. X arcade only offered a single coin door, but it seems a lot of the 2 player versions of 4 player games work out alright. The order from X arcade included a copy of maximus. I've got all the software up and running I'm just waiting to wire up the controls once the cabinet is ready.

I have a healthy amount of the cabinet built and routed. My T molding is sitting in the corner waiting to be put in. Soon I will need to prime/paint, and order the CP overlay so I can figure out the button placement. Pictures to follow.

Like mcseforsale said, this board is a trove of info and ideas.  Keep in mind there is a lot of ego and, ahem, "personality" among some of the guys here so don't take anything personally.

Be careful.  MAME is a gateway drug.  You start with one MAME cab, next thing you know you've got a basement packed with dedicated cabs, a couple pins, a jukebox, a mini-bar, and a pissed off wife.

  • These words should be replaced with better ones.

Very nice start. What kind of stick, buttons, pcb are you planning to use in the CP?
