I'm definitely in just to support the PC release, even though I suck at fighting games lately

It is kind of annoying on the SFIV games, isn't it?

Yeah after reading about MK, I went to play it and spent awhile trying to log in.
Played a bit of arcade mode, paused for awhile and it timed me out which boots you out losing your progress. Pretty lame.

No xp support. Aaargh.

Seriously? Windows XP is 11 years old. Time to upgrade. Microsoft is dropping support for XP on on April 8, 2014. Can't expect smaller software companies to continue to support it!

I wonder how the gameplay of PC fighting games like this would be on an arcade machine? I assume they lack the coin operation and short play time. Newer games seem to be the sit and do a story line type. Would a game like this ruin the arcade experience and be better played on actual pc or gaming console? Just curious.

You do realise that many people in the emulation scene using native resolutions are still using XP as it's THE platform to go to? I'd love to upgrade, but CRT Emu Driver is still only XP.

What he said.... there's zero excuses not to support xp... at least not on a fighting game or something sort of low end like that.

Howard, as a programmer: do you think this has anything to do with the engine Mortal Kombat is using? Maybe they'll release an update... or CRT Emu Driver for win 7 will finally be released...

Well it depends really.  I haven't seen the news about no xp support, so I don't even know what they did to it.

Lots of times they just say that vista or above is required... it really isn't, they just mean that they aren't going to support xp.

Hmm... ok it looks like they went with DX 10.  That shouldn't be a huge issue.  People are manually installing dx10 on xp these days.  Now it's one of those deals where there's no guarantee it'll work, but in theory, yeah it should run ok.

Here is the most popular method  (having a hard time finding current articles)

http://www.techmixer.com/install-directx-10-on-xp-with-directx10-rc2-pre-fix-3/

It works, but there are various issues with it.  Your card has to actually support DX10 as well, some dx9c games might complain, ect....

Great, guess we'll have to wait and see if we can make it work in xp.  I'm using an radeon hd4350. I think it's compatible with dx10. Mk9 was such a great game and perfect for an arcade cabinet. Hopefully it's cabinet friendly.

I don't have a whole heck of a lot of time these days but I"ll try to look into it.  What error do you get?

Obviously this is an important release to me.  Enough to where I might upgrade everything and put win 7 on my cab if I can't get it working.

I'm going to switch as soon as crt emu driver is going to support win 7.

I'm not at home right now but it's something like "the program may not be installed properly". It's working like a charm on my win 7 machine and what's even better is that the game seems very cab friendly.

I was going to do it the other way around... hack the game to report back that it's running on win 7.

My guess though is that it's just a folder thing.  (Drivers are in totally different folders).  After figuring out the dependencies, throwing all the dlls in the game folder would probably work.

It really depends on what you need when you're screwing around with crt's. Screwing around with crt and win 7 is a pure mess and the only thing that keeps me from upgrading. No, lcd is not an option and there's no way hlsl comes close to the real thing. I tested about 30 different presets, different lcd's with 4:3 aspect and tweaked hlsl for days to match any of my crt's. So I'm pretty much stuck as groovy mame and crt emu driver are the best things happened to the mame scene in terms of authentic and easy so for native resolutions.

Ps.  I really want to play mk. God,  I hate compatibility issues.

I'm installing an .....ahem... acquired version as we speak.  Since it's normally connected to steam I don't want to get my account destroyed via running a hacked game.  I'll buy the thing once I determine where I'll be installing it.

Man.... I'm usually not one to gush about a port, but they did a really good job porting this!  Steam isn't intrusive as it can typically be and keyboards and joysticks work right out of the box, no configuring needed.  Although they haven't significantly improved the model quality, the texture quality, mapping and similar effects are far more detailed than they are on the 360 version, that is if you can run them.  Even at the "lower" settings, it looks every bit as good as it did on the consoles.

So go buy this one.  It's actually a good enough port to where I think I'll upgrade my arcade pc just for this.

$22.50 at Green Man Gaming with coupon code: GMG25-BAWQB-8UQWG
(good through July 13)

http://www.greenmangaming.com/s/us/en/pc/games/action/mortal-kombat-komplete-edition/

Bought it the other day, but just now installing.

For those who haven't purchased from Green Man Gaming before, they just email you the Steam key after you pay.  I've bought a ton of driving games from them cheap in the last few months.

agreed, the port is amazeballs, its like playing the 360 version with better graphics. I still like MKII better though ;)

You know  there has been a mk9 model viewer for some time.  I wonder how long before we get some mods?  I'd sure like to get that Freddy Kreuger pretender swapped out with the genuine article.  Shouldn't be terribly hard... modify the face, swap out the sounds.

I've got a splitting headache and it's giving me terrible insomnia tonight (has for a few days actually).  So I've been killing time by mucking around in the game.

Before you do that.  There have been some people reporting errors that have nothing to do with xp.... the video card memory detection for the game is a little screwy.

EP you might wanna try this:

Your settings for the game are stored in %appdata%mkke
In there is a file called dxdiag.txt which stores all the known info about your pc for the game to use.  Go to the dedicated memory section, change that to 1024 and save.  Also set the file to read only.  This solves a lot of random issues.

Also some things I've noticed:

Game assets are in the .xxx format.  This was the same format used on the 360 and there are tools out there to extract stuff from it.  So modding is possible.

The videos are the 360's inferior 720p vids in bik format.  Somebody needs to take a ps3 version of the game and rip out the 1080p versions, which were also in bik format and should be drop-in replacements.

While we are on the subject, you can get rid of most of the splash screens by renaming the two intro vids and the hvsthunderlogo vid.

ShaoKhan, Goro and Kintaro have all their asset files in tact, including some fatalities.  There was a hack for the 360 version of the game to allow you to play as the characters in regular arcade mode, so it should be possible to do so via a trainer on the pc.

The bonus characters now have their own slots in the Necropolis as they should.

My head is finally easing off, but before I go to bed.

It's barely been out a day and the hackers are already going to town with this one.  The file structure is very similar to the ps3 version.  This is decidedly a good thing.  The ps3 version had mods to add in the boss characters properly as selectable characters, among other things.  The only thing holding them back is the fact that coalesced.ini is encrypted this time (the file that holds all the settings).  This is typical of unreal engine pc ports though, so give them a while to crack it and we'll have mods galore!

Ok I'm out... have fun kids!

So I just realised there is no MKKE folder in appdata on my cabinet xp machine. I tried to reinstall the game and had no luck. When starting the game it says "reinstalling might help" or something like that. I allready changed the appdata file on my win 7 machine and everything works fine.

What might be a problem (or could be) is that I'm using hacked drivers for the gpu (crt emu driver). They're based on catalyst 9.3. Pretty old. I installed the hacked directx 10 on the xp machine and the directx tool says it installed properly.

No, not xp yet.

I'm just playing around with it on my win 7 machine... it'd take a lot of dedicated time to do the xp fix (if it's even possible).

I even installed windows 7 as a dual boot on my arcade cab, but now I get a error that 4:3 is not supported with my desktop @ 640x480.
Strange thing is that it runs fine in 640x480 on my main pc although with big black borders...as long as my desktop resolution is 16:9.
