ok you seriously need to review something a little more...... less well known. Why not WindJammers or something like that?
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.

I'll be honest - I was busy working all week, and didn't get the opportunity to review a more "unique" games. When it came down to producing this week's article, I had to go with a game I knew very well to get it out on time. Truth be told, it takes me several hours of work to produce each article, as I do try to research the games and provide a unique viewpoint on each.

If Windjammers is a request, I'll definitely do my best to get to that soon!

Wait, when did you become a blogger, Rick? Aren't you still cutting bartops?

I am! In fact, I've completed two for sale - my first two-player Titan, and a one player Contender - just this last week. I've actually been really busy working on growing the company, and am happy to report that it's going really, really well. (Certainly not, "I can quit looking for a job" well, but definitely, "I'm helping to keep my house" well.)

;)

As for the blogging, yes, I realize that without more topical updates regarding the company, it does seem to be that I'm only a writer. What I am trying to do is to promote the company, and keep people coming back to the website for a reason. I've built more than my fair share of websites in the past for others, and it's disappointing when I go back to review them - sometimes over a year later - and find out that they haven't even made a single update, or topical post.

In fact, I'm planning even more of a media presence very soon, including some other... ...more 'unique' choices. They may fizzle - in fact, I think it'll take a bit of time before they catch on at all - but they're something I've been working hard on, and something that I hope will help energize the arcade industry in the long run.

love that game!  Almost nobody even knows it exists :/   Did you play all the way through? It kinda gets a little "unfun hard" near the end, I think the woman is the easiest person to beat the game with.

I wasn't able to beat the game myself, no. I did love the music and sound, and I was really surprised at how I had never heard of this game before. (It's truly a hidden gem - I couldn't find much information on the cabinet, other than it was a "Taito F3 cartridge", so I don't know if it ever came in it's own cabinet, or if it was an 'upgrade' cart.)

Scramble was an awesome game - even the handheld version was cool (you could turn the sound off, I think, so you could play it after being sent to bed).  Simple concept and annoyingly hard at the end, and I still don't understand how shooting a tank of fuel puts gas in the spaceship.

Great review, Rick!

I'm going to build a full-size, proper workshop in my backyard to support the CNC, plus finishing, assembly and painting services. I want to do it right, with a proper concrete floor, wide entrance to support storing proper wood stock, environmental control, a surplus of clean power, and most of all, a proper vacuum system to accommodate dust control. I want it to be a safe, clean space that is dedicated to the work, and that no longer encroaches on the "family space" we share.

(Right now - I mean "right now", I'm sitting in the living room with earplugs in, waiting for a cut to complete, while my Wife and Son are upstairs. It's certainly not the ideal situation, but it's what I have right now.)

So business is good?

Business is good! Thanks for asking!

I also determined yesterday that a change I had made to my CNC programs back a couple of months ago was detrimental to my progress... I'd implemented a 'lead in' which was supposed to gradually cut into the wood, and help to alleviate deeper cuts on single lines, like the circles I used for button and joystick holes. What I didn't know was that it had been applied to ALL lines - which means the router was going back and forth and back and forth and back and forth along edges, wasting a lot of time and burning bits out too quickly.

When I finally figured this out, I recalculated one of my larger projects - the full-size cabinet, which takes four sheets to complete. The original configuration took 5 hours 22 minutes to complete, and once I fixed the programming, it now completes in 2 hours and 10 minutes! So frustrating.

so you're one step closer to making plywood replica kits for the Nintendo upright?

Holy crap!

Yeah. I was totally pissed at that gaffe. Ah well. Live and learn.

so you're one step closer to making plywood replica kits for the Nintendo upright?

I am - with a small caveat. I'm working on a different 'major project' right now, and that's an upright CNC machine to replace the beast in my dining room.

When it's complete, it will still cut 4x8 sheets, have a footprint of 10' x 3', and be surrounded by a case that will help with dust and sound... ...much, much nicer to the whole 'in the house' dynamic.

I've also asked a bunch of questions about upgrading to an 80W laser - particularly how it handles mortises and depth of cut. It may be a big 'no go', but I'm doing my investigation first before deciding which direction to take. (I'm reallllly hoping laser will work for my application - because there's no pushback from a cutting bit, I should be able to push the machine from the 120IPM I'm getting now to up to 600IPM with the laser on rapids... ...but we'll see.)

:D

So I'm eyeballing that 27" one... couple of questions... is that vertically or horizontal? Also, for the CP, I'm kinda thinking I want something like my very first cabinet where I had the joystick on the right, and buttons on the left, except this time I was thinking of going with a track ball and possibly even a spinner. I guess I'm worried a bit about cramming all that onto a CP. I'm not really looking for a 2 player config, I have that already with my son's cocktail build. This one is gonna be my personal baby for my office. Do you happen to have any plan designs I could look at for the type of CP I am thinking about? I'm thinking I might, just might, wanna add a gun as well so I can play Hogan's Alley. I already know for my personal setup, I'm going CONCAVE RGB all the way with a PACLED64.

She's actually pushing for the new design. While I've recently found out that laser won't be feasible, the new design will be a much smaller footprint, quieter, and with a lot more dust control.

Cabinet pr0n! Here's a pic of a 99% complete full-size Titan XL kit (the best priced full-size on the 'net!) from Gameroom Designs, that I just sold to a customer a few weeks ago...

Unfortunately, he broke the bezel during installation, so a replacement is going out tomorrow via courier. I'll post more pics once he's received it, and it's installed and complete!

Hey Rick,

I stumbled upon this thread as well as visited your website and I must say that this is an awesome idea! Growing up with arcades and recently visiting FunSpot in New Hampshire, my love for arcades has been rekindled. I'm dabbling with the idea of building a full size cabinet to install a PC to mame. If the end product can look like the picture above, this is going to be awesome!

Growing up with arcades and recently visiting FunSpot in New Hampshire, my love for arcades has been rekindled. I'm dabbling with the idea of building a full size cabinet to install a PC to mame. If the end product can look like the picture above, this is going to be awesome!

Thanks, Alienyde! I'm very proud to bring arcade creations to the public, and I'm happy to say we're constantly busy bringing new products to the public! I hope you consider Gameroom Designs when you're ready to build your cabinet!

My customer just completed his cabinet bezel, and has provided a couple of updated pics...

I'm really happy with how this cabinet turned out, and love when my customers share their awesome work!

Yet another Street Fighter full-sized cabinet:

I love these machines, the more I build them. Maybe the next one will have a different theme. (Not that I'm complaining - they look AMAZING.)

:D

  • I want to build my own arcade controls!

Gameroom Designs Canada is proud to manufacture well-priced, high-quality Bartop Arcade Cabinets, Cocktail Arcade Cabinets, Pinball Cabinets, and other designs for the Canadian Market. Every cabinet product is designed using cutting-edge 3D modelling tools and created from the best materials, using professional CNC machinery to provide a professional finish. With an ever-expanding inventory of products, we work with the top arcade suppliers to provide our customers with everything needed to create bring their projects to life. Check out our website at TheArcadeshop.com for your complete source of joysticks, buttons, power supplies, arcade PCB's, encoders and much, much more!

Each of our bartop arcade cabinet products offer classic, retro-inspired designs that are inspired by some of the most famous arcade games in history.

Our premium products are produced from professional grade 5/8" medium density fiberboard (MDF) for the best stability, functionality and the most flexibility in finish options.

An industry first, Gameroom Designs Canada is the first manufacturer to include 1/4" slots integrated into the sides to support simple installation of clear acrylic for both the marquee and bezel at no extra cost. T-molding slot cutting for the sides, top, marquee and control panel is also included at no additional cost.

Customize every product to your personal requirements with the most flexible customization options in the industry! Select from a blank control panel, or choose one of our professional templates - six button straight "fighter-style" layout, or six button curved ergonomic layout, or others - and we'll make sure it meets your requirements.

We put a lot of thought into each and every bartop, and the quality of workmanship extends into the interior of the arcade cabinet as well. There is ample space in the cabinet to accommodate a PC or arcade power supply, up to a full ATX motherboard, encoder board (if used) and wiring. Each of our standard designs support up to a 19" 4:3 or 16:9 monitor, and comes complete with a monitor mounting kit, which is slotted to accommodate standard mounting screws, permitting monitors to be installed in either a horizontal or vertical alignment! Our larger cabinets are built to support even larger monitors, with 25" and 27" internal widths available, and these cabinets are perfect for two-player solutions.

Once you have your cabinet selected, we have a number of great add-ons that are included at no extra cost, that will help to finish your project. Our Acrylic Kit offers you CNC-cut clear acrylic for your marquee (2 pieces), bezel and control panel, and fit perfectly for your cabinet. Our Door Access Kit, including properly selected hinges and a barrel lock with two keys also comes as a standard option.

Cocktail Arcade Cabinets are a nostalgic solution that offer a seated option for playing the classics, with the added bonus of being able to use their table-top as a place to hold your drink. We have two models for all of your gaming needs. Our Paragon offers standard two-player entertainment, allowing for head-to-head play, and our widescreen Paragon XL also permits horizontal, side-by-side play.

Our Mystic XL Pinball Cabinet is a widebody pinball configuration that supports up to a 46" flat-screen monitor for the playfield (a 42" flat-screen should fit without any modification to the playfield case, but 46" flat-screens will likely require the use of power tools to modify the case slightly), 29" flat-screen monitor for the backglass, and up to a 24" flat-screen monitor for DMD. (There is a hole between the backbox and the main body, so horizontal or vertical monitor mounting can be accommodated.)

Hey, sorry for the delay in replying to this - I thought I was all caught up with posts.

Our kits are built to order, and can be cut and shipped within 5-10 business days. Every kit comes with the parts required to assemble, plus hinge kit and a barrel lock and key set. Shipping to your location in the U.S. would be ~$75 Canadian. (...and ALL of our pricing is in Canadian.)
