I don't think the game supports 4:3 resolutions.  I tried putting one in manually and it automatically changed it to the nearest 16:9 resolution upon the start of the game.

1152x648 is the lowest res it shows in the options menu for me.

Your monitor doesn't have to be 16:9 mind you, it just needs to support 16:9 resolutions.

I would contact wbgames on this one.... it shouldn't be terribly difficult to make a patch for this.

So does it need to be connected to Steam all the time or will it run in offline mode if placed on a cab that has no network connection ?? (I assume it needs to connect on installation to verify\update but does it require the connection every time the game launches)

Doesn't seem to have any issues in offline mode.  Keep in mind I'm running a hacked version specifically so steam can't see me though.  Of course you could run the same version if you ran into issues.

Apparently most of the asset files are swappable just by renaming.

Here is a guy who swapped the intros/exits and fatalities of a bunch of characters.

 :hissy:

(updating my video card drivers corrected it, but it's kinda funny based on 4:3 resolutions not working)

Yeah people are reporting the issue.  Apparently it has to do with dual head video cards, particularly the NVidia ones and multi-monitor setups.  The game reads the dxdiag.txt to determine your possible settings, but it sometimes screws up when reporting.  The workaround is to disable all monitors and video cards but the one you'll be using, create a dxdiag.txt manually, and then save it as read only.

I tried the game on my 16:10 cab monitor and it worked, so I don't think this is an aspect ratio thing, I think it's a reporting thing.

Oh btw... they've already released a tool to encrypt/decrypt the coalsecd.ini which stores a lot of settings, including viewport and framerate settings, so there might be a fix there as well.

All we are waiting on in terms of mods is a .xxx file packer.  The old unpacker for the consoles works, but the encrypted files have reverse endingness, so you can't pack mods back up and you can't edit the textures yet.  But that is a simple enough fix.

Yeah it is, but the reason I didn't post it is because I've been having trouble packing it back up.  It's on a Russian site.... I'll see if I can track it down again, but my guess is it'll take one more round of bug fixing before it's ready.

Ok I figured it out... it was throwing me off because the re-packed files are much larger than the originals for some reason.

Download the second tool in that thread (the one that says "download")

How to use:
1.  Save the program somewhere safe and inside it's working folder make a folder called "build" (could be called anything)
2.  Launch program and click on the "..." select your "build" folder
3.  now click the "extract"  button  and you'll be prompted to select a file.  Select either the "coalesced.ini" in the config folder, or one of the language files in the localization folder
4.  LEAVE THE PROGRAM RUNNING.... this just makes it easier.
5.  inside your build folder you'll now see a mk9game folder... keep going through the folders until you find the file you wish to edit.
6.  Open the file using a editor that supports the unix format... I recommend notepad++  Note that the notepad supplied in windows will NOT work.
7.  Edit to your hearts content... when done, simply save.
8.  Go back to the mk9 tools program which should still be running.  Click on pack
9.  you'll now find a "new_coalesced.new" in the same folder as the exe... rename accordingly.
10.  BACKUP the file you are wanting to replace and then add your newly created file.

11.  You are done!

Ok and now for my first, rather simple mod.

The attached English language file has been modified to replace the "Press Space" messages, with a more arcadey "Press Start" message.  Put it in your localization folder.

Enjoy!

Ok one more quick mod that rectifies a pet peeve of mine.  Ever since John Tobias left the MK team, they don't spell out Noob Saibots full name anymore.  You'll notice that even though the announcer says "Noob Saibot" all his text as well as his health bar simply say "Noob"

So this new patch changes press space to press start and restores Noob's full name.

Again extract to the localization folder and enjoy.

No problem.  I'm patiently waiting for the .xxx repacker and texture editor to get finished.

If you poke around in the language files, both Kintaro and Goro have ending text.  Shao Kahn has a spot for one as well.  Obviously an ending also has some still image animations and sounds but I could modify some existing endings replacing them with appropriate graphics and use a dummy, silent sound file.  The old PS3 mods showed that you can add these guys properly into the arcade mode of the game.  I want to take it a step further and give them proper endings and such.  Ditto for all the bonus NPCs.

Then who knows....  I'd sure like to get Motaro into the fight.  ;)

Anybody running this at 800x600 resolution? That's all my D9200 supports.

Took a gamble...got the game...
800x600 is supported on my D9200.  It auto-detected.
Not the prettiest way to play...but it works.  Kind of looks the same as the resolution my Xbox360 would default to.

Yeah it's become apparent that the "this aspect ratio is not supported" and similar errors are just related to the video card and your settings... it has nothing to do with your actual monitor.

Although I don't know if anyone getting it to run at 640x480 yet, so that might be an issue.

Kintaro and Kahn are now playable, although a little bit of cleaning up is needed.

Well most of it was done on the 360/ps3 versions already... they are just copying what was already done.  It's still impressive though.

I don't have a lot of coding time right now so I've been sitting back to let them do their thing, but if they get stuck on getting the bosses playable without breaking other stuff I might step in for a day or so.  If nothing else I could do a exe "trainer" and have the special characters activate similar to how you did it in umk3  (select a certain character and hold a certain button while pressing start).  Then I could do a texture hack and make it the coolest/stupidest sounding game ever "Ultimate Mortal Kombat:  Komplete Edition" ;)

Well that only took a week.

The bosses are now properly selectable thanks to a random user manually converting the ps3 hack from little to big endian.

http://d-h.st/rpu (click on the black download button)

The bosses can't jump, but this is normal (they can't jump as npc characters either).

From what I've heard a proper packer tool is incoming, meaning proper skin and mesh mods will be possible.

If anybody figures out or runs across a solution for playing the game on WinXP, please post here.

That limitation was quite a letdown for me, since my arcade cab is WinXP based.  My main reason for staying with XP is that I can't get newer nVidia drivers to ouput two different resolutions for my PC monitor and TV through component-out in clone view mode.  That allows me to use a sane resultion on the PC monitor for maintenance work and the required 480i for the old CRT TV.  This and many other inconveniences would make it laborious for me to switch over to Win7.  I dual boot to both OS's right now but have everything set up for XP.

Thanks!

I wouldn't hold your breath for XP.

Programmers don't keep cab owners in mind when they create this stuff.  I am on the XP wagon as well, i have so much stuff linked to XP on my cab, that an upgrade would be a month long troubleshoot to get everything back to where it was.

This one game is not worth that, especially a hacked version, that i guarantee will be buggy.

I love this game, and want it in a cab as well. Just go to CL, folks are giving away ps3's in favor or the new ps4 release, i grabbed a ps3 120 gb slim for $50.00.

Will take it to the local hack shop to have it jailbroken, and build a small dedicated cab for it.....

Anywho, all is lost for XP........

I've all but given up on this.  It isn't that it isn't possible... especially now that we know the game only uses dx9 despite the system requirements...  it's just that MKKE is hard to memory hack.

The game won't run out of fullscreen, you can only get back to the desktop with it running via c+a+d and when you get back the game is taking up 100% of your system resources, so it takes FOREVER to do a memory search unless you know specifically what to look for.  I was looking for three very simple addresses to un-gimp Shang Tsung's morphs (found them btw) and it took me the better part of an hour.  And I knew what to look for.

When you say it won't run in full screen, do you mean it runs in a window or that you can't get it to run in 4:3?

Depends upon the setup.  NRS is working on a patch that'll fix some issues, but right now if you have a laptop setup or a strange multi-monitor setup you might run into issues.  There are workarounds of course.

I'm sure this is just amazon not knowing the product well, but the pre-order page for the retail disc edition scheduled for an Aug 6th release, shows the following:
Platform: Windows Vista / XP

Should we make anything out of this?

I doubt it.  Myself I would wait for it to come out, but amazon is always wrong in regards to that stuff.  I once bought a supposedly xp version of MadDog from them that ended up being the old dos version.  Since then I always look at the picture of the box they show.

We could play the stupid card, buy it, claim our money back for specifying the requirements incorrectly, and hope we can keep the disc  >:D
They probably have a hidden clause somewhere that they are not responsible for the item description.

Is the downloadable version validated through steam by requiring a connection the Internet while playing?
Would the disc version be expected to work the same way, instead of requiring the disc?

I ask because I have both, SFIV and SSFIVAE and the former requires the disc to be on the drive, while the latter is validated through the Microsoft Live store.  The disc requirement is more of an annoyance than going through the MSN Live validation.

steam validates the game when you're online, steam can be put into offline mode for at least months at a time. You could just buy it then apply the DRM bypasses like I do.

I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.
