Griff!!  STOP! Heh heh...

I just had a great idea.  (Well, I think it's a great idea.)  Don't stand the barrel upright.  Put it on it's side, Put a bigger monitor in it so as to look like a regular cocktail cabinet.  Put it on legs that will allow the cabinet to tilt to the left 45 degrees and have the ability to add side by side two player controls for your horizontal games (Platform's and Shooters and such)  Think is would look cool.  If you don't make it I might have to.

Jigenjuke

Bonus points if you do this with a rotating monitor setup.   ;D

Scott said "Rotating Monitor" not me, but....  Yeah awesome idea.  :applaud:

Where's the feature creep icon?  We need one.  :laugh2:
  I second that  :laugh2:

Dude, what an awesome idea! I can't wait to see the finished product. :D

All votes in from the peanut gallery.  Awaiting the Signing statement or flat out veto.

And when the barrel is on it's side 45 degree for two player fight mode you can add a marquee stand on the back of the cabinet that is made out of Donkey Kong level like girders and ladders.  The blue ladders would be the support for the marquee box and the marquee box it seld would be surrounded by the red and purplish girders.  That would look hawt!!!

When you mentioned tilting it for 2 player action, it reminded me of the angled racks sometimes used for dispensing beer and ale.

And I pictured it angled like a lowboy instead of a cocktail.

Definitely cool.

The "girders and ladders" could also support a 2 player CP.

If only he had a way to powder coat them with those beautiful colors. . .  >:D

And we have this

The challenge here is to make the smallest possible comfortable size for two CPs and a 17" screen. Clearance above the sticks and buttons needs to be high enough that the glass can overhang virtually the full CP area. The entire unit is only 25" long.

Also I want this whole unit to lift out of the barrel for maintenance, no screws or nails etc that's why I have the cross braces. This whole structure will house all PCB power wiring amplifier etc. The only thing attached to the inside of the barrel will be a power strip leading to the molex socket.

Sizing up the unit on the barrel, it will drop a total of 8 inches down into the barrel minimizing the overhang as much as possible.

At its smallest diameter the barrel is 22" so everything has to slide down past that point

The cosy control panel

I don't think I could have gotten away with this being an eighth smaller anywhere

I really like this idea.  Be careful when you cut the metal bands, the barrel will start falling apart.

Yeah I'm keeping that in mind, I'm still trying to work out the best way to cut the channels down into the barrel. There's the 'this should work ok' way of doing it but then there's the real world experience when I try and pull it off.

I'm surprised that no-one has realized that what I'm building here is one giant cup/drink holder with a cab inside.  :dizzy:

Since you can't actually put a beverage in said giant cupholder, I'm going to have to disqualify it from any "Cupholder Wailing and Gnashing Of The Teeth Outrage".

You have too many buttons on your cp for donkey kong.  Also.... You are going to want player 1 and player 2 on the same CP if you are using a 60-in-1 or arcade sd cause you need to press both to exit back to menu.

Looking good, nice cuts on that barrel.  I'm concerned about the overhang of the CP compromising the clean lines of the initial design.  Do you have the room to get them flush?  You can always angle the CP to get you a few more cms (inches?).

Yeah straight cuts on curved surfaces are no fun. If this were a keeper then I would obsess more on the lines but as it is this needs to be an exercise in good enough (which is tough for an ocd freak like me)

How do you plan to close up the spaces between the control panel and the barrel?

i've kept the cut pieces, I'll have to make some angled shims from them

Good idea. At first I thought filler, but you still want to keep the drop-in aspect, correct?
