Is the SAPPHIRE HD 5450 1GB DDR3 PCIE HDMI ....
« on: March 02, 2013, 05:12:53 pm »
...... 100% compatible with the CRT Emudriver.

I just want to be sure that the Emudriver will work 100% with this card.

I can get a secondhand 4xxx series, but this Sapphire has 1 GB memory which I prefer.

No, unfortunately in Windows we're stuck with HD 4xxx in order to get full 15 kHz support. Starting from HD 5xxx, ATI cards start doing stupid things like setting a default 4-bit mode when they can't identify the monitor (e.g. arcade monitors) so they are totally unusable. On the other hand in Linux you can use these cards perfectly for arcade tasks.

OK, thanks. Then I will stick to a 4xxxx card.  :)

Edit: just purchased a HD 4650 and HD 4670, both with 1GB memory and passive cooling (nice quiet) for a total of € 40. Not bad.  :)

I wasnt aware of this, so if we use the GroovyArcade live-CD and your USB guide, we cant use even the latest ATI cards and will have access to all low 240x240 and above resolutions on out CRT display?? Even if your running the USB flash stick form a windows based PC?

With GroovyArcade Linux I've succesfully tested ATI cards up to HD 6xxx. When you boot from the USB pendrive it doesn't really care about the operating system that's installed in the hard drive, if that's what you're asking(?)
