PS3 based twin driving cab
« on: December 07, 2013, 12:58:37 pm »
Hi guys, just a quick upload to show off my new driving cab. I decided to build a console based cab this time, just in time for the Gran Turismo 6 release on PS3.

As per usual I built this on a budget:
Cabinet $25
LCD's $200
PS3's $100, both were modded so flashed original firmware to allow network play via PSN
Logitech Driving force pro's $100
Audio amps and upgraded speakers and subs $100
Random bits and pieces and artwork $100
All in all just over $600 total build cost across a 4 week period of a few hours per night. Sold it online for 3k, new owner very happy :)

I swapped it for a PC running SSFIVAE Taito X emulation, total PC build cost was $25.

Its a Battle Gear 2 cabinet, the mainboards had failed and the vendor had removed the nanao screens for another use. There is nobody in NZ who can repair those boards so they goto Aussie for repair at a cost of 10k each! Not worth it for an old and somewhat crap game.

Yes, I wish I had room to keep it, would have been the perfect candidate for a dual console and PC cabinet
Thanks

That's such a cool looking cabinet!  I love the side "fairings"!  Great job!  WOW!

I'm searching out speakers and AMPs for my scratch built cabinet (I will hopefully be posting total build shortly).  My cabinet is using a Midway Cruisin USA Exotica seat which has built in head rest speakers and a small sub at the bottom back of the seat.  What AMP/speakers did you go with?  Do you have any recommendations for my seat speaker setup?  Did you go with 5.1 surround or just wire up the head rest speakers to the front left/right (is that called quad hi-fi stereo?)?  I'm not sure how much a difference 5.1 would really help on GT or even GRID.  I'm currently just using headphones in-between working on it.

Its interesting that that thing is really just one huge cabinet - not two pushed together.

I still want to build a second cabinet to match my first one for two player action - but dang they're expensive to build.

That's gotta be tough to get through doorways!!!... Why don't my projects ever turn out so inexpensive and profitable :banghead:

Hello
When you said that you Flash a new firmware to go on the psn network,
Why do you need to do that?

I dont understand how you connect the 2 ps3 together.

do this cabinet need to be connected to internet to be able to play??

Yes they would need to be connected to the net through PSN for multiplayer.  Very very very few games have lan support on the ps3. Also it states they were originally modded and that the original firmware was then loaded back.  Modded PS3's do not like connecting to PSN, Yes it can be done but like the 360 you risk getting the device banned.

Thanks. I just ran the headrest speakers from a cheap generic 2.1 12v amp. The front speakers ran off the installed TV screens so yes it was quad hifi. The amps ran off the audio out on the tv so that all audio volume could be controlled via remote :)

Thanks
Gene

Hi, it fits through a standard New Zealand door way, thank the local council and building code :)

This is just simply freaking beautiful.  I like how you sold it for 3K!  I want to make one of this(single player) but I have no idea where to start for a sit down cabinet.  Time to start digging after seeing this.  I would not make it nearly as amazing as yours but something that functions and that I can play my PS3 or PS4 games with.

Thanks guys. I just flicked through my phone and I didn't take many if any build pics. I build a cab a week so don't have time to be stopping and starting all the time :(

I will try to detail my next twin racer build.
