Hai Sjaak,

College of mine was also at the Eurocade, and when I talked about your project, he did tell me that he was very exited about your project.
Always good to see and hear about other people who love the Arcade scene also.

I didn't make it to the Eurocade to see it in real life :censored:

You'll record us some video of it at Eurocade 2014, right?

Of course and I'll also post video of all the other amazing cabinets.

Any pictures or video of the finished cabinet?... I've been waiting for this game to come out, can't wait to try it on my cabinet.

Fantastic work.  I love seeing retro-inspired cabinets for this new stock of indie games.

I'm certain the developers will love it too.

This is a seriously rad build. The edges of the side art are a very nice touch. Kinda reminds me of burned film edges.

I've never heard of this game until now. This build makes me want to check it out.

I just lost out on an old Atari Space Duel that I was going to convert to one of these. Ugh. I hate Kijiji.

I was on my way to go and pick it up and the guy emailed me saying "the renters downstairs came up and gave me cash for it".  I replied and was like "Ask them if they'd like a little cash over what they paid for it", but he said they weren't currently interested.

I had a Simpsons fall through on me today right after as well. I hate Kijiji.

Tried it today. The price on Steam is the same as pre-ordered price by the way.

Great game so far.  It also allows you to play with 2 players on the same keyboard so it's Arcade friendly. You do have to hit enter to bypass the Home screen though.

Also the lowest selectable resolution is 640x480 so it should support arcade monitors. It even formats it to 4:3 if needed.

I think this is a great idea for a build.
I just came across this game the other day and I think it's a great idea for a game in general.
It seems like the simple arcade play is coming back in a lot of these newer games.

I still keep knocking around the idea of building a cabinet based on the classic Jumpman game.

Dude, I LOVE Jumpman.  I still break it out and play it.  I had the PC version for awhile but I usually just play the C64 emulation.  I still have the original (bootlegged, haha) 5.25" floppy for my Commodore 64(which I still have) in a closet upstairs.  The only problem I've encountered with arcade emulation is needing to set the run speed at the very beginning of play.  Whether you want the game to run faster or slower than the default(I always play on a 2).  Anyway, if you decide to do this, I'd love to see the result and maybe even help with some art or just give my opinion as a lover of this game.  Long live Jumpman!

Sorry, jumped on an old comment there before I went to the end of this thread.  WOW!  Awesome work on the Lovers cab.  Great job!

DL'd and played through the tut last night, the controls on a qwerty are awkward - at least with the default layout.  Kept thinking that the game really needed a spinner.  You only need the joy (far as I can tell) to move about the ship - which seems like poor design since everything else is rotational based.  Probably a rotary joy instead of a spinner would be the way to go.  Need to play with the settings and see what's feasible but, while the game is gorgeous, my initial reaction is that they missed the boat on some simple game play mechanics that could have reduced the learning curve and made the game more initially accessible.

My initial though was, "this is just silly, why can I move my space pet around the ship faster and more better than I can move myself?" I'm not playing to climb ladders and ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow---, I'm playing to kill aliens, so rather than press "B" to back out of a station why not press "B" to select station, use the spinner to chose, send your little guy off, same way as you do the pet with "N" and call it a day.  Boom, eliminated the joystick and really simplified the controls in my opinion.

I think the choice to move around the ship using a joystick was intentional, to add a platform feel to the game and to make it a bit more diffcult. But it's true, the cat (or dog) moves a lot faster than you do.

I like the way it is designed and it really works when playing with two people.

Which joystick model did you use?

After playing the game, it seems analog is preferred by the game mechanics, but maybe an 8 way would give decent control?
Games: Super Punch Out, Fix It Felix Jr, DK, DKjr, DK3, PC10, UMK3, TRON, MS-Pac, Pac, Centipede (2x), Robotron, Galaga, Space Invaders, Street Fighter 2 CE, X-Men vs SF, BuckHunter HD, 2X Custom Vewlix, Custom Nintendo VS 3/4, Atomiswave

Any 8 way joystick should be fine. I used a zippyy.

I get that, I just think that element of difficulty is misguided.  If the designers check in here I'd say that adding an option to direct the main player like the space pet would be a great gameplay addition, ditto spinner/scroll wheel support for aiming/station selection.  The only other thing they'd need to do is add the steering station into the selectable list for the primary player.  With a spinner it'd be easy to just rotate around until the station you need is highlighted.  Boom, flawless control integration and eliminates what in my opinion, is a poorly executed portion of the gameplay...but optional for the "purists" that love those damn ladders.

I think those ladders adds to the difficulty of the game, because of the frantic movements you have to be involved in while switching from turret to shield to thruster,  yes the ladders are frustrating, but necessary for the challenge I believe

Awesome work!

There's a game I love that is modern, but made with love for arcade classics. It's on the 3DS and Wii U call Whoa Dave! I thought it would also make a great cabinet.

I am really enjoying this game. I just played through the tutorial on my desktop computer and using the keyboard would take some getting used to. That said, I think it will be a lot of fun with 2 players running on an arcade cabinet.

I think that the cat moves around faster because it is supposed to simulate player 2. A real player 2 would just go wherever needed and wouldn't distract player 1 from their current role like the cat does for selection of next station so maybe they speed the cat up to make up for that difference. Speeding the cat up would keep the pace of the game the same with or without a real player 2. Just a thought.

Yeah. Works with keyboard, joystick and Xbox 360 without issues.  This is how all games should be.

Fired it up on my machine yesterday. Looks great (4:3) on a 27" monitor!

I was wondering how well this plays with a 4way joystick (or keypad)?

Watching the gameplay videos, it looks like each player is controlling one item at a time: engine, gun, shield, etc.  And each item spins around the ship.  I imagine that would be hard to do accurately with a keypad.  Wouldn't it be easier if each player had a spinner. I guess the original game doesn't support any kind of analog control, but it seems like it should.
