Target, and many other places, sell these no slip mats that are just for this purpose.

Lots of stuff will work of course, but you want to use something gentle that isn't going to ruin the carpet underneath. Carpet tape will work, but when you have to pull the matt up it's going to tear the fibers out of the carpet. That stuff is really sticky.

What? You want to protect the carpet? :lol Yeah, I wasn't clear with my carpet tape suggestions. I was thinking a little square of tape in the corners and middle. to just keep it from sliding or the corners picking up. Not enough tape to grip fierce and ruin the rug. I'm only suggesting that above those rug grip things, because in my experience those things make the rug less comfortable underfoot.
Howard_Casto:
Yeah I know, it's going to pull the fibers out. Anything that's tacky enough to keep something from slipping on carpet is tacky enough to pull it up. If that isn't an issue then go for it.
The rubber gripper matts that the others have linked to are really your best option. You can't tell they are there on hardwood floors, so I think it'll do fine on carpet.
