Popeye CRT Nintendo Bartop !!!! FINISHED !!!!!!!
« on: April 05, 2013, 06:39:09 am »
Hi there,

I'm new to this forum so this will be my first w.i.p. trip here.

After 2 VerticCade ( Koenigs.dk) I will go for a classic cab theme in bartop size.

This one will have a crt and a xbox .. so 2 things I'm new with... before I used the Lcd an pc stuff...

So, I hope to see you soon and I insert some pictures from my prev. build

Greetings

First I have to deal with the Xbox to softmode it and get al the games working....
So if that's ready, I'm going to build the cab that I have in mind for it....

So, nothing special going on right now, but we keep on posting ;)

It is usually a good idea after discharging a tv, to wait 20 mintues or so and and then discharge again, just to be sure.

Nice to see you to Tony.

I softmode the Xbox yesterday, so now I have to put coinops on IT.
First I wanne try to put some games on the basic 5gb harddrive. Maybe a lite version of coinops?

After struggle with usb sticks to softmode the xbox, I had to order a memorycard for it.
When it was arrived, I made a action replay card, to solder a usb cord on it.

Now the softmode was done very quickly

Yesterday was a struggle with a harddrive to replace ... the whole process worked fine, till a error came up at fatx format of the 30 gb drive.

I checked the compatible list of harddrives and I order 2 drives ( 40 and 80 gb  for a total 12,50 euro   still a Dutch basterd

So I did also the Coinops5 reduce to a level that it will fit on a 40 gb drive... and delete the psx and other console stuff.
When I can pickup Tuesday the harddrives, I can finish this and finally starting with the building part...

greetings.

So finally I past the test on Install Mame and some roms, to test things out.

You can see that a Horizontal game looks better than a Vertical game on this small tv.
But I like it to be a small cab, after two big screens ( 15 and 19 inch

I'm just not sure if I only put Mame on the cab or the whole deal with Coinops5 ?

It's gonna be a classic theme bartop... so, i think that only arcade games suit the best?
What do you guys think?

Keep the game count low and groom it well for the bartop.  It will be much more enjoyable that way.

Bigger harddrive installed and Visionary 2 up and running.

I think now it's time for ACTION  8)
Only thing I'm struggle with is.... How many buttons ? I want keeping it simpel, but, if you wanna play all the games, maybe I don't get enough buttons....   :banghead:
I was planning to use 3 action buttons... the original theme has one button, so I have to redesign the cp a bit..
Now on my MameCade I have 6 buttons, and I don't even use them all....

As you can see in my prev. pictures I took, I love the popeye theme.
So this will be my next Bartop build and Nintendo cab transform into a Bartop model.

Small crt vs small bartop I hope  >:D

Lots of ideas for this one.
In my mind it's 99% done, but the only thing I'm not sure of is the controlepanel   :banghead:
Specially the buttons layout  :hissy:

I just depends on what you want to play.  I just got done with my DK machine and I used 3 buttons.  I can play about 99% of what I want to play on it.  I think one of the shmups uses 6 buttons.  I don't play fighters though and I have a NeoGeo cabinet, so I don't need to play those on it ;)

That's the same thing I was thinking about.
My first cab had 4 buttons and I used only 3  ::)
My last one had 6 and I never used them all, because I don't play fighters, But I got a lot of questions on the first build, if I got one with 6 buttons....  :banghead:

So I think that I go for the 3 button setup, NeoGeo games are mostly played with max 3 buttons, so this cab can handle that to...

Thanks and Greetings

Hi,

Which buttons do you like? the first cab with the 4 button layout or the 6 button layout?

A little update here:

Scale the whole thing down to Height 75cm .. but it has to be a little bit bigger ...    :banghead:
The crt is to big for it, so it's gonna be a big bartop    :hissy:

Tomorrow I make a bigger one, it's almost a full cab

What do you guys think of the concept, I like the shape this way, but do I need to cut the bottom part a bit? Last 2 pictures are cut at the bottom..

both, and try to not do multiple posts in a row, you can answer everyone's question in one, cuts back on wasteful and longer threads than needed.

First cab: These are from a dutch website.

Second cab is from a german site:
These are the small menu buttons:

These are the Action buttons:

I printed the text and icons on glossy paper.

I would, but the head Konkey Donger himself, Pinball Jim, deleted all his posts and simply disappeared. He basically built a Donkey Kong bartop using the top half of a DK cabinet. It came out really nice, except that the theme was somewhat....rapey.

I thought the proper title for PBJ was the King of Dong.   :lol

Not to be confused with the King of Kong.   ;D

Here are a few Nintendo Bartops

These guys did a great job!

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,122793.msg1310811.html#msg1310811

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,94311.msg992012.html#msg992012

And there are the three that I made a few years back...

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,85596.0.html

Hope these help.  They were a blast to build and even more fun to play!

It's a combination of the 2 side concepts.

In my spare time this week, I have one side done.
Compares to my MameCade, it's a BEAST    >:D

I love the shape already    8)

Looking on the last picture, we can easily compare the width of a LCD Weecade design to a Nintendo themed bartop...
I'm amazed that both have almost the same footprint.

I was wondering that what really counts is the table space, or even a stand space. And the footprint is the most important measure here...

Damn... I still couldn't decide the design of my first cab: if I go to a ultra slim full height, or a bartop vertical weecade or a nintendo or galaga themed bartop...

BTW, congratulations for your design...

Thanks,

I made a copy of the Verticade,  I like that more than a weecade... And there are plenty of weecades already  ;)
My first build was a 15inch Verticade, than a 19inch Verticade and now the nintendo Because I like the shapes of it.

So go for the shapes you like the most and size depends on whats type of monitor you gonna use.

Good luck

Small update,
I didn't had the right size for my router, so I had to jigsaw the second side and after sandpaper a lot ( I'm very accurate  )It was finally done.
I had a lot in mind for today, but it was more time consuming then I had planned.

Thanks,

Me to, I like the cab and the game. First time played the game on a Philips videopac.
2 blocks of white sprites Where popeye an 2 big green sprites Where brutus ( BLUTO I think its in us )

I feel always bad that popeye cabs transform into donkey kongs... That's why I do a popeye ;)

Here a picture of the stunning graphics back in the days where I had to deal with, but what a great fun and gameplay .

Woodwork is almost done.
Next job is bezel and marquee.

Did used the bottom part from the tv, to secure the motherboard into the cab

Got e-mail that my order was send today, so the buttons and stick are coming soon  >:D
Now I got into the artwork to transform into vector art.

Bezel and marquee fits like a glove.
The back needed a lot of time to fit the audio/ video and Headphone plugs, but the outcome is very slick
Power-cable and buttons are done.

The last job to do are T-molding and placing the fans on the backdoor before I can finally do the paint job

This is looking out of sight!  Popeye is one of my all time favs and I'm always toying with getting one or building one.  You're doing it right for sure.  Can't wait to see more.

T-Molding and mdf primer done, so the bezel and marquee for the first time black.
Tomorrow it's time for the first ground color.

:notworthy:  ps: can somebody post a picture of the right color blue. I can print it and order the paint :notworthy:
I see a lot of different type of blue  :banghead: I don't have access to a original popeye or donkey kong cabinet

Hey there Superforg,

Hope this helps.  I did a little bit of searching and came up with this.

Here is the code for Nintendo Blue.

True Value Paint
Base: E25-D (Incano)

Interior Latex/Semi-gloss EZ Care

Colorant
D 2432
E 3436.5
V 31.5

It didn't help me much as the paint codes here in Japan are completely different, but it may help you.

Also most of the art that you will need for Popeye (if you don't already have it) is here.

http://vectorlib.free.fr/Popeye/

The only thing I could not find is the instruction sticker that goes on the black piece that holds the monitor glass.  Good luck and AWESOME work by the way.  These are a blast to build.  I had a lot of fun building the three that I did a few years ago.

This must be the color  :notworthy:
I think it's Semi Gloss or Gloss?

I got a color number for a paint brand in Holland, so I check this out today and see if it's match with this one.

Thanks

Second ground color done.
Inside of the cab is all dark en finished.
Side and front are a little blue so that the 2 finish paint layers are smooth and slick

Tomorrow I do the filling part so everything is ready for black & blue  >:D

Great work.

If you made a kit out of this that could be easily made to accept various monitors, you'd sell a ton.

Or at least make your outline files downloadable for others to cut their own panels, I know I'd be interested in making one of these for a Popeye or even make a wide body Mario one.

Small update:

Black semi gloss is a pain in the A.. very slow till it's dry... never seen before   :banghead:
Hopefully tomorrow it's all nice and semi shiny, so I can start with the final 2 layers blue

This is my first time I use semi gloss, I always using Gloss.
If black is drying very bad, I finish hem with gloss

Bet there's some just itching to build mini fix it felix jr's if you release plans.

As you've softmodded are you keeping the dvd drive or ripping out the controller board? If you stick a modchip in it you can remove it and disable the startup flubber, of course if you have a 1.0-1.5 xbox you can TSOP it and have the benefits without the cost.

EDIT: sorry cant see spare ram chip points on the underside of the motherboard so think it's a 1.6 so TSOP not possibel.

http://www.jakobud.com/plan-list.php

Here you can pick the plans I used, you have to mod it to the size of you own stuff that you gonna use ...

Yip, I skip the dvd drive and use only the controller board.
Softmod worked like a charm, bigger harddrive and software Vision 2 running fine, so I'm ready to go

Tomorrow for the last time the color blue and then I'm finished with the paint job
Black is nice and shinny and got the xbox already installed.
Got some things lined up for the crt to fix wires who are to short now so I can fix this.

It was a hell of a job this paint adventure, glad that's almost done   :notworthy:

Now I understand why it's so difficult to catch the right blue color on camera!!!!

Finally, the painting is done, so today was installing the hardware.
That's always a nice and relax job to do.

Installed the 2 fans in the backdoor with a molex connector so it's easy to remove the door.
I used my old and clean " sound proof " black underpants for the speakergrill    :laugh2:

Everything went very well, till I started up the xbox........ it gave me a service screen    :banghead:
Anyone who knows what's going on there   ( solved: I read that I had to remove and insert the dvd cable and it worked    )

Edit: No go, after starting up again, it gave me the same screen with the 21 code.
Before I had the 09 code
My 40gb harddrive is now a 4 gb in the system and no games on it...
    :banghead:

tomorrow it's printing time   I print just to get the feeling it's a popeye cab, graphics conversion is in alpha stage

Good eye finding the nick in the IDE cable.  This is a good opportunity to upgrade to a 100 or 133 speed cable.  The Xbox has ATA100 but shipped with an ATA66 cable ???

What software are you running?

Thanks Sharpfork, I read about that.
I run Vision2-R2, but I have to wait till R3 because the games stretch out, so they don't fit into the screen.
Hope the update is coming along very soon.

Great what they did with Vision 2 ... Great piece of software for a old hardware like the Xbox    :notworthy:

I would have gone with a LCD TV or LCD monitor and a magic VGA adapter.  That way you can have it looking authentic with scanlines or without, with a thinner build.

Nice work you did there.   :applaud:

I would have gone with a LCD TV or LCD monitor and a magic VGA adapter.  That way you can have it looking authentic with scanlines or without, with a thinner build.

Nice work you did there.   :applaud:

Thanks,

I talked the same way as you in the past, but once you build with a CRT... you know what Le Chuck is talking about.
Prev. Build I used lcd and scanliners, IT looked very good, but this is the real deal.

IT make sence with this Nintendo build to use a CRT.
Using a CRT in a weecade is not the way to go I think... But hey, I'ts a matter of taste and money

Now I'm going into hacking the gamepad so all the buttons have to work tonight, so I can play a decent game of POPEYE

Get yourself a KADE.  It is much better than hacking your controller.

I agree with the CRT.  I have a portable TV here but not enough room in the Weecade.  Maybe I'll have a go at your idea next time.

Nice graphics.  I love Popeye, I can remember when it first came out.  ;D

Is that a full size marquee, cpo, and bezel ?

The graphics look amazing.
What did you print them on ?
They look fantastic.

No, it's not a full size.Width of the cp, bezel and marquee are 39,5 cm  ;)

I printed them out on photopaper, just to give me the tast of the final look.
graphics need to be redone before it go to the printing office.

I fully endorse the CRT, and if you were to build it thinner, it would take away from the shape-homage of the original cabs.
Scanlines are not the only thing CRT's give off. You also get that phosphorous glow, and blending of pixels that LCD's just can't mimic. Sure there are software filters galore out there, but it's just not the same as it was BITD.  Yadda, yadda, I'm becoming a broken record...

Anyways, great build, and excellent choices!
The artwork really brings it all home!

I need some help with the gamepad hack....  ???

I've done that many times with pc gamepads, but this one is a pain in the A..

As you can see on the picture:

1: I always solder on the big pasrt where the d-pad was on and that worked always very good and simple.
But on this one at position 2: where the action buttons are, there is not much room for solder.... when I clean the place to get hold the solder, there is noting under it to get a grip, only at the small dot at the correct place.

3: for the ground I use always the other half of the d-pad and that's do the job, or do I have to drill a whole in the middle of the d-pad?

4:  Or do I have to clean up that little spot in between the circle, so I don't touch the ground area, and place a dot of solder there?

I had removed the triggers, but that was not a good idea, the menu was freaking out    :banghead:

At the end I insert a picture of the menu buttons, that's the only good news of tonight

So hopefully I get some tips and can I solder my second and last gamepad   :notworthy:

Hey there Superfrog,

Yar!  That looks like a nightmare!  You may wanna forego the hack of the controller and get yourself a xbox2jamma harness.  I have seen them on ebay a few times.  Or even easier than that pick up a Kade as someone else recommended.  It supports the original XBOX.

Honestly -- I'd skip the hack and just buy an encoder -- For example I ordered this No delay encoder ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/251241379915?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 ) for only $10.99 shipped from Hong Kong and it arrived in 9 days. It is seen by windows as a 12 button game pad (12 buttons + single joystick) and comes with the wiring (though they are very short and may need extendingg depending on where you mount it. Best thing about them is you avoid all the soldering with the hack and the possible shorting out and damaging of the MOBO. IMHO it's worth the $11 investment even though you already have the gamepad.

Since you're good with soldering, you can save a few bucks by picking up a Minimus AVR, programming it with the KADE firmware, and soldering the wires yourself like Degenatrons did for his first AVR Encoder.

I've done a ton of padhacks and the S controller can be a pain.  I used a Dremmel brush and took the black stuff off until I saw a bit of copper, the tiny dot you are talking about.  I would flux the area well and get a tiny drop of solder to stick on the copper.  Then I could get a very fine tinned kynar wire to stick to it.  After testing I put some hot glue over the solder point.  Sometimes the tiny point wouldn't work so I had to follow the traces on the pcb to the nest tiny dot and try there.

The ground is common so soldering to a spot off the dpad like you are used to is fine.  I personally would grab the ground from one of the triggers.

All that being said, check you PM's, this project is way too nice to have a padhack in it.

I'm glad you got it working.

Another tip: zip tie the wires together so they are less likely to pull off the padhack.

+1 on that.

Strain relief is your friend on a delicate soldering job like this.

To further protect the solder connections, you can also zip tie the wire bundle to one of those holes on the PCB.

It looks GREAT even with your test artwork - well done  :applaud:

What are you going to have the bezel artwork printed on? And how will you attach to the glass? Just curious as I would like to do something similar.

This project is AMAZING ! I love that you maintained the shape of the cabinet, the speaker grill, the art, etc etc.
Simply amazing ! LOVE THIS

Story of my life ... or rather a tragedy for me. :'(

No doubt if COMMODORE at 94 was not bankrupt, things would look different.

Just for example CD32 built it very quickly, to meet the market.

And The console  itself is amazing., But did not succeed the market, because companies did not want to develop to AMIGA...By the way have you ever thought to build a small arcade machine to CD32?

My prev. build ( MameCade 2.0 ) had the Amiga cd32 emulator in it  >:D
Some classic games i like to play with.

I started with the C16, C64, Amiga 500 and the Amiga 1200... Then it became very quite for a long time  :censored:
That was the time I HAD to step over to a pc, before the pc never was a option because the Amiga did the job very well for me.

Even the CDTV was a nice product, but fail to hit the marked. It was not the right time at the right place  :hissy:
What happens with the cd32 was also the case with the dreamcast back then.

But hey, we had a good time with it

Your right,
Look back the W.I.P. pictures update1-f and update1-g ...

That's the fun part of the progress, because you can't use the original parts ( it's downsize 50% ) you have to custom made some things.

No time yet for design the prints  :banghead:

Not use to work with Illustrator, so it's a slow progress, but it keeps me from the streets  :creeper:

I had some Illustrator files, but i'm very picky and "perfection" is my middle name, So I redo the whole thing  :banghead:

It's a very slow progress, but the outcome is very satisfying   >:D

Had to re position the arrows a bit, because they where a little bit off.

Just like the blue color of the bartop, it's a hell of a   :banghead: to got the right color for the artwork.
I got plenty of pictures of the Popeye nintendo cabinet, but the colors are all different.
So, is there somebody out there who owns a popeye cab and can tell me what picture has the right color   :notworthy:

Just like the big punch star, sometimes is orange, then yellow or a combination of these two... even the skin tones   :banghead:  :banghead:

I absolutely love the Nintendo cabs, and this bartop is a great tribute. Really nice work. Can I ask what you used for your marquee retainers? They look really sharp.

That's 2 pieces of U-Aluminium and a L-Aluminium strip.
Top of the marquee is a aluminium door strip.

Just got creative once in a while  ;)

If you need a cleaned-up version of the Instruction card, I posted one in this restoration thread for anyone to use. It's a PDF:

A little update here:

Scale the whole thing down to Height 75cm .. but it has to be a little bit bigger ...    :banghead:
The crt is to big for it, so it's gonna be a big bartop    :hissy:

Tomorrow I make a bigger one, it's almost a full cab

What do you guys think of the concept, I like the shape this way, but do I need to cut the bottom part a bit? Last 2 pictures are cut at the bottom..

Hello there, i was wondering if you have larger pictures of these blueprints by any chance? I downloaded the pictures to my phone but when i zoomed in to see the numbers they were still blurry. Thank you very much!

Small update

Bezel is a lot of work, but still on track !!!

Today finally installed the KADE  :gamer: What a great piece of hardware   :notworthy: :notworthy:
Easy to install and setup.... At last I can play digital AND ANALOG games  :gamer:

I made a switch to toggle between analog and digital controller.

Visionary 3 plus update are running GREAT !!!!
Finally I can spend some time with testing games and setting the buttons.

I'm thinking about keeping the button layout just how it is right now, or edit some extra buttons to it.
2 extra small buttons for the Black & White buttons just like the xbox controller.
And 1 extra big blue button as the Y button at the bottom, because I have A, B, and X buttons on the control panel right now and wanna keep this setting just like it is on the original Popeye cab.

Play most of the time arcade games, so 2 or 3 buttons are enough, but for some games the 4th button is needed   :banghead:

What do you guys think about this one?  :dunno

Very nice end result, it turned out really great!  Let's see a few pictures of it running and all lit up! :)

Make sure you rub out those air bubbles under the sticker decals though. If you can't get them out, I'd recommend poking a really tiny hole to let the air release.

Now that's it's all done, what would you do differently if you had to do it again?
What specific things were you proud of?

Thanks,

When I got the time, I made some nice pictures and movie.
I was to quick with installing the plexi, the stickers was still a little bit wet   :dizzy:
So tonight I try to rub out the bubbles

Most proud of the artwork and that the concept in my head is just right in front of me in real life after 4 months of hard work.
I only had to chance the game pad for a Kade ( what is the best move to play all games, analog and digital ) and a extra button under  the cp and switch for analog or digital.

What I would do differently next time, is using a crt monitor instead of a tv ..

Greetings

Thanks for asking, R2 is receiving a bit of a remodel on the CP, did it up complete in one color scheme and decided it didn't have enough pop/zing/wowee-ness so it's being redone more better  ;D  I'm hard at work, just not hard at work posting stuff right now.  FE is pretty much wrapped, might have one or two edits but we're pretty much there.  I'll get caught up  ;)

I really like the furniture feet you're using on your VertiCade in the OP. Can you give me more information as to where you got them? (Or even what they're called?! "Metal furniture feet" in Google isn't really coming up with anything close!)

Much appreciated!

Almighty

I'm bumping this because it's due for a bump.  Look at how awesome this is.  Just look at it.

Still one of my fav. builds even then I'm a KISS fan, this one tops my KISS pinball Arcade machine.

Yeah Yotsuya, It did hurt to cell this one, but I had no mancave and did need the cash for the next project  :banghead:

Been a while that I jump on the wagon , but i'm planning new things to come

Hope to see you soon....
