Barrel of Kong - Aussie Edition!
« on: July 18, 2013, 12:39:10 am »
Inspired by Griff's "A Barrel of Kong" (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,131202.0.html), I'm going to attempt making one for a mate, he saw a photo on the net somewhere and hit me up to make him one!

The plan is to build cocktail cabinet control panels, slightly tweaked to fit in the barrel with a 60-in-1 vertical board running the standard JAMMA interface.

I'll post costing's and where I sourced the parts within Australia if anyone's interested in having a go themselves.

Once again a huge thanks to Griff for his awe-inspiring creation!

Careful there! Griff may have trademarked the whole "Barrel of Kong" idea. Might I suggest a slightly 'different' inspiration?

Nice one Rick, you managed to derail the project thread in the first reply. :lol  Do they have KFC's in Australia?

Dammit! Now I'm going to have Ond come down on me.

;)

Sorry, holdennut. I - am - excited to see what you're going to do! I can say that after Griff's design, even I was considering a barrel-themed Kong cab.

Haha, yeah all good guys!

Have checked with Griff before I posted and he's cool with it, will have my own "Aussie touch" to it anyway...

The barrels have arrived and the buttons board etc have been ordered. Getting stung a bit on price compared to the prices you guys get in the US...

Paid $120 for the barrel and the best price on glass so far came in at $160

Holy cow! I think you can get both of those for under $100 if you take your time and look around here in the US. Ouch.
Good luck - the original cab is an incredible concept. Good luck with your take on it.

A beer keg is a lot easier to get around my way than a wine barrel is. I have thought about putting Tapper in a beer keg...

A beer keg wouldn't be big enough, an asteroid on the other hand is do-able for sure!

Been a bit slack this week but have drawn up the CP side template in PacMan style.

As requested, moar ideas:
- LEGO Tetris cab.

- Bubbles in a sink.

- Frogger (or racing game) in a tire.

- Golden Tee in a golf bag/stand -- connect to big screen TV.

- TMNT in a stack of pizza boxes/delivery bags -- controls covered by the delivery bag flap when not in use.

All this mocking but Le Chuck has pulled off the idea of having an arcade in something other than a cab here with impeccable taste.

Not quite -- that's a lego Pac-Man cab.   >:D

There's no Tetris games on the XX-in-1 boards AFAIK -- you'd have to use a 138-in-1.   ;D

There was an aussie guy that used to make and sell arcade machines in a barrell pretty much exactly like this.  Last one I think he sold on ebay for $810 in 2011. But I'm sure he was making them as far back as 2007.

Got a bit busy on the weekend!

Removed the barrel lid first up to be greeted by the beautiful smell of rotten wine!
Screwed down the barrel hoops either side of the cut lines to ensure things all stayed together nicely after it was cut.
Cut out a basic template to hold everything together and ensure the barrel cuts were correct. Maximus was dead on about how hard it is to judge the vertical cuts, the cuts all feel wrong...
All sitting in place nicely, now the wait for 2 control panels to be cut and folded...

Maximus, I've learnt a lot from your build and measured my cuts so many times it had to be right!

Been playing around with CP layouts and think this will be my final before getting them machined up! The last cocktail I built had them too close together for my big fingers so have spaced it all out a bit more this time.

PDF attached.

Looking perfect thus far.
I see more of these barrel builds coming in the future, being refined each time.

I have absolutely no use for it, but if I come across  a barrel cheap I won't be able to resist building one.

EDIT: Check with your local wineries for barrels.  Once all the flavor has been leeched out of the wood, they aren't of use to them anymore.
My girlfriend will be excited to go wine tasting.  She doesn't need to know why.
