Video Game (console) Tower
« on: May 24, 2013, 10:20:50 pm »
Has anyone used one of these?  Do they hold up over time?  Is there enough free space or do the consoles over heat?

Here are some other examples I am considering:

I am curious to see others examples.

I like the 4x4 Lack cubbieholes personally. That'll be what I go for when I start setting up my retros.

Years ago I used an old style dresser drawer that I modified to accept my 8/16 bit era consoles. I worked ok and kept my consoles out of prying eyes. I now have something similar to the 2x4 cubes there but one made specifically as an entertainment system. It's OK but cable management is ass.

the "dedicated" gaming stands suck. They sucked when they were around twenty years and they still suck now. They're like KMart furniture. It's good for a couple of years but if they haven't fallen apart after that you'll be looking for something more suitable anyways.

if those three are your only choices go with the cubicles and install a back panel and drill out some holes for cable management.

It's not so much that they are cheap (they are that's besides the point) but they don't store a lot.  I mean yeah if you have guitar controllers and chargers and such they hold all of that but they generally hold 20 games max.  And they are awkwardly layed out so that they take up a LOT of floor space for what they store.    You are better off getting a regular entertainment center and putting them in that, or a custom solution as the others have stated.

For games this is what I use:

The reason I get them is because they are really cheap (I can typically get them for around 15 dollars), you can bolt multiple sets together to make a really tall one, and they waste zero space.  That being said I've gotta pick up another one as mine are getting full.

For the old consoles I made some custom cubbie holes but honestly after living with them for a few years I don't care for them.  They store the consoles and accessories just fine but where everything is so boxed in it makes it difficult to see the consoles, and I kind of want to display them.

If I were to do it over again I would probably get one of those shelving systems were you mount two rails to the wall and use glass shelves at a slight downward angle.
