issue is you need to get pretty hands on if you are trying to gauge it, bearing is the way to go.

Don't make me pull out my Dogbert gif. ;)

Okay, okay. I'll upgrade my bearing.

Yeah, I wrecked a couple of bartops before I figured that out.   :banghead:

Or, you could just exercise more control over the piece you're routing. There's no reason you can't use the table if you're cautious.

 :dunno

That's great in theory, not so much in practice.  With the bearing swap, I can slot cut a whole bartop kit in about 5 minutes.  When I've got 8 bartop kits to slot, pack, and ship, reducing the slot cutting time is huge.

I do, but that is inadequate for limiting depth of cut, especially on curved / angled pieces.

The standard 1/16" slot cutter, out of the box, cuts the slots WAY too deep, like twice as deep as they need to be.

What I ended up doing was purchasing a larger bearing separately, and replacing the stock (smaller) bearing on the cutter.  That way the depth of cut is always mechanically limited by the slot cutter itself.

Because I wanted to route a kit this evening and couldn't get hold of a bearing that quick I ended up cutting an acrylic "press on"  adapter ring for the bearing on my cnc router. That worked!

Also been looking into 12mm laminated particle board instead of blank MDF, but that's pretty expensive over here because it's not commonly used.
The kit I just finished is in mdf that has a white ground coat on it (no idea what it's called in English). At least that's s lot better than the normal blank version.

Lol  :laugh2: no no no no no ....... that's in Sweden  :hissy:

15 and 18mm in plain white or (black) woodgrain are quite common, but 12mm plain black isn't. Available in HPL instead of melamine mostly and that's triple the price of the pre coated MDF

Edit: here's a crappy phone pic of the pre grounded mdf (can someone please tell me what it's called in english? ) kit before routing the T-molding

Edit 2: Some beter pics

@HaRuMaN: maybe this is interesting for you (or maybe not  :dunno)

Because I don't like marquees mounted with angled profiles (looks too plump) I came up with the following mounting method for the marquee on kits with T-Molding:

If someone wants a kit without T-Molding I still use the method I also used for Evo XR Cade:

This method can't be used with T-molding because the t-molding slot would run into the top slot for the marquee, cutting of the edge. This could be prevented by mounting the marquee deeper into the cabinet, but think that would look awkward.

Now, hold on just a second. I may not have a lot of 'original' ideas, but I'd like to claim at least this one for my own.

To whit:

Each of my bartop designs have integrated 1/4" slots carved into them to support easy installation of plexi for playfield glass and marquees.

No harm, no foul here though. Even macattack heisted my idea.

Am i missing something but dont you need 2 pieces of plexi for a marque, you have to sandwich the graphic, right.

The t-molding method sounds promising, the only issue i forsee, is t-molding does not like to pulled in and out of its slot.  Eventually with maintenance over time if you have to remove your marquee, that slot won't be as tight.

Think it depends on how far you spanning and the material thickness that was used, if you only spanning a couple of inches and the material is 1/2" or 3/4" then it usually offers enough support to hold it in place. That said sandwiches are nice ;)

MDF isn't good in torsion... and you've gone and removed about 50% of the torsion strength it did have...  ;)

I'm talking about the monitor mount, not the cabinet.  And you'll be hanging a fairly substantial weight on it.  At an angle.

I agree, but for this application, given the weight it should be fine.

The 27" monitor in my Doom cab is on a similar mount, and weighs significantly more than the 19" monitors I'll be using. I have NO concerns about the mounts.

Oh, plywood has a better torsional strength, for sure, given it's layered structure.

Because I don't like marquees mounted with angled profiles (looks too plump) I came up with the following mounting method for the marquee on kits with T-Molding. This method can't be used with T-molding because the t-molding slot would run into the top slot for the marquee, cutting of the edge. This could be prevented by mounting the marquee deeper into the cabinet, but think that would look awkward.

;)

Feel free to claim as you like  ;) and I hate to spoil your party, but in what matter does this:

look like your slots in the sidepanels?  :dunno

If you are referring to the other picture instead: I'd hate to spoil that party as well since I've used that method on my Evo XR Cade a few months back as well, and it's also commonly used for placing modular wall panels <- that's where my inspiration came from.

But as mentioned: hate to spoil the party so

Am i missing something but dont you need 2 pieces of plexi for a marque, you have to sandwich the graphic, right.

The t-molding method sounds promising, the only issue i forsee, is t-molding does not like to pulled in and out of its slot.  Eventually with maintenance over time if you have to remove your marquee, that slot won't be as tight.
Why would you need 2 panels? This is only needed if you use a print on normal paper for the marquee, but since there are a lot of signing companies out there which can simply print the artwork mirrored on clearview vinyl and laminate it with white after that so you get a "sticker" that you can adhese on the back of the plexi I see no need for that.

Pulling out the t-molding won't really be nescesary (that often) if you use LED strip for the lighting.

Does noöne have an answer to my question about what the pre-ground coated MDF is called in English.

Also I'm curious what a standard 1/2" plain black laminated particle board panel costs in the US? (e.g. 8x4 or 10x5 ft). Just to compare against the local prices

pre primed mdf.
1/2" is around $35 for a 4x8 sheet.

Whish we had it at that price would be a lot better than pre primed MDF (Thanks!  :notworthy:) at $ 40 for s 8x4 sheet

$ 35,- for a 4x8 sheet of 1/2" laminated particle board? Whish we had it at that price would be a lot better than pre primed MDF (Thanks!  :notworthy:) at $ 40 for s 8x4 sheet

I'm with you. It's $52 at our Home Depot for 5/8" melamine sheets, vs. $33 for MDF here in Canada.

Well, since Haruman isn't here to blow his own horn, here's a link to some "positive press" he's received on Reddit. Well done, my friend.

No problem. Some of us dabble in Reddit. Others of us live there.

Yeah, I'm pretty new to the whole reddit thing.

Don't worry about it. Next week, I'll show you how it works.

If you made a cabinet out of bacon, they would probably throw money at their screens.

And I say they as in we. Myself included.
