I think I'm in the minority, but I'd keep the surrounds and ditch the artwork completely. I'm more of a fan of classic, simplistic control panels. I think the artwork belongs on the marquee, bezel, and sides. |

It just breaks up the images IMHO. :dunno Still, transparent seems a bit better to me. --- End quote --- --- Quote from: blashyrk on August 27, 2013, 11:45:34 am ---Really nice artwork, Go for the second option, or maybe a little less opacity :) --- End quote --- --- Quote from: shponglefan on August 27, 2013, 11:49:46 am ---I prefer the translucent version since it does a better job of tying the underlying art into the button placement. (As a side rant, one of the biggest mistakes people make in CP/art design is not taking into account tying buttons to the underlying artwork. If the whole thing is treated as a unified piece of visual art, the end result is much more aesthetically pleasing.) --- End quote --- --- Quote from: BadMouth on August 27, 2013, 09:59:15 am ---I think the translucent doesn't look as good. :lol The slightly translucent edges look good. Definitely ditch the whole thing around the joystick. I scanned the whole thing for places where the button placement and artwork clashed, but there are one. I like it! --- End quote --- Thanks fellas. I think I will keep the translucent sides and just a hint of translucent center surrounds to help tie the art together. It is just for this build but I assume I will have to tweak it for any other builds as well. --- Quote from: monkeychunkuk on August 27, 2013, 10:32:16 am ---Ohhh that's control panel is awesomeness care to share your PSD file with me ??? --- End quote --- - Straight Layout - - Curved Layout - The idea behind my PSD file is that I now have a "Master Template" that I can use on any of my Full Size Control panels. Both Straight and Curved layout are available. Now that I have the surrounds and drilling locations I can just modify it slightly with a different art layer and\or button surround colors. I went with this tan-ish color to match the bricks and stuff in the back as it consumes most of the pictures color. --- Quote from: yotsuya on August 27, 2013, 12:40:47 pm ---I think I'm in the minority, but I'd keep the surrounds and ditch the artwork completely. Sounds like more work though ;D Maybe I will try my hand at some more custom work, need to hone my photoshop skills first though and learn some new techniques. |

Cory- I like looking though these for inspiration: http://www.arcadeartlibrary.com/arcade_art/categories.php?cat_id=6&sessionid=4e54449091d15f8e1c67a4c1c13386c0 I think it's important to note that even the most elaborate panels artwise still took button placement into account, so you didn't have stuff obscured or cut out. |
