Its no biggie ed12, I was just going to poke around inside the main binary and see if i could remove the hard drive check for Bob. Looks like he gave up anyway, so im not gonna bother with this old crap software. Busy poking around 2014 at the moment. Might release a script to patch the iso so it installs on any pc. No original copyright code in the script what so ever so completely legal.

omg, no, I haven't given up!  I'm just at a loss as to where to look, myself.  I think these should all be un-protected now that they don't support it, otherwise they'll all be gone.

If you can make a 1:1 image copy of the hard drive I can fix it so it likes all key versions.

Sounds good ed12, im digging through my maxx parts trying to build a testing rig. I may have to make an adapter for the power supply.

I dont really need to get a working system running to find the hardware checks, but it sucks not knowing if the patch works when you cant test it on the original hardware.

I would need the files that get installed to the hard drive. I tried to install the software shawn gave me with a XL mobo/IO board but it hangs at the install progress bar.

ed12, I meant you have my email to send me the dropbox links. I wasnt sure if you wanted to post or send the links in PM since you wanted to send the .bins in email.

And yes i will figure everything out. I just need to get the data out of the images. See with force and ion merit used linux partimage image format. You have to create a loopback to get the data out of the images if you dont have official hardware to install from disc. I know how to patch the disc's for force and ion so i dont have to do loopback, but havent had enough time to play with XL and maxx to figure it out yet.

long time lurker, first time poster - any development on this front? my megatouch was damaged in a move, and I'm not about to waste all the $$$ I spent on it. Looking to get the software that I've paid for to run on non-megatouch hardware.  let me know if there is anyone working on this, and I will be happy to contribute

First, What version software are you running? Second, What was damaged?

If your monitor is broken (glass or yoke) its going to cost you more in parts/shipping then its worth.

I make 15" lcd touch screen units that you just drop into these old cabinets.

Bigger screen, alot lighter, more game options and can be converted to latest Force and Ion versions with minimal hardware upgrades.

Maxx.  The screen is cracked and motherboard won't power up (even tried switching PSU's).  Thinking it's a lost cause.

I read in this thread you had been working on a bypass. I was able to remove a couple of checks to boot VMware into X and see a "touchscreen controller error" message. I tried making a dummy /dev/twscreen0(1,2,3,4) device and now I just see an all-black screen and no error.  Wanted to see if you ever got any further.

what i would do
is hook an lcd display to it first, this will tell u if the mobo is out..
them mobo boards are perty rugged, they can as a rule take a kicking and keep on ticking..
if u do not get signal to the lcd then back track..remove mobo, and psu
and set it on a bench, then making everything is down tight, try it again
if it come's up then try what mike said above about swapping to fource
and or go to flebay and get a used monitor with the overlay on  it..
there cheap enough now..
lord know's u can buy a complete and running maxx for under 400.00
about 300.00 + shipping
but i would do the test's first

Thanks for the advice. I fix computers on the side, so I'm pretty well-versed at troubleshooting them.  I tried hooking up the mobo to another power supply but it will not power up with either power supply, which leads me to believe the board is fried. The megatouch PSU will power a regular desktop board. I don't want to shell out $300 for a new machine, that's why I'm trying my best to open up the software .

ok fiar enough
but there is a boat load of test's u can do to what look's like a dead mobo
before thinking it is dead
a=reseat
b=remove bios bat
c=remove ram
what u want to know is where is my beep
short the power  on pin's to see if the supply will come on
short the psu power on wire to ground to make sure the psu is indeed working
remove harddrive to see if it is pulling the board down
remove riser card to see if it is pulling mobo down
u see there is a boat load of test's to go through first
before u decide to play with the layer s/w of merit..no matter how versed u are in linux
1 wrong kernel push and u own a drive full of non working s/w
then u truly will need a disk..which btw there is no such thing as a rescue disk for maxx
ie the layer is put on by merit
and the game is over ran on that layer
what u get is the basic game game's disk
but by no mean's do u get the format disk
merit held that back..and under request we are not to talk about the layer

seems to me like the CD has all the different partition images on there. in /lib/images/partX.gz.000 etc. I was able to copy these to a new drive on vmware and booted into linux.

all of that is correct
but u mised a point
the underlaying layer >makes it a merit xx drive format<
is missing
so the disk is basic game disk with all the :call's: to the .img it will and dose expect
>merit<...
its about that simple..
ask yourself a question before u answer
why do think there is a hudge call for used merit drive's that work ?
point to flebay ?merit and or megatouch/merit
u will catch on fast

Using partimage (not the CD installer), I restored all the images to their respective partitions.  I also made a swap partition on hda3.  On first boot, it complained about not finding hda7, which I then created.  After rebooting again, it told me my /var partition (hda7) was corrupted, and it restored it for me.  Seems like /var contains the actual megatouch binary "start".  As far as I can tell, all the files are there.

I'm not sure what you mean about an extra layer.  Honestly, I think there is a demand for these drives because nobody knows how to correctly partition one.  I wish I had a working machine so I could test my theory.

What ed is trying to say is that the firmware on the MAXX systems hard drives are modified. You need to change the hard drives model/serial ID's. Or find the hard drive ID check in the software and patch it out.

I dont have a Maxx mobo, hard drive, or key to test either.

Also, since your touchscreen monitor is broke you cant use the software anyway untill you replace it. No way getting around using the software without a touchscreen.

You could buy a used 15" 3m microtouch capacitive touchscreen, Ion compatiable mobo, and an Ion key for less then the shipping cost of these old 13" Maxx monitors.

Thanks a lot for the help. I guess in theory, this would be all I need to build a new megatouch from scratch, if I can get the hard drive working? Also, how does the IO board plug into a non-merit motherboard?

Just realized i linked the wrong mobo. You need the one with built in video card. Asus A7n8x-vm or A7n8x-LA Heres the correct link:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Asus-HP-A7N8X-LA-5187-5608-REV-3-00-Socket-462-Desktop-Motherboard-AMD-CPU-/261628820544?pt=Motherboards&hash=item3cea4afc40

But yes those parts are the main parts you need for Ion software. Ion software will run on any hard drive. You would need a IDE hard drive or you could use a SATA hard drive with a IDE to SATA adapter.

Also the Ion IO board uses usb port to connect to the Motherboard.

force 2005+ and all ion software will run on any harddrive.

2004 and earlier, all maxx, and all XL software must be run from a merit branded drive.

the merit hard drives have the firmware modified so that the software can check and see if the drive is from merit or not. if you view the model information on the drive in the bios you can see the manufacturer says "merit00" instead of "maxtor" or other similar string.

Is there an echo in here?

I was able to remove a couple of checks to boot VMware into X and see a "touchscreen controller error" message. I tried making a dummy /dev/twscreen0(1,2,3,4) device and now I just see an all-black screen and no error.  Wanted to see if you ever got any further.

Interesting...
I tried installing a "patched ISO" via VMware once but never got to the "touchscreen controller error" The error i got seem to be related to cd/dvd drive emulation. I gave up on trying virtual emulation since i (at the time) had a few force and ion systems to test with. Currently im down to only having official Ion systems/hardware so my resources are limited.

I do however know how to patch out that touchscreen error on force software. You would be left with a main screen with no way to navigate though. Also, I never had a Maxx system/hardware so i cant help with Maxx.

Ion 2011+ is even easier to bypass hardware checks. And you can even use "upright" XL/Maxx touchscreens (17/19") and any XL/Maxx touchscreen controller (SMT3 "white" controller) This is not possible with earlier Ion software or any force software, atleast without major patching of binaries and manually adding driver modules. (Not worth the effort in my opinion.)

Essentially, you could buy a XL/Maxx upright cabinet on craigslist (local) and throw those ion parts in and have yourself an up to date 2011-2012 software ion for way less then ed12's quote of $300-400. Just some food for thought.

Which version were you able to patch? Want to work together to see if we can figure this out?
