Well, that design change to accommodate the exact ratio of the marquee is quite nice indeed.   :applaud:  Nice job, as always! Like Holmes would say: "everything is in the details"...    Looking good!

Thanks! I don't think I would have been happy with the smaller marquee, and I wouldn't have expected anyone else to buy them if they were like that.

Found a 19" 4:3 locally, should pick it up tomorrow night.  Only bummer:  as I said earlier, I wanna make use of parts and things I already have to keep the cost down.  I just noticed the 2 25 feet rolls of black T-molding I have are 3/4"...  Rats, hope I can find 5/8" locally...

First, check this thread. Another option, if you can't buy a cutter, would be to use a sharp razor blade or even a very sharp chisel, running along the control panel to get a smooth cut. I, myself, also have 3/4" t-molding on order (mainly because there seem to be more selection) and am planning on doing this to trim it all out. Don't forget, if you are planning on using plexi to cover your control panel, you can use your 3/4" to give a flush edge to the panel with the plexi on it.

No problem! Mine also has them in stock, but only 3 left! I see a trip in my immediate future.

Looking forward for a price on that Pinball kit.  It's great to have a Canadian option.

Well, I'm not happy just fixing the whole 'shipping costs and duty' problem, so let's do this: I've found comparable full kits run about $399 for the cabinet and backbox... ...so let's chop that price down to size.*

As our "Opening Special" for a limited time, I'm offering packages at $250, plus applicable shipping, for the full Williams Widebody-style kit, for BYOAC Members. Pickup available if you're in the GTA area.

How's that?

  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
I have a couple questions:

- If I use the slot to hold plexi or glass, does it essentially make it impossible to replace in the future (it appears it would be captured between the sides when the cab is glued together)?

- I probably missed this on an earlier post, so I apologize if you've answered this already - what size/aspect monitor is ideally suited for this cabinet? 17" 5:4? 19" 5:4? 20" 4:3?

- Does shipping scale down at all if more than one kit is ordered at the same time?

I'm looking forward to these being order-able.  Having an option for these in Canada is fantastic, not just because your designs look great, but because shipping is so reasonable (and no "brokerage fees" or other nonsense to deal with).

I've designed the bartops with the routing on the sides. The top and bottom won't be slotted. You'll be able to 'press' or 'pull' them out of the side slots with ease. I designed them this way, because if they were slotted along the horizontal plane, the plexi could be too stiff, and crack if you attempted removal.

I probably missed this on an earlier post, so I apologize if you've answered this already - what size/aspect monitor is ideally suited for this cabinet? 17" 5:4? 19" 5:4? 20" 4:3?

I designed them to work with a 19" 4:3 LCD I have here, so a widescreen 19" or standard 17" should also fit well. With either, I still recommend bezel art or painting the plexi.

Does shipping scale down at all if more than one kit is ordered at the same time?

I would assume it would. I'm not 'upselling' on the shipping (i.e. not making money on the charges) and I believe Canada Post should cut a break on the shipping, as long as the packages don't go over their single-package maximum of 67lbs.

I'm looking forward to these being order-able.  Having an option for these in Canada is fantastic, not just because your designs look great, but because shipping is so reasonable (and no "brokerage fees" or other nonsense to deal with).

Thanks! I'm working to bring these to you soon! (At the very least, my post responses are prompt!)

Check with Fedex for shipping as well.  I used to ship stuff all over Canada and US although they were smaller packages, but Fedex had the best prices and most reliable service, not to mention you can easily print the way bills online and they will give you free clear envelops to include the waybill on the package (and you just call them to schedule pickup - if you do it frequently and you get a good pickup guy, you can just call him direct and skip the 800 number)

Not that you're shipping to the US, but they also would wave brokerage fees going to the US if the order was under $200 (although this may be different for other types of products - we were shipping granola bars).

I did receive the same offer from Saint (PHRASING!) and I do hope to provide some pics SOON! (I'm just waiting for a response from my CNC shop as to if I can come pay my bill and deliver the wood. If all goes well, I'll be doing both this afternoon!)

DAMN.

I just received an e-mail from my CNC shop, asking if I can hold onto my projects until the middle of next week. I'd just asked if I was able to have my stock of 4'x8's shipped over, and they're re-organizing the shop to better manage the increasing CNC orders, dealing with a dead forklift battery, and completing a "larger than expected" run from another customer.

It can't be helped, and I certainly can't complain. I've been sending them new files and updates for weeks now, and they've been more than helpful with changes and providing tips to make the whole process easier.

(Hmm. I wonder if I can sneak a mini-pin in there, under the wire... Anyone interested in that?)

Well. It would seem the answer to this question is definitely yes.

This Mini-Pin is made to support up to a 27" LCD playfield and a 24" backglass. I've made a 'blank' backglass option, as well as a 'cut' option, so that someone could modify their output to show a simulated DMD and speakers, although depending upon the choice of backglass monitors, they could be in the way of the display of either. (i.e. the monitor may be too low)

I wonder what else I can design to get into this weeks' order?

Damn, I love Solidworks. This one is a full-on Midway clone, shy of the wooden control panel components, which could be replaced with NOS components or even 'factory correct' reproductions. In a few, I'm making some modifications to make this a full four-player capable cabinet.

You thinking like a "Pac-Man Battle Royale meets classic cocktail" design? THAT would be very interesting to see.

You know the Battle Royale game will be released in steam in a few months, right?  ;D

That's what I was thinking. The stand up cocktail version of the original battle royale could be a bit much unless someone was looking for a direct clone. This gives the classic look. Wasn't sure if you were going this route or a "double sided" cocktail, think Nintendo red tent but with two wide screen LCDs...

We are so giving you too many ideas at once  ;)

LOVE the Red Tent. I'd be afraid I wouldn't be able to do them justice, however. I don't have any capabilities - presently - to work with metal. I'm sure it would take little to find a metal shop in the area, mind you, so you never know. ;)

I don't think designing one out of wood would take away from the look of the original. Since it's not a "clone", liberties could be taken with the design.
- Looking at that pic I see either a 16:9 or 16:10 on each side, removing that artwork square and coin mech (coin mech could be relocated under the CP or on sides if wanted).
- The CP area extends out and inch or so towards the players, giving space for two six button layouts per side.
- Remove the 4 player start buttons on the far side to space things out better.
- The individual player start buttons can be relocated in front of each player, either in the vertical plane on front of the CP, or above the CP but under the screens.

The only major hurdle with the design I see are the legs. If something could be tracked down via a furniture parts store or ikea, that would be the best route.

Now as far as internals, that depends on if the builder wants straight cloned displays (in that case, all you need is the 2nd LCD and a "Y" VGA adapter. Could even use just one SLG still) or individual setups linked over network possibly.

I need to get into something like solid-works to start fleshing out my ideas. Sketch-up is "ok", but I hear a lot of CNC guys have trouble with the files.

Oh, I'm sure it's possible, but it would be more of a bastardized bartop/red tent hybrid than anything... ...unless you went to a lot of after-build trouble to mitre the edges for joining at appropriate angles, which is of course, possible. If you didn't, you could always just 'clone' the sides of a popular bartop, and then, make it a 'back-to-back' unit.

In fact, the whole idea sounds pretty damn smart.

- Looking at that pic I see either a 16:9 or 16:10 on each side, removing that artwork square and coin mech (coin mech could be relocated under the CP or on sides if wanted).

You're right. It's actually a very clean design, and would be fairly simple to modify into a custom design.

The only major hurdle with the design I see are the legs. If something could be tracked down via a furniture parts store or ikea, that would be the best route.

If you want to be original, and go with a chome and metal look, then yeah. It would also be pretty easy to replicate using wood.

Now as far as internals, that depends on if the builder wants straight cloned displays (in that case, all you need is the 2nd LCD and a "Y" VGA adapter. Could even use just one SLG still) or individual setups linked over network possibly.

Now, you're thinking! More than I have, actually. I've been so busy with the design aspect, I've totally glossed over the hardware. It's got some impressive functionality, to say the least.

I need to get into something like solid-works to start fleshing out my ideas. Sketch-up is "ok", but I hear a lot of CNC guys have trouble with the files. (yes, coffee has been extra strong this morning  ;D )

You do. You really do. I'm a Sketchup convert. Solidworks has a lot of differences, and I liken the learning curve to that with Classic Doom to Doom 3. Both had great, cutting-edge functionality and performance, and specific controls that worked for their own personal iterations.

But yeah, Solidworks is "the" go-to program, in my opinion.
