Problems with WinXp 64bit and latest Groovymame
« on: February 10, 2013, 12:39:09 pm »
Decided to try out the Windows version, because of the cool looking Fe:s available :) Unfortunately, I cannot get Groovy to work at all. Here's what I've done sofar:

-Installed WinXp 64bit and latest updates (sp2 etc)
-Installed crt_emudriver 6.5 (also tried the newer one, but the results are the same)
-installed soft-15 and enabled 15khz, 25khz and 31khz
-created a new folder, put groovymme there, ran groovymame -cc and then groovymame

Log below, what's wrong with my (nonexisting modelines)

Well, from a lot of what I've read (and I think even Calamity himself can back me up on this), you need to switch your video option from d3d to ddraw.  But this is only part of the situation.  Can you provide some info as to what hardware you're running (especially the graphics card)?

Without knowing at least what your graphics card is, it's not very easy to determine what is wrong.
It doesn't matter how bad things are, it'll work out in the end.

Sorry, totally forgot to post that info: I have a X600 pci-e card

There we go, now we're getting somewhere.  Any other pertinent information: such as the kind of monitor you are using, VMMaker.ini and mame.ini settings for your monitor specs?  Your card is more than compatible for running 2D stuff in mame easily.  While Calamity may be of much greater help, I can at least try to get some basic detective-work for you if I can get just a little more component info.

Thanks for the reply :) I'm kinda lost with the Windows, I was testing GA (Linux) earlier and got it working pretty good, but decided to test how the Windows version would play along (installed to another spare drive).

From an earlier post from Calamity I understood that the steps I've done should be enough to get the Groovymame running, but I guess I've overlooked something.

As I stated earlier I'm using  tri-mode Makvision/Wei-ya m3129 and I've set the mame.ini accordingly (m3129 as the monitor type). The thing I don't yet understand is the purpose of the soft_15khz/vmmaker. I've enabled 15khz/25Khz/31Khz/User modes with soft15khz (Calamity has posted earlier that soft15khz is easier for a novice), but I really don't know how to check if those modes are really available in the system?

One thing that also bothers me is the fact that I cannot change the color depth for Windows. Resoluition is 640 x 480 and color is "stuck" at 8bit. If I try to change the color depth to something als I get a BSOD :( I presume this is not normal?

I'll try to use the ddraw option when I get back home.

Installing soft 15khz and crt emudriver might be the problem. I'd go with crt emudriver ,set vmm to your specifications and go.

You have a bad installation of the drivers. Try uninstalling ATI drivers from control panel. Then starting in safe mode run Cat Uninstaller (http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1275) to remove all ATI related software.

Then install CRT_Emudriver again.

When things work you get a lot of low res modes after rebooting, all are 32-bit selectable.

Installing Soft-15kHz won't help because the problem is with the drivers.

You may have better luck with version 9.3, your card is supported too, I'd just use 6.5/64-bits for really old ATI cards where 9.3 is not a possibility.
Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

Thanks Calamity for your endless support here :) Unfortunately nothing seems to help. No matter how I uninstall/inmstall the drivers I won't get the low-res modes and changing the desktop colour depth always ends up with BSOD. Btw, I noticed the card is actually a X600SE according the the hardware info in Windows. I really don't know what the problem might be, other than this Windoze seems to be a happy chap. I try to get me another compatible Ati tomorrow (there's a second hand computer junk shop in town).

Yeah, sorry: Both driver versions absolutely don't work for some reason. I also tred to install both version via "Add new hardware" - Have disk etc. The number of available resolutions do change, but they only begin from 640 x 480 and the BSOD problem is always there.

Any other card mounted on the same board? I think I saw \\.\DISPLAY2 in your log?

No, I have disabled the integrated video in bios and there's only Radeon X600 Series and Radeon X600 Series (secondary) in the Device manager. I don't know if the secondary one is normal, but I remember seeing a similar device name somewhere in the soft15khz screenshots, so I've thought it's ok.

*edit*
Could it be the dvi-vga -adapter I'm using (card only has dvi and s-video)? Can it cause somekind of mixup between the number if displays?

I can't find an X600SE listed on Wikipedia.  It seems fairly rare.  Is it possible that the drivers need to be updated to include that card?

It's a Dell OEM. My card is exactly like this one:

If the drivers accept to get installed, then they should work. The problem is some 'distributions' of Windows ship newer versions of the drivers that silently override ours, and its a nightmare to get rid of those. One possibility is to use your card's original drivers, and then use vmmaker over it, totalmodes=60, anycatalyst=1

It could be that my Ati is starting to act up... The picture got some weird purple hue after the computer had been on for a while. Tested the m3129 with TG16 and Amiga 1200 and no purple whatsoever... So, I'll try to get me some other Ati tomorrow to test. If this was a hw fault after all, it's kinda hilarious (not!)  :banghead:

Ok, got a X300, but the result is exactly the same. BSOD and only 8bit colours. @Clamity: when you said about certain distributions of Xp64, did you mean some specific version that's problematic? I have a legitimate "college" version, but I just wondered if I shoud have installed the SP2 or not? Havent' tested the Vmmaker option yet.

That sounds like either a hardware problem with your mother board, possibly bad capacitors?  Or possibly a problem with your PC power supply.

What is the make/model of your motherboard and power supply?

Does your motherboard have the latest BIOS?

Are you overclocking your CPU or memory?

Have you tried running memtest86+ to make sure you don't have any memory issues?....  http://www.memtest.org/  (use the bootable ISO version)

Have you tried other non-ATI video cards?

I'm running a college version of XP 64-bit with SP2 slipstreamed in.  I don't have any problems with my setup.

It could be a damaged PCIe port too. The obvious test is installing standard Catalyst drivers.

Ok, tried with standard Catalyst--- bsod. Ran memtest -- all ok. The weird thing is that I got the emulation working very well with Linux... This makes me think it's not a hw problem. Unfortunately I haven't got any other spare pcie diaplay adapters atm. Anyway, here's the info:

-Dell OPtiplex 745 Intel Q965 (yeah, I know got it free...)
-Chieftec 500w psu
-latest bios
-no overclock
-memtest ok
-Linux ok

I'll do a fresh install of WinXp64 during the weekend. I suspect te Intel chipset drivers that I installed (the latest provided by Dell).

You might want to try going to the Intel website and running the driver update scan...

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/

I'd install whatever it tells you.

Ok, time to give a little update on this matter...

I got the new mobo (Asrock) and a passive 4350. Guess what, I still can't install the drivers, exceptions/BSOD:s you name it. I also tried to install the latest Catalyst and set the vmmaker options to anycatalyst=1 numberofmodes=60, but GM still gives me exceptions.  I guess it's this particular Windows install somehow that's giving me the hard time here. I've given up on the Windows front, I guess I'll wait for the next Linux livecd and install that on the hdd. I haven't done a re-install for the Windows (at least not yet).

One interesting thing is that no matter what Catalyst version/ati model (tried with X300/X600SE/4350)  I use, I always got 2 display adapters in the Device manager. Usually the other is the "correct" Radeon, but the other is Standard vga adapter. Also sometimes the Standard vga graphics tells me "Devce cannot start error 10".

I don't have any other display adapter and the integrated is disables in the bios. As I said earlier everything works very  good on Linux (and after basically changing everything on the hw side), I'd say it's Windows related.

I just thought I'll let you guys know about this. I'm really disappointed/baffled here  :banghead:

This is definitely strange and you should focus on that. Most older ATI cards are recognized as two separate devices, and during the driver installation process they're recognized as independent devices and you can see how driver files are copied twice.

You can't expect to get this working unless after installing drivers your Device Manager dialog doesn't show every video related device properly identified and working, and in 'dxdiag' you have both DirectDraw and D3D hardware acceleration enabled.

Sometimes you even need to manually uninstall the built-in drivers by right clicking on the device, etc. and restarting in safe mode in order to install drivers to avoid Windows restoring them on startup. I believe I have described the process several times in other threads.

To summarize, I'm 99% sure that if I had that machine here I would manage to get the drivers working, but it's definitely true that the process can get very tricky in some cases. Sorry for this.

Thanks Calamity once again. Yes, I noticed the files are copied twice, so at least the installer is trying to do it right ;) Here's the procedure I've tried:

1. Control Panel - Add remove programs - remove Ati catalyst
2. Restart and go into Safe mode - run the Catalyst remove program
3. Restart into safe mode and run the installer/Restart into Windows and run the installer
4. Drivers are intalled twice
5. Windows only offers 8bit colout and I cannot even accept the ok for the already used resolution -> always BSOD.

Been tinkering with windows from 3.1 and this has been by far the trickiest driver related issue ever. Still I'm extremely grateful to you Calamity fo your support and running this project  :notworthy: I'll get my perfectly working cab someday - somehow :D

Haven't actually removed the drivers from the Device manager, I'll give that option a go later today.
