We'll let this one run a little longer since there may be some kinks to work out the first time around.
The rules may evolve as we run into issues and get feedback.
It will work similar to the high score competitions, although we will not post all previous winners in the individual competition threads.
Top times will be recorded on the stickied LEADERBOARD thread.

Competition Rules:

- Use any car or transmission option available in the game.

- Fastest total time wins.  Winner picks the next game and track.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- A screenshot or photo of your time displayed on the game screen is required to
enter.  Video is great and would help others learn, but it isn't required.

- Everyone is encouraged to post their times even if faster times have already
been submitted.  It's fun to compete with people of the same skill level even if a
master of driving has already submitted an untouchable time.

- Please make sure your times are from games that take place during the
competition period (no posting your best time from last year, etc.).

- Use of scripts or other non-standard hacks are not allowed.
No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your
controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the
party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.

- If you can beat any of the times from the previous competitions, you can submit
your time in the LEADERBOARD thread stickied at the top of this forum.

- Have fun!

BYOAC Racing Competition #1 will be Sega Indy 500 - Highland Raceway
Competition ends at midnight Pacific Standard Time, Sunday March 16th.

emulator - SEGA Model 2 Emulator by ElSemi (either v.9 or v1.0)
rom - indy500d - Indianapolis 500 (Rev A, Deluxe)
settings - default with the exception of country=USA

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

This track is harder than I thought.   :lol
I hadn't played the game much before this.
Had 15 minutes to play this evening and didn't even make it to the end without running out of time.  :-[
I picked it because I remembered a couple other people really liking it.

Slow down at the windmill!

excellent idea..

you picked one of my favorite sega games, after virtua racing
and sega rally 1 and 2.

please check out my complete faq for all the details and tips
to master the game and courses:
==========================================
http://www.gamefaqs.com/arcade/583588-indianapolis-500/faqs/63738

BIGGEST TIPS:
==============================
USE MANUAL! automatic is slower. period.

the cars always start in the same starting position,
you can draft off them for major speed.

with the rolling start, your first lap should be the fastest
due to drafting. the other two should be about the same.

check out my earlier video (i'll replay the game and
submit a time) for a reference time:
============================================
2 course 2 - highland twin
-----------------------------------
Finishing Times : 2'31.854  by R G
Finishing Position for above : 1st

Fastest Lap : 0'49.157

Average Lap Times to finish : 49-51 seconds
===========================================
overall track 2 - highland - 3 laps, default - normal
----------------------------------------------------------
name time  mt/at place        reference

hope to join in the fun soon.

Thanks -1

That will give me something to study while I'm tied to my desk at work tomorrow.

I had about a half hour this evening and have progressed to the point that I actually finish the race now.  ;D
Had some good laps, but haven't put the good laps together in one game yet.

The game originally had a up/down shifter (it's a 6 speed).
Paddle shifters work great for it.  ;)

Ive made some changes to the cab since I last posted an update on it. The up/down shifter isn't there anymore, and my 4way shifter has 2 broken cherries and I cant find replacements :(

I hope the picture isnt upside down, I hate windows 8

Why not just assign two of the buttons on the wheel to shift up and down?

Practice it on easy mode, and learn the turns.
The enemy AI is rough, but predictable.

You should be able to make it through all the checkpoints,
and finish the race if you don't crash.

Watch the replays, and read the FAQ at gamefaqs (linked above)
for more information.

good luck.

I think I'll have a bit of free time to try and get some better laps now. Next time I get on it though I think I might unplug the power to my ffb to see if it'll shave some milliseconds off  :duckhunt. Then if one of those drunken ai drivers nudges me it won't have much effect on me.

Nothing in the rules about needing ffb to participate.

I've thought about putting an asterisk next the name of winners who use a keyboard.
Not sure if it's an advantage, but you can go from left to right a lot quicker with a keyboard than with a steering wheel.
A lot of the videos on youtube look like the people are using keyboards.  The front wheels of the car twitch like keys are being tapped.
I want as many people as possible participating though.   We'll see how it goes......

Welcome aboard Nuexzz!
No need to wait for your favorite games.
Part of the reason for these competitions is to get people playing different games.

so Im assuming that if keyboards are ok, so are controllers (xbox360 and the like?)

For now, I'm going with the philosophy "The more people participating the better".
I'd prefer people state that they're using something other than a wheel.
Probably should add that to the rules.

If four or five rounds go by and the winners always using something other than a wheel,
then we'll have to re-evaluate it as a possible unfair advantage.

Input from the community is welcome.

ok, went back and played some more,
haven't improved my times..

but since the deluxe is 4-5mph slower than
the twin version, i don't think much of an
improvement will be really made, not sure.

also, since the ai is much easier on the
deluxe, you will find yourself in first place
sooner, so that means you won't have
as many cars to draft against in the last
lap.

all of these factors add up.

when i wrote the faq, i had taken a 16 year break,
before going back and playing the game intensely for
a few weeks straight.

there's a shorter tips list here:

Can't catch you guys, but I am improving.
It's crazy how much faster the car goes when drafting, but I end up wrecking when trying to draft as much as possible.

Congratulations to Negative1 with a winning time of 2min:34.109 sec!

I'll get it posted up on the leaderboard later tonight.

YOU GET TO PICK THE NEXT GAME AND TRACK!
Just reply here with your pic and I'll make the next competition thread.

Anyone have any feedback regarding changes to be made for the next round?
I'd planned to reduce the time frame to two weeks, but now I'm thinking about sticking with three weeks.

  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
cool,

well that was fun.

i played some more, but am having some trouble with my
controller, so i couldn't improve on it.

i'm leaning towards virtua racing, track 3 (expert), acropolis.

this is the game, that got me back into arcade racing.
i pumped so much money ($1) at a time into this,
and we used to play 8 player races at dave and busters arcade.

also, another place had tournaments for money, which i would
play and win quite a few for awhile. and that was on the long
15-20 lap races.

i'll post a screenshot of the settings.

is it ok to put up a MAME game, or do you guys prefer to
stick with the M2 emulator games. (i have sega rally as
a backup game, in case).
