IMHO, and I'm still somewhat a newb, but I did experiment quite a bit on CPs....

You can fit a full 4x2 row 2 player controls minus trackball on about a 24-26" panel.

It will still feel a *bit* cramped for two full sized Adults.

with Trackball, and giving it a bit of spacing, I'd say something like 32-34"  would probably be ideal.

The 4x2 2 player layout will fit easily on a 23" wide panel. My dedicated 25" monitor Neo Geo only has like a 23" or 24" wide panel (it is actually narrower than some of my classic era games) and I have never really felt cramped playing 2 player on it.

Going too wide is way more common than going too narrow. Konami's 4 player cabinets were only 37" wide and Gauntlet (4 player) is less than 30" wide.

Having seen  your posts, I defer to your greater experience.

When I built the Redline for my sister's kids, I experimented quite a bit, and wound up with a an external width of 25 1/2 inches, which once you counted space lost under the CP due to bracing worked out to 24". internally.

The CP worked well for the kids, but if I were building for myself I'd probably go something like 28" wide. (I'm 6'6 and pushing 300 lbs)

My .02.....
