Oh, i forgot. I have a lighted credit button under the Control Panel. Instead of paint I used vinyl Laminate only on the control panel box. I also added black t molding to the Control panel box sides and ill add it to the Control panel once i apply the overlay. I have one orange and one purple button. Im using black one player & two player start buttons. Thanks..

Really? I'm only a couple hours from TN, whereabouts can one pick those up? Next time the family wants to go do Dollywood I'll have to make some space in the truck.

Edit: I need to grab me a bottle of that Jack Daniels Frank Sinatra select, too. Now I'm thirsty  :lol

I built a shelf to put the pc on. I didnt want it sitting on the bottom of the barrel and the control panel/monitor box might not of held it. i just trhew it together.

For the Control Panel I used the artwork as a template. I then drilled holes for the buttons and joystick. lastly i routered the edegs for Black T_molding to go on later.

For the box i used the monitor to determine my size. If youll notice the screen width is the same width as the control panels.

Here r my speakers. just $20 dollar USB powered ones. I had to find real small ones as I didnt have more than 2 inchs of space between the control panel and the monitor and I didnt want to put them on the side of the barrel. Would just throw the whole thing off. ;D

I forgot to take a pic of cutting a hole in the front of the box for the credit button.  :( Next was the vinyl laminate and T-Molding.

here are some other parts. I used an X-Arcade board for the controls as it plugs right into a USB port and is easy to config with MAME. I added a fan to keep everything cool. I put a fuse Power box to plug in the power cord. For volume control a wired a Dual Ganged audio tapper. Im using an electronic control relay running of 12 volts on the PC power supply that will turn my monitor on when i power up the PC.

So here it is almost done. just need my artwork printed to finish the control panel. I also need to figure out a way to secure my control panels to the box. I was thinking on using magnets since i need to remove them first if i ever need to take the box out. there's also a cool pic of the back showing the Volume Control, Fan, etc. :applaud:

I made up an instruction card even though Mala has instructions on the screen I needed something to show how to exit a game and get back to Mala. It doesnt work though. The wife & kids still ask me how to work the thing. LOL..   :P Thanks for looking. Im sorry to post so much at once. Ill do my best to explain anything in more detail and to answer any questions. Ill post more as i complete the build..

nice instruction card, I like it!!

Are you going to shim the cuts in the barrel so they mate up with the CP properly? I had to do that with mine..... it sucked.

Im actualy just going to leave it like it is because my control panel box slides out from the 2 player side. If I Added slats on that side i couldnt get the panel out. I could add them on the one player side though.

I was thinking about attaching the slats to the cox on the 2 player side and attache them to the barrel on the one player side. that way i could still slide it out and have slats.

Them main thing i dont like would be having slats without a band on it.  ;)

Very cool, it looks like the Barrel of Kong is turning into a sub-type of MAME cab.  I can see why - much more wife-friendly than traditional cabs. I live in Lexington KY so bourbon barrels are readily available...

The way I made arcade machines wife friendly was to give her $20 in quarters and made her play arcade games until she was hooked.

Had a thought last night. I dont like the size of the HAPP Dust Washers around the joysticks. they just are to big and cover more of the art work than i like. So i have decided to get custom cut and printed ones. Here is my design. These will only cost $12 including shipping. Im using the Sanwa JLF joystick size (with shaft cover). These are smaller which will show more art work and will fit closer to the joystick shaft as the diameter of the washer hole is smaller than the HAPP ones im using now.

...so I previously posted earlier in the thread about how I thought this was a cool concept.

Later on that evening, I went home and showed my wife, and amazingly she not only agreed, but she is now on the hunt for a barrel and is on a mission to get me to build this :o

Thanks to both griffindodd/Maximus & spaceclown for the inspiration  :applaud:

I dont know the policy on posting links.

Sounds like you haven't read the rules yet.    ;D

Nothing wrong with posting links as long as you don't run afoul of rule 5 by posting links to X-in-1 boards, ROMz sites, etc.

Quote
5. Nothing illegal! Do I even need to explain this one? Need a ROM to repair an arcade board you own? Fine to talk about. Need a ROM to complete your MAME collection? Don't bother to post here. If someone posts such a request, please don't answer it -- no direct answers, no hints, no private messages.

It's always good to hear reviews of vendors in addition to the usual sources.

Yeah its a MALA theme. Here are some pics of the PC starting up and MALA running.
1st is the PC logo. which used to be the windows logo. I replaced with my own. That white ball is the flash on my camrea and not part of the logo. Just imagine its not there. LOL  :laugh2:

2nd is the windows desktop. Its only up for a second before MALA but looks cool better than the standard theme.

3rd is the Front End MALA. as you can see when you scroll through the games it changes the picture and shows a picture of the actual game Marquee with an in game snap I took. It gives a description of the game and even a counter of how many times a game has been played.

last is a load screen right before the game starts. Just adds to the excitement and gives time to take a sip of beer or wine before you start..  :P

I did get my Monitor Bezel Art Work too. Its was too big. Another problem I've run into is the LCD monitor screen is to big. Not a big deal but the monitor only allows you to adjust the Horizontal size and not the Vertical size. The video card only allows the picture to be moved and not resized as well. I've even tried NEC's software for the monitor and several third party software but none will allow you to adjust size.  So Im trying to find another monitor. Its hard to find one that has a 170 degree viewing angle and allows you to adjust the horizontal and vertical picture size that doesnt cost a fortune. Last resort ill through a CRT in there.

I haven’t posted in a while, thought id give a quick update on this project. I redesigned the monitor bezel artwork to fit my monitor (see pic). This was easier and cheaper than replacing the monitor. I also ordered a glass table top a 27 inch round, 1/3 inch thick with pencil edge. Ill post pictures of the bezel and the glass top when I get them. :)

Neat project.  Those Jack Daniel's barrels used to be shipped down to St. Croix and used to age Cruzan Rum.  Now I'm convinced Cruzan is being distilled  in rusty oil drums stolen from the shuttered oil refinery.   :-\

Actually, I too have been on the lookout for a good deal on a barrel so I can make one of these. Very cool and unique idea... that and I love DK.

I finally got around to finishing this thing. I got my bezel artwork printed. Which looks great!.. I used a thin piece of MDF to put it on. I went down to a local print shop and had them print out a copy of the bezel on plain paper to use as a template for cutting the MDF. I topped the whole thing off with a round 3/8 inch annealed glass, 27 inches wide.

What size monitor did you use? I didn't see it in the posting unless I missed it.
