I'm new to Macs, and having trouble wiping a used one I just bought

(1/1)

crashwg:
Got myself a MacBook 1,1 2Ghz Core Duo (should be somewhere around 2006) used on ebay.  I'm trying to start with a blank slate but having trouble.

Here's what I've done.  I made a bootable USB installer of Snow Leopard (it won't support Lion) and loaded it up.  I used Disc Utility and Erase, with "Zero Out Data" as a security option.   I then proceed with the installation, enter all my info, and OSX is up an running.

When I open Terminal

--- Code: ---Last login: Sun Mar 10 10:14:31 on console
daves-macbook:~ mynamewhichisnotdave$

--- End code ---

So, my name is not Dave.  That's the seller's name.  Where is this information stored and how can it still be there after I wipe the HDD?

Drnick:
Check this, I can't think why it would have kept the name though.

and it may be your router that is returning that name :)

Thanks Drnick.  It turned out to be the router.  Unfortunately, I had no idea how to change it easily.  Even after I cleared the DNS on the router, terminal still said the same thing.  So, I formatted the laptop for a third time, then did a factory reset on the router before connecting to it.

Far more work that it probably should have taken but all's well that ends well.

Drnick:
All's well that ends well though :)  My google-fu was strong that day.
