  • Brakes are overrated
Hello All,

Ive been lurking on this site while I build my mame cabinet and I finally made enough progress to justify a build thread.

OVERVIEW
1. The reason I did a half and half was to make a complete package out of one machine. There are some unorthodox parts to this build and some was due to the budget and others were for utility purposes. We needed a TV and sound system in the backyard for when we have friends over and I decided to take it a few steps further. It will run Hyperspin (mame, popular older consoles, model 2, supermodel, dreamcast, GC/Wii, PS/PS2 and PC games), cable TV, Internet radio and Tv, Karaoke and maybe a physical console or two.

Thanks to my dad for the woodwork.

PARTS and COSTS
1.$50 Empty Cabinet on Craigslist (It had tekken tag artwork but, I found older unknown artwork so, fear not purist, I did not cut up a classic)
2.$100 32" Sharp TV on Craigslist
3.$20 TV mount on Craigslist
4.$100 (2) WWE Brawl Fighting stick from Amazon ( I went for the premade sticks due to save $ and wiring time) **Xbox 360 sticks are Plug and Play. PS3 ones are not but, you can make it work***
5.$40 Logitech Momo Steering wheel on Craigslist
6.$20 for 40ft Bright red T-molding gamemolding.com ebay store
7.$20 for carbon fiber vinyl for the CP
8.$200 for Custom Sideart and Marquee from Gameongraphix ($50 went having it custom designed to my dimensions)
9.$30 Power supply for the speakers, fans and Marquee light
10.$15 for 92mm fan and 12" PC Case mod light
11.$40 for paint, brushes, rollers and Bondo
12. Logitech k400 wireless keyboard $30 at walmart
Reused wood laying around in the garage
Reused a spare media PC (phenom II x4 945, 3gb, SSD and radeon 4550)
Reused car speakers and 10" sub
TOTAL SO FAR:$665
Original Budget=$450 (Oooops) ;)

BUILD
1. Tear down and widen frame. The cab came with a 25in Tv and that was boring so we chopped and widen the Cab to fit a 32" tv.

2. Adding the Buttons. I removed wires and circuits from the brawl stick and only kept the top lid. I cut a lip on the wood to make it sit flush and used bondo to mold it the wood.

3. I made the CP fit both fighter stick and the steering wheel in the middle.

4. The elephant in the room. Since it will likely be use more as an outdoor TV than arcade, I added an adjustable arm to move the TV to any viewing angle so we can watch TV comfortably with having to move the entire cab

5. CP is finished. I used carbon fiber vinyl since it was cheap, keep with the racing theme and it was cheap(I am/was running out of money). I took apart the buttons and spray painted the outer rims so It wouldn't be black on black. The start and select buttons on the Brawl stick were on the side of the original case so I have to hack it up to so they would be up top with the other buttons. The red button in the center will be the "Engine start" button that turns on the PC

6. Some of the artwork is up. I still need to do the other side. It was the most expensive part of the build but it worth it because it give it character.

7.I finish the exterior work. All thats left is cleaning it up and reconfiguring Hyperspin. I played a few games as a test run and next week ill finish the configurations.
I had to christen the cab with Outrun

GRID

Very interesting design you've got there.

It's not something I'd do, but it turned out pretty nice!

It's tough to tell from the perspective of the pictures, but did you extend the cab on both sides, or is it wider on the player 2 side?

Thanks everyone!

The bottom half is not extended for a few reasons. It would serve no purpose other then looking more uniform and my dad's woodworking skills/tools are amateur at best so, it would only cause more issues. Luckily, I have painted a few cars so, my bondo abilities masked a lot of the rough woodworking.

I added new some small touches to cab.

The new balltops came from focusattack. They are clear bubble seimitsu lb-39.

I also added a homemade Ferrari/Sega keychain to coindoor to keep with the outrun theme.
