anyone know how to recreate the Stern pebble finish or similar?
« on: January 12, 2013, 12:38:30 pm »
I have had many stern cabinets, and many converted cabinets over the years.  many of them had a finish applied over them that reminds of the stern cabinet, kind of a thick pebble finish to hide flaws, damage, etc.  Does anyone know if there is a current product or procedure to recreate this finish?

Rustoleum and Kilz brands hammered finish paints exist.  I use finished laminates.

hammered paint is not the same effect, it is almost like there was something mixed in with the paint to give it a textured surface

I did my scramble by mixing in 'texturizing sand' from home depot into a gallon of paint (sold in the paint dept), and rolled away. Simplest paintjob ever.

i tried that sand but it is too fine, the stern cabinets and the conversions from the 80's had a different texture, thicker.

sterns dmd /speaker panels still have this type of finish. Its kinda like there is bits of paint flung onto the surface. The closest thing I can reference to it is trunk paint that you used to spray in can form on the inside of your old classic car. If they still do that in black on black it would be pretty close. if not and you had to go for something like black with green you could always spray black over the top of it.

that there is a lot of textured style paint out now in lowes etc that may give you a simiar effect
