PS3. 12GB vs 500GB. Pros and cons?
« on: July 03, 2013, 05:54:29 am »

Now the PS3 is starting to get sold off, I'm thinking of getting one. Looking at comparable bundles, it seems the 12GB models are about $100 cheaper than the 500GB ones. So I'm tempted to pick up a 12GB and since I'm only interested in 2 or 3 games for now, see how far I can go before I need to upgrade with a hard drive. So a couple of questions:

1: A guy at work urges me to just get the 500GB model and be done with it. He reckons he used up about 10GB just for All Stars Battle Royale! What sort of milage could I reasonably expect from the 12GB model?

2: Are there any problems upgrading? Supposed to be really simple, but has anyone had any problems? If there is some sort of chance I'll get stuck with only 12GB and no way of upgrading, then I'd rather not take the risk and just get the 500GB straight up...

I don't know about the slims, but the fats will accept any laptop size SATA hard drive.

I'm sure you can fit any size external to the 12gb units.

I think 12gb is enough considering you do not install the game like you do on the Xbox 360.

You can map to the home server to pull off films etc.

Besides they are nice and small and kind of cute.   :D

500gb?  Just get the 160gb version and upgrade later on.

If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

There are 3 differently shaped PS3 models out there (four models if the 12GB is different, which I've never seen).

1. Original (Also in a slightly different PS2-playing version with extra ports).
2. Slim (my favorite, and probably the one you are referring to)
3. Superslim (I guess thats what they call this one) that originated with some Uncharted game and a 500GB hard drive. This model looks like a 2nd model Sega CD with its pop-up door (well sliding door on the PS3) that looks and feels like a cheap toy.

Anyway, I've never messed with #3 (which I assume the 12gb is as well), but both 1 and 2 have easily replacable laptop hard drives.

IIRC the 12GB slims actually do not use a HDD it is 12GB of flash memory on the system board - so you need to buy the mounting bracket (caddy) if you want to install an internal hdd since the unit will not include one or use an external hdd. I remember some people complaining that Skyrim would not load to the 12GB. slim model since the installer said they did not have an HDD present. (not sure if other games also will not install but something to consider !)

From an article on Kotaku :
Quote
this particular PS3 will instead pack 12GB of flash memory, turning it into the PlayStation's rough equivalent of the Xbox 360's 4GB version. The 500GB version will still be available in those territories.

Those purchasing the 12GB model will still be able to upgrade and drop a HDD in there later; the only change is that when they do, that 12GB will no longer be available for internal storage.

This is an example of the 12GB for sale right now:

http://shop.target.com.au/p/playstation-3-12gb-bundle-with-rachet-clank-pro-gamer-hdmi-cable/P54146402

I'm only interested in new. Too me, buying a second hand modern console would be like buying a second hand PC. I just wouldn't do it.

I take it this is the bracket I should get:

http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/game/ps3/ps3-hard-drive-mounting-bracket/676766

and then a drive:

http://www.ozgameshop.com/internal-hard-drives/toshiba-mq01abd050-500-gb-internal-hard-drive-2-5-sata-300-5400-rpm-buffer-8-mb?utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=google+shopping+data+feed+(03/07/2013)&gclid=CJiOwv2mlbgCFcwgpQodJT8Ayg

So it would cost me about 260-270 for the privilege of putting it together myself. Or I can get a 500Gb like this for about ten bucks more, with two games I don't want but could sell for a few bucks:

https://ebgames.com.au/ps3-999908-New-500GB-PlayStation-3--Battlefield-3--Grand-Theft-Auto-IV-PlayStation-3

I sold myself- just went and picked up the 500 gb model (",)

Thanks for the input guys!

I think 12gb is enough considering you do not install the game like you do on the Xbox 360.

Thats not entirely accurate. Lots of PS3 games require you to install a portion of the game on the hard drive, you just don't copy the entire contents of the disc to the drive like you do on the 360. 12GB wont last long at all, but you can replace it with an laptop sata hard drive. I have the 120GB fat model and put a 500GB HD in it.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

Looks like you got it ! -- the 12GB. is mainly for people on a really tight budget that will wind up adding the HDD later - after they find out some games will not install properly without a hdd. The cost pretty much comes out the same in the end (as does the profit SONY makes from the sale either way - which is why they added that version ! )
