Anyone running driving games on a PS2 emulator?
« on: March 22, 2013, 09:14:39 am »
Last time I checked 2D games worked fairly well, but 3D games either didn't work or required a computer costing thousands to play.
There were a TON of driving games for the PS2.

Anyone running them on a PS2 emulator?

Define a computer "costing thousands to play".   I've for a PS2 emulator running (and the real thing) and what I've found is the CPU isn't the bottleneck - its almost completely the GPU.  When I upgraded my Core2Duo 3ghz from a 8800GT GPU to a GTX460 GPU - it made a huge difference as far as game playability.  I think I paid $145 for that card last year?

Oh a side note - I think you could slap together a pretty powerful system for like $800 these days.  I'll do a little shopping in a second and post the result here.

EDIT - Ok, I think you can get a rocking system for emulation for $800.  This is a rough budget.

Core i5 CPU - $200
Motherboard - $100 (you could go cheaper)
HDD - 1 TB is abotu $80 today
GPU - $150 (choose your flavor in this range - I think a Nvidia GTX 560 falls here today)
RAM - 8 GB for $40
Case - Nothing fancy for $30
PSU - $50 (I wouldn't go cheaper here)
Misc Tax / Shipping, depending on where you are - $100

Considering I spend more than that on my driving cabinet so far without spending a penny on the computer...  ;)

Unfortunately, my driving cabinet is back to the 8800GT for the moment.  So testing it with will have mixed results - I'd be happy to do it though.   (I can test them on the i5 / GTX 460 too to give you an idea of the difference)

What games were you talking about specifically that you'd like me to track down and test for you?

isamu had mentioned some of the Ridge Racer games.  I never had a PS2.
I'm just curious about some of the games in that series that I haven't played.

Also wondering if driving games in general work well enough to add pcsx2 to the list of emulators in the driving cab info thread.
No point in adding it if they are glitchy.

I'm not sure if PCSX2 supports wheels (I'm guessing yes?).

Then it looks like there is *some* FFB support as well.  http://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-LilyPad-0-10-0

I'll have to look to see what PS2 games supported FFB.  I know my G27 has (limited) PS2 support, although I haven't tried hooking it up.

As mentioned in the other thread I'm playing Ridge Racer V a lot on and off lately. Just unlocked the Master GP.

In my opinion that's the only driving game worth playing, because the majority of other driving games were developed to be much more beneficial with any of the Logitech ffb wheels. That's why I don't bother playing any of the GT games for PS2 because the PCSX2 devs seem to be too busy or just don't care to tackle USB port connection emulation, and consequently Logitech ffb wheel driver emulation. My bro Skidau is interested in tackling the problem but not without proper documentation of how the USB port connector works.

But by all means please list some good driving games for PS2 other than the GT series. Only ones I know of off the top of my head are Ridge Racer V, GT3/GT4, and a couple Burnout games. What else is out there?

Oh and there's the Enthusia, Tokyo Highway Drift, and Initial D games as well.

Furphur.....LilyPad's "FFB" support is rudimentary at best. It's not real ffb it's more like a half assed sloppy attempt at it using some hacked together Logitech code. Check out this thread....

Ahh, good stuff.

So..  we can analog support for the wheels without FFB support then?  Does the dual shock "rumble" feature do anything to the wheel?

I can get one of these for $50
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Driving-Force-Wheel-PlayStation-2/dp/B00005NJZJ

The description states is compatible with a bunch of games, but it doesn't specifically say any of them actually work with FFB.

Yeah you can get the standard controller rumble and analog works, but the game will think you're using a dualshock instead of a real wheel

So this morning I got my PS2 emulator going again.

Emulator - pcsx2-5602-windows-x86.7z  (latest DEV build)

PC - Core i5 3.4ghz, GTX 460 1gb

Grand Turismo 4 - Played one race, held a solid 60 fps the entire time.
Wipeout Fusion - Played one race, again held a solid 60 fps.  I thought I heard a couple of sound glitches?

I didn't tweak any emulator settings other than getting my Logitech F710 working.  (there are a TON of settings to tweak)

Tonight I'll try and get it going on the Core2duo 3ghz, 8800GT driving cabinet with the G27 wheel.

i have an actual ps2, and have not tried any emulators,
because my computer is not powerful enough.

i have several racing games.
------------------------------------------
there's a sega collection - it has a 60fps version of virtua racing

auto modelista - is a cell shaded racing game, looks neat

i have a nascar game,

also have a japanese sega rally 2006 game, which is very cool,
and includes the original sega rally in  it..

i still need to get sega's ferrari f355 though.

also have futuristic racer wipeout fusion.
and gran turismo 3 i think.

there's a huge list here:

I just tried "Tokyo Xtreme Racer - Drift (USA)" on my driving cab.

Good-
Seems perfectly playable on my Core2duo 3ghz w/ 8800gt video card (this is OLD by todays standards)

Bad-
I got the G27 working as analog steering just fine.  The throttle on the other hand was a little wonky.  I'll have to mess with the profiler a bit.

It really just further confirms Badmouth's comments about having to tweak every single game on a Driving Cabinet.

i got Outrun 2006 running on the PS2 emulator as well on the same system - plays perfect - the only thing I found is the car selection screen doesn't show the cars.  (lol)

I prefer the PC version of the game - it just looks better.

I have a softmodded ps2. When I get it finished, I might give that a try. If nothing else, I have a backwards compatible ps3.

it's been a few years, but the PCSX2 emulator works pretty well with games.

i've been enjoying sega rally 2006 lately, but i can't get sega rally championship working (graphical issues).

60fps, and runs smoothly.

a 4 year old bump for that?
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

better than starting a new thread.

anyways, the compatibility list for sega rally 95 says that is supposed to work. but i get all kinds of issues.

maybe an earlier version worked better.

sega rally 2006 works really well, even the rumble, vibration works on an xbox 360 controller. although i find that vibration is very annoying
and distracting during racing, so i turned it off.

there's also some good ps3 emulators out there, that i haven't tried out yet either. maybe someone can update a review of that.

https://rpcs3.net/

not sure what racing games are good on that.
