Mario Kart Arcade GP series and F-Zero AX
« on: July 24, 2013, 03:46:32 pm »
So..  what is the status of playing these at home on a softmodded Wii? It's a little hard to find any good details online.

Which Mario Karts work (1? 2?) What features work or don't work on these and F-Zero AX?

I have a softmodded Wii with the Homebrew Channel. I'm not asking where to find the roms/ ISOs, just what do I need to do once I do find them? With F-Zero, do you have to use the GameCube disc for this to work or is there an arcade rom/ ISO that works better?

Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 works very well on Dolphin.  The first game is almost the same thing but it's missing a few things.  I haven't checked in a while to see if F-Zero was working.

UPDATE: PC/Cab info
===================================================================================================

Well that was more painless than I thought. For any Cab/PC owner, all you need to do is download the triforce version of Dolphin (im using Dolphin Triforce 3.0-694 x64), the mario gp 2 game and then edit the game ini to play it.

BTW: As far as I know, f-zero ax (triforce version) is not playable on triforce dolphin but, you can unlock the whole AX game using an F-zero GX (gamecube iso) and an action replay cheat code in the regular version of Dolphin

to edit the mario gp2 ini
1. goto \Dolphin Triforce 3.0-694 x64\User\GameConfig
2. open the file that belongs to your gameid (the name of your downloaded game)
3. edit and replace the ini with

Well wouldn't they play better on GameCube/Wii rather than a PC, since the Triforce is supposedly based on that?

I actually have a wii in my cab but, i prob wont go through the trouble of installing/trying quadforce. The only game im interested in is mariokart gp and it plays fine on the pc.

This is on wii so, I would say yes, it plays better since it actually play f-zero ax

F-zero AX +(QUADFORCE v2.0)

Gotta try this again.  I messed with it back when news first broke that it was running, but I couldn't get it going.
Hopefully newer versions don't require so much finagling.

I think I may get a spare Wii just for this! I can also play the Cruis'n (AKA Raw Thrills Fast & the Furious) Wii game and maybe more on this.

I'm pretty sure the Logitech G27 wheel does *NOT* work with the Nintendo Wii (I have one, I can test if I get a free moment).

So..  even if you do get this running on a Wii, how are you going to control it?  WiiMote?  Ya..  no thanks.

That's why Dolphin (and its Triforce arcade brand) was so attractive...   it doesn't care what controller you use.  :)

Actually, it seems Quadforce only works with GameCube controllers, so I guess that means a GameCube wheel would work for it.

I play Mario Kart GP on Dolphin Tri force on the PC.  There is still some problems on F-Zero, only one person has the code for it for the card reader problem on Tri force.  They need some people to work on it, to get it going right.

BUT this here is very cool.  You can unlock F-Zero AX tri force on the Gamecube, it is hidden

I have tried to link Mario Kart GP on Dolphin Tri force on two PC's.  It was a no go, it did not have us in the same race.
Now, Sega Model2 Daytona that works like a champ in Link mode.  That also works with tungle(online) in link mode, smooth like butter.  I race with my buddy states away. ;D ;D

Got this running the last couple of days, the latest version of Quadforce is 4.1 which adds USB device support as well as SD.

The MKGP2 game is very laggy through the loading/select screens on the wii. Originally I thought it was related to SD loading (first try with QF4.0) but this was not the case. NB: Installing quadforce also breaks the standard Gamecube compatibility of your wii.

I will probably end up running this on dolphin triforce instead, advantage being you can also use any PC wheel with it.

Sorry OP, I was not trying a hijack.

Ok, I assume you already know how to set up  Sega model2.
Tungle will work with all model2 link games, not just Daytona.  It also works with Supermodel3, Daytona2  ;D
Just remember to in Tungle, the person hosting the game in Daytona.  That is the Master, the other players have to be set on Slave & have a different car/machine ID#s. Also that they are set to the same region for Model2 for link mode.

For Tungle:
Open/forward port  11155 for Tungle.
After you have installed Tungle, I go into the MISC.  in network explorer.  Then I go into Game emulators. To make my room in there.
It will give you a virtual IP # in the bottom left screen.  The person who you are going to race with will need this virtual IP # since you will be hosting the game.
The other person will need to go into your room you made.  Once you are both in there, you launch Daytona.
Now, thou I go and set up Daytona 1st, the other player should also.  Master/slave, regions, car/machine ID#.  IF those are NOT set right it will not work.  If setting up model2 in tungle, after setup.  Relanch Model2 Daytona.

Now a very import step for Model2:
In your Model2 folder, you have a M2network cfg file.
Open to edit the: NEXTIP=  this will be the vip# of the peson hosting the game. The vip#, the one Tungle gives you because you created a vpn.
It took me and my buddy a minute to figure this out on Model2 but we got it going.  Works like a champ.
Nascar 2003 works in tungle too & NFS shift.  No slow downs

You asked how many people can it do.  I have only done it with two but Daytona has 8 links.  So it should do it as long as the people have it set up right, the 8 racers.  That would be like the old days with 8 linked  :applaud: ;D
Cheers & happy racing.  If you need a racer in there let me know, Sega Daytona model2 Rocks.
You can use Mumble to chat on Daytona to you buds, no slow down.

So I hope my write was clear enough.

It got late last night Nuexzz, it was almost 3am.
But here is the proof you wanted from the developer they fixed the network board for Daytona2 & Scud racer. You can play linked in Model3 Daytona2. :o ;D :applaud:  It is in the Supermodel 0.3a only not in Supermodel 0.2a

OK, so let me get this straight. It seems the best way to run Mario Kart GP 2 (and 1?) is on a PC and the best way to run F-Zero AX is on a GameCube or Wii? And for F-Zero, you can run AX using cheat codes via the GX disc or run the actual arcade ISO? I think running the game via GX is not perfect though. I heard it crashes after each race? Maybe running the actual arcade ISO would work better?

F-Zero GX runs decently on Dolphin, but can crash and has severe studder issues occasionally.  (so bad I won't play it).  You can use cheat codes in Dolphin to enable the AX maps I believe - but its *not* the arcade experience from what I understand.  Just the maps.

Mario kart GP 1/2 supposedly runs fine on Dolphin - I just haven't been able to find the arcade ISOs yet.  I know Mario Kart Double Dash (GameCube) and Wii play fine on Dolphin.  Which is cool because I can use my Logitech G27 to play.

As far as the Wii hack to run the Triforce emulator - I'm not sure what's required.   Although I have a Wii in the garage, so it might be worth investigating.  (although I won't be able to use my Logitech G27 ...  so that sucks)

funny enough gp1 is not playable on dolphin triforce but, GGPE02.zip ;) aka gp2 is playable. double dash and mario kart wii also play fine. For mario wii, you have to check the box to make wii controller to sideways in the controller config to play nice with your wheel (took a me a bit to figure it out)

I havent tryed it yet but, they also made a retro/wii channel version mario kart 64 that should work in dolphin as well.

Yea sorry, I just call it Mario Kart GP but GP 1 is not playable yet.  Just GP2 is playable on Tri force.
But yes it is best to play it on pc, Dolphin Tri force build.
I use the Tri force 3.0-694 build.  I can run it at 60FPS & 100% speed on my pc.

If it is build 737 that is Dolphin not the Dolphin Triforce build.  The latest Dolphin Triforce build is 3.0-697.  They are two different things Dolphin is for Wii & GC.  The Triforce is for Triforce games(but will run others).  A Triforce iso will not run on Dolphin, only on the Dolphin Triforce build.
I tried the 697 build, on my system the 694 runs better for me.

Yup, got that much (my normal Dolphin emulator plays GC and Wii games just fine :) )

I've got the 697 build too - I'll try that one tonight.

I must have grabbed one of the other distro builds.  (silly me!)

OK, so I think then I will play Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 on on Dolphin Triforce PC with a Logitech G27 wheel and Mario Kart Arcade GP 1 and F-Zero AX (the real one) on a modded Wii via Quadforce with a Logitech GameCube wheel. I am a completionist. I need to play both Mario Karts.

I got 697 running the game - and during further research - apparently this build breaks the ability to use items in game!  lol

So I'm looking for 694 right now...  lol

Hi!
Ive got Mario Kart GP 2 running fine with Dolphin 3.0-694 and Ive just download and installed the las Triforce version: 4.0-315.
Ive installed this new version Id like to run Mario Kart GP 1 and 2 (to94 vo) but I cant get it to work :(

Both games starts with a "Device checking" screen and kept "stuck" checking for the wheel.
In my old 694 version GP 1  doesnt work and GP 2 works Ok and I dont see this "new" screen 315 version is showing.

Any ideas how to bypass this screen?

Thank you in advance!!!

hmm i didnt know they were still updating this. I use 694 because its the only one the works. Btw you do know that gp2 have everything gp1 had right? its just an expansion, not a different game. every level in gp1 is in gp2. But I am intrigued if f-zero is playable. i will try out when I get to back home and I will update if needed.

Update:i went to the forums and saw this post. You can try that to see if you can get gp2 to boot in 4.0. Once again I will test when im home tonight. Also F-zero , while being worked on, is still listed as broken.

You need this in the ini now (new format)

If you want to play F-ZeroAX, the full arcade game is 100% unlockable in F-ZeroGX. There's a way to unlock it using Action Replay codes. I remember unlocking it a long time ago and yes, it's the full game. Forgot the codes though :(

It just crashes for me on 4.0. which okay because it plays fine on 694. No need to update yet.

I think there is two different codes for AX, one just unlocks the maps (you get them once you beat the game) and another code is for the whole AX game. I tried it yesterday and after the start screen it boots directly into AX. I can tell because a it gives me instructions on how to use the steering wheel in the racing cabinet and it only gives me the option to race or time trials (in GX you get a lot of extra options)

quick update: I check some youtube videos and confirmed that i am correct. one code get you the ax cup added to gx and the code below boot you into ax only and directly.

this is the code i used for ntsc

Update 7/25/14:

I revisited Fzero AX now that i have a setup strong enough to play and I also came across a new AR that unlocks more AX than the original Code I posted. The best part of the new code is that it has a F-zero AX title screen and other stuff like videos showing the AX license.

This is the new AR code for NTSC

I'm not sure if I should cross-post or not.

So I mentioned in the other thread that I was having issues.  Well apparently now is a good time to monkey with dolphin because they are releasing new builds hourly.

With some tweaking I got the AX version to run reasonably well on my system using the latest build.  Apparently they fixed the sound stuttering issues... it was an emulation bug, and I get around 45-50 fps.  That's with some minor graphical enhancements as well.

The only problem now is the game is extremely unstable... I don't know if it's the AR codes or what but I've yet to finish a race without a crash.

its one of your setting. when researching i remember reading the wiki saying if (blank) is checked, it will be unstable.

yup, turn off v-sync to make it stable

https://wiki.dolphin-emu.org/index.php?title=F-Zero_GX#Configuration

Config   Setting   Notes
V-Sync        Off             Crashes inevitable crashes

also turning on "Skip EFB Access from CPU" in enhancements helps too. i dont know what that does but i feel like it made it smoother

It wasn't the vsync, but some other stuff...  I'll post a full settings list tomorrow as it took me a good hour to get things right.

Even more F-Zero GX fun you can have with AR codes...

F Zero GX - Beta All Cup (Mission 6)

F Zero GX - Beta All Cup (Mission 1)

F Zero GX - Beta All Cup (Mission 2)

F Zero GX - Beta All Cup (Mission 4)

F Zero GX - Beta All Cup (Mission 8)

Codes and further links to them are in the video descriptions.

It's also possible to see the real F-Zero AX attract mode from the actual arcade ISO using the Triforce Dolphin build and AR codes - you can tell it's the proper arcade version because the music is slightly different. Unfortunately the game itself isn't playable. Yet...

F Zero AX - Attract mode (Dolphin Triforce 3.0 697)

It's also possible to get as far as selecting a ship and reaching a track with the proper AX iso in the Triforce build, again using AR codes, but once you reach the track none of the controls work.

F Zero - AX (Dolphin Triforce 3.0 697) booting but not playable

Guys just a quick question please. I've been trying all day to get the Arcade AX version of F-Zero working in the Triforce build of Dolphin.

I've only just spotted the comment that "once you reach the track none of the controls work" and this is the problem I was having too so it's a relief to know that it's not just me and it's not down to the fact that I haven't configured the game correctly. It is however really frustrating that all controls work in navigating the menus and starting the game, it's just that you can't control the damn ship!!

Does anyone know if this problem is fixed yet or if indeed anyone is working on it or is it simply a case that the arcade version of F-Zero AX won't ever work due to unemulated hardware controls?

Thanks :)

I believe it's only playable if you load Dolphin build and load F Zero GX and use AR codes to make it into F Zero AX.

correct. there is only 2 ways to play ax at the moment. Using a special bios on a modified wii and cheat unlocked out of the GX game. The dolphin triforce seems abandoned atm.

In other good news, according to the Dolphin emu September progress report, Fzero Gx is now 110% more optimized than before so, it ran sluggish on your pc before, you should give it a try with the latest dolphin builds. i like going to emucr.com for precompiled daily builds of emus

Oooh, good news. Hopefully no more stuttering audio. Really hoping the DEMUL devs manage to do something similar with the Hikaru emulation just to give me that extra little performance boost to get the games from 50fps to 60. Especially now that Star Wars Podracer game's going to be playable.

i hope its soon but, theres has been alot added to demul so imagine it may be a bit longer. I havent posted it here because it hasnt been racing related but in the last few weeks, theyve added a ton of games and they even added a new system in the last few days(only one tetris game is playable but still). One thing i didnt know was that the current demul version has some win ce support for dreamcast which means sega rally 2 is sorta playable. nulldc does not have any win ce support. Hopefully the new version also improves its win ce support

Do either F-Zero AX or Mario Kart GP2 support force feedback? I remember reading that the Dolphin Emulator did but I haven't been able to find out if the hidden version of F-Zero AX supported it or if the Tri-Force version of Dolphin supported it.

Yep, it definitely works in both the regular version of GX and the hidden version of AX. Not sure about Mario Kart GP 2 though in the Tri-force build or indeed if FFB is supported at all in the build itself.

Out of curiosity I fired up a bit of Mario Kart GP 2 for the first time in ages last night. I haven't set it up with my wheel, but the option to get rumble effects working is in the pad configuration settings of the Tri-Force build (which is what you use for FFB - set to 'constant' -in regular Dolphin). The rumble option didn't seem to do anything in-game (using a PS3 pad and DS3 tool), but it does work if you test it in the config settings, which makes me think that MKGP2 most likely doesn't have any FFB support.

what version of the emulator are you using? I have 4.0 something and it just crashes :(

You got the triforce build?

I'm using Dolphin 4.0 in the FFB video above. If you've got the 'dual core' option checked in the game properties, it does make the game more prone to frequent crashes (particularly if you're using video capture software and hacks), but without the option checked the game only runs at about 25 - 30 fps, so it's a bit of a catch-22 situation.

I've kept hold of my oldest build of Dolphin (r7690M), which seems to run F-Zero better in a lot of ways (smoother frame-rate, no audio stuttering, rarely crashes), but which unfortunately doesn't support any of the AX arcade game hacks (although I've got all the AX tracks unlocked in it the old fashioned way - by beating all the cups in Master mode).

The Triforce build I'm using for MKGP2 is 3.0-6.94 and the one for the (non-playable, but possible to see the attract mode) F-Zero AX ISO is 3.0-6.97.

What about link mode? Did anyone get two player GrandPrix mode working accurately on two PCs?

What about two (or more) players? Any way to link PCs and/or Wiis?

To save someone else 2 hours of their life:
This doesn't seem to work on 4.0-315 or 4.0-314.
Definitely works under 4.0-697.

Some steps are missing from thisguide, ensure you enable cheats and change sp1 and port 1 to am-baseboard, otherwise it just crashes dolphin
I used this guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp9obvp2x4A - which also lists the keys to configure.

This is a bit off-topic, but it's on a Mario Kart theme: Have you guys seen the amazing progress that's being made in Wii U emulation at the moment? I decided to get on-board and give it a try and this is how well Mario Kart 8 runs on my i5 presently.

2017 EDIT: The video I originally linked to here was hideously out of date and running quite slowly. I've changed it to a more recent and much better one (the improvements for me are from a combination of new GPU and massive improvements in the emulator itself). Amazing progress in such a short space of time!

It's impressive, but I can't even get gamecube games to run full speed, so I can't see the point atm.

I read about this as well. Very impressive indeed. Though I'm not a wiiU fan, I wouldn't mind trying out that Fast Racing Neo title that they just came out with.

F-Zero AX (the actual arcade ISO), Mario Kart Arcade GP and Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 (and the Virtua Strikers Triforce arcade games) now work 100% perfectly on the Wii and Wii U. And they aren't emulated, since the systems actually contain the GameCube brains, just like the arcade Triforce.

They even support other things, like Wii U Pro Controller (even on Wii), the official Nintendo GameCube to Wii controller adapter (even on Wii), and most USB controllers, most likely PC wheels too.

Mario Kart Arcade GP DX (the third game) is a Windows game, much like most newer games.

I got Mario Kart GP 2 and I also just download and installed the last Triforce version: 4.0-315.
Ive installed this new version Id like to run Mario Kart gp2  but I cant get it to work right

"Device checking" screen and kept "stuck" checking for the wheel I hit the button and it just loops in the service menu.

Any ideas how to bypass this screen? Or what version I can use? Tried looking for the older versions listed in this thread but the links are dead and gone.

Thank you in advance!!!

Off the top of my head, there's an option in the config you've got to set to something called "AM baseboard". Try that and see if it helps.

If they work on the Wii does that mean they'll also work in the normal Dolphin emulator as well?

I don't think so. Those game have been playable on the Wii for quite a long time using the Quadforce mod.

Interesting. Didn't know about this Qualforce mod. I wonder if they could possibly emulate the Qualforce mod itself within Dolphin? Then no doubt it could work.

Check out how well Mario Kart 8 runs on my PC now using CEMU - in the video above it was just about managing 10 -15fps, now it's running at 60 fps, give or take the odd stutter. Part of this down to a new GPU on my part, but a big part of it is to do with the amazing progress in the emulator itself. It really is incredible how quickly this has progressed.
