You do realize you can invert your Y-axis in MAME so it works like the Coleco, right?

But then it's not authentic!  ;D Yeah, I could remap up/down for Looping. But I've already seen and moved onto some other shiny object.

legends of makai was so good at the arcade but so impossible even in mame if you did not get all the letters and write them down.  the first time i had most of the letters, i just used save states and tried all 26 letters for till i finally figured out the code.  getting to x was almost impossible.

Is it stable in MAME now? It randomly crashed in all versions I have tried, but it has been a long time since I ran a new build of MAME.

Yes! Looping it is. I pulled it up in the latest version and it plays great! It has some sound issues, but it doesn't crash anymore. FWIW, Gorf now plays good too. No more slow downs.

I first saw it in the 80's at a bowling alley. I only played it a few times because it was hard for me to control as a kid and I didn't want to waste my money. It was nice to finally "beat" it.

I never saw the arcade version of this game until around 2006. My only experience with it was on the ColecoVision, and I played the hell out of it. Going to to throw a newer version of MAME on my machine to try this again. I pretty much gave up on it ever being fixed.

How do I go about doing that?
I want to lock the amount of credits to a reasonable amount for each game . Keep it fun.

I like the ability to pause the game especially when I'm stuck in one of those insanely long queues at the supermarket. I can go back and finish off a level.  New Zealand's story is a perfect example.
