Scale Gameboy arcade
« on: October 24, 2013, 04:29:07 pm »
We had a break, but now we're back...........The bartop isn't even finished yet and we've started the next project

it will be free standing, have a green/black hyperspin theme, and two nes controllers so we can play nes!

we're thinking of having a remove-able cartridge as well......

watch this space.

The hardest part of this build will be to find a 17", 160x144 grayscale monitor.  ;)

Yvan is right. What is you plan for the monitor? Even if you go with a nice LCD is it going to have a gray scale tint to it? It would be cool to keep it scale but it would kill playing NES and other games with it.

In all seriousness I think the major problem will finding a GB emulator that will run at full screen res and not look goofy.  Good idea.  Looking forward to seeing this one completed.

I think this is super cool.
Perhaps GameBoy emulation might not look that good, but I'm sure its still worth playing.
I think this would look amazing in someones games room.
I'm looking forward to watching this come together.
F'n cool!

Bonus design points if the speaker is place on the bottom right.  Are you going to add that weird chin in that same spot?  What is its depth going to be?

Planned a build like this with my lady friend. If I build it it would have a real GBC in it and woudl hack it to output to VGA, so no emulator. This way the giant game carts I make for it would really work!

Damn these giant gameboy builds makes me want to go back to my workshop in the USA  :hissy:

I went to a gamestop or gameworks what ever was next to hollywood video that had a neat setup.  It was a 4' by 3' (whatever scale is) that hung from the corner like a hospital TV.  It was promoting the Nintendo Game Cube and Gameboy player along with the wavebird.

Holy cow, it's going to take quadruple-D batteries for that thing!

Bonus points if you really put a scaled batteries compartment on the back with removable panel and all details.  ;D

AMAZING, great concept idea. Would you be able to perhaps source a large sheet of tinted plexi for the screen bezel?

And to take it to the next level you could paint it with that plati-coat paint to give it the classic 90's texture

We use a local glass merchant. we make a template from paper...... the machine scans it, then CNCs (yes CNC) the glass sheet. I was amazed!

But i'm getting ahead of myself now...... i don't want to spoil everything for you just yet  ;)

Very nice idea for making that corner! But how will you merge that franken-corner with the bottom and right-side panels?

If it is going to have functional giant buttons, I can't imagine trying to do a diagonal jump.

OH GOD THIS IS AWESOME!

Please, please put a real gameboy in it! Then do the VGA mod to the gameboy so you can port it to the bigger screen. Then make working giant games that you can put in the top. OH GOD PLEASE!!!

You can take apart the old games PCBs and make a giant case for it and a giant PCB connector!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I second this!  or as a backup plan It really wouldn't be that hard to use a Super Gameboy in an SNES if you can't get a hacked gameboy to work properly.

So do you measure a gameboy?  Have you dismantled it?  Or are you using measurements found online?

The mob has spoken at this point. I think you're almost morally obligated to appease this idea or get out of town as fast as you can.

(i just want to see a giant scale removable Tetris cartridge, with artwork, that has a small hidden slot for plugging in any actual size cartridge.) You get that nailed down and this build is headed for Gizmodo quality publicity. Tech/Geek blogs everywhere would eat this up with your level of precision.

I mean, just look how simple this thing is inside. I doubt it would be hard to hack a couple old ones found in a game trader, or off ebay.

I remember owning a first run gameboy when i was little. it was so old it didn't even have security screws holding it together. That came in handy when the black version came out. I grabbed a #2 phillips and gutted it to paint the enclosure.  I know that thing is around my place here somewhere. I wish i'd have kept it in the same place as my gameboy colour.

I second the idea of going with a SNES + Super GameBoy and giant game cartridges.

Extra bonus points if you make giant game cartridges with labels and everything for these four classic games:
  • Tetris
  • Super Mario Land
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
  • Metroid II: Return of Samus

You might want to have those carts made by CNC to have a giant "Nintendo" engraved at the top like the real carts.

Also, I am wondering how you made the concave areas around the gamepad and buttons.  :dizzy:

P.S.: are you going to round up the edges of the select and start buttons slots? Will you add a 1/4" stereo audio jack on the bottom panel once you're at that point in the build?

This ones already way better then that one.  Like come on? Door handles?

I know it's your call no mater what way you decide to go with it, but my vote is you sacrifice a couple gameboys before you go the super gameboy copout way.

Oh yeah, and milling the Nintendo into the carts would be bad ass.
