Scratch Build: Fix It Felix
« on: August 09, 2013, 04:45:42 pm »
Hello everyone, this is my first project post. I've been around for a little while but haven't participated much, yet. Last summer I restored an old 1970s motorcycle and my dad and I were looking for something new to do together this summer. When I found Sjaak's FFjr thread I was hooked. My dad would've preferred a space invaders cab but since I'm footing the bill I won. Always loved Wreck-It Ralph and the original Nintendo cabinet shape so this seemed a good fit. Been acquiring parts for a while now and last night we were finally ready to make some cuts!

Let me apologize for quality of photos/video. All I've got is an iPhone.

We followed Jakobud plans to make a template. (took us much longer than I'd have thought to do)

Cut out sides with a jigsaw. Wood is mdf.

Bought the artwork from a KLOV member who bought it from Ridicrick but then changed his mind. Must say, seems pretty high quality.

Coin door from ebay. Arcade buttons, ipac2, and joystick from Ultimarc. I've already got the computer setup and working running a skinned version of Win7 that boots directly into Maximus Aracade.

I was pretty happy after making a little startup animation for the windows load screen of Ralph pounding some Nicelanders! I got the idea from another thread: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=113896.0

I had that going months ago in the dead of winter when there was nothing else to do.

This is my first go at anything wood related so we know we'll be making mistakes. But it's been fun so far. We can only work once a week so updates may be slow but it will get done!

You poor soul.  :D

The pictures are not working, can you stick them on flickr?

I somehow managed to half upload all my photos, link them, then cancel the upload. ??? Anyway, should be fixed now. Thanks!

Years later, and this is done! I posted regular updates on my blog but wanted to put a final note here too because I couldn't have done it without the fine help of everyone at BYOAC.

See the final post on my blog: http://sergiostuff.com/2018/07/08/fix-felix-july-2018-update/

As a finishing touch, I also created a custom serial badge, thanks in large part to CoryBee's inspiration and tips. The files and templates I created are available here: http://sergiostuff.com/2018/07/22/custom-arcade-serial-plate/

Lastly, I'll post a couple links to videos I took of the cabinet complete.

Thanks everyone. It sat un-worked on for a couple years when I moved for a new job. It was a lot of fun coming back over a long weekend and finishing it up. Felt great.

Looks great meyer!  Makes me want to place the coin mechs in mine and not use the button mod I made.  Did you consider painting the inside of the speaker grill black?

The speaker grill is not painted on an original DK (but not a bad idea!).

Also, get a coin door with proper mechs!  You won't regret it.

You are going to make my Christmas card list if you keep this up.

LOL.  There are a few things that all upright cabinets should have and a coin door is definitely one of them.  People complain that they can be pricey but if you can afford to scratch build a cab you can afford the coin door.

jdbailey1206: I never thought of that, it's probably a good idea. Do people just use a small brush to paint the inside grill?

And I agree with everyone regarding mechs. I got a used nintendo coin door but it was easy enough to strip, clean up, and repaint. And the coin roll-down mechs I used are available for $20 each at TwistedQuarter (there are more accurate reproduction options available for a higher price too). But the coin door and mechs really gives it an authentic feel.
