Ah...good point!  It's already flying at 512mb believe it or not.  The attract mode is so smooth and when playing I don't experience any choppiness or skipping/stuttering issues with the ball in flight as I would sometimes on the stock tower.  These Optiplex computers are pretty easy to work with when you get used to the bios setup.

ok i have read this thread and 99% of the others.  I am in need of some help.  I have a PGA Champ III and it loads the software.   All my controls work trackball buttons ect.   I load the credits, or on free-play, I am running in to a problem.   The game lets me select my golfer number of players and so forth.  Where the game would normally load the actual course and let you play my game is looping and then starting the game and the ea sports logo again.   Im baffled.   I changed the hard-drive and put in new memory. I can provider pictures of what puter i have.     Video card is a 3dForceMX440-8x   I didn't see a name on the mobo but it is a yellow orangish looking board.  All the functions work in the game except the actual playing of the game.  Im at my wits end this machine is about to take a trip with the fishes in the gulf.

your video card might be the problem.

what do your disks say? (something like "for DFI" or something along those lines.) that should give us an idea what board you have in there and what video cards you can use.

NVidia GEFORCE 4    050-002401 Rev-B
is on the recovery disk

Version 2.2.0.0 is on the actual champ III disks (2 of them)

hi
i was thinking the same thing..
we went over this awhile back
i do believe i asked for rev of the s/w,this is stamped right on the disk's.
u could have good hardware?,but 1 of your disk's could be bad, thus causing it
because the video stuff dose not get loaded until the 3rd disk,or it could be a bad cd-reader,as this will cause it to skip a file or 3 thus causing the cycling
let me chk my pdf's on them puppie's before u make it intoa new fish pond.
my crib note's should point me to it also, and the term is :wdt: watch dog timer
this olny happens on corrupt firmware,if the video card stay's up the full time until
u go to play it then it cycle's,it mean's the courses are not getting loaded.
have u tried it without the player's card reader hooked up ?
if not try it that way.
i will chk my crib note's and get back to u
and yes i read your pm
congrad's dad

yes, where did that videocard come from?

it's a geforce 4MX card, but i have never seen one like that either. it could be different enough to not work with the driver they have injected into the system. all the cards Ive seen have never had the HD connector (black round one)

i thought stpcore had done a list of hardware to sw for use
the 1's i have seen :3:,do not have that port
on your s/w disks in hercules is a folder called nivida
it will spec the type used
u can slave your curnet drive and read it that way if u want
or u can just pop it into a reader and go through it
use the rescuse didk but DO NOT ALLOW YOUR CD TO BOOT FROM THE CD PLAYER
ie ATUO=OFF,this way u can read the rescue disk

ok fair enough :)
place your resuce disk in your home putter
DO NOT ALLOW AUTOBOOT
once it is in and the player thing come's back at u >colse it<
go to windows explorer
and find the drive in which the cd is contained. rember this is you home putter
open the disk
ie right click so u can see the dir tree <files>
next come to hercules,it is a file folder
in there find nivida
in nivida find the info file, this u can open in note pad and or wordpad
in the .inf=info file u will find the card type's supported and there names
ie 4200/4800 etc
these were the driver's loaded and supported by that game's os
from there u can tell which video card  is to be in there
that is a walk through.
it is hard
post me the video card make and i will see if the support is there

I think we should try to keep this thread as clean and clear as possible.  We should be posting working updates or mods without posting theories on what may work as that's what got confusing in the original thread.  If you have something new to offer please post a step by step tutorial so that others can follow.  Simplicity is what we are looking for here so please keep any tutorials as basic as possible.  Anything contributed is appreciated!

For those of you that may be starting to research your PGA golf game there is currently nothing posted on these forums (this thread or Ed's) that shares a working alternative for the game dongle.  You will need the dongle to play your game regardless of the version you have.

I went out today and picked up the 29" Vizio Razor LED to put inside one of my PGA Tour Golf cabs and I have to say it's a huge upgrade from the 27" CRT that went bad.  That thing fits in there like a glove and fills the cabinet space nicely.  I haven't made a bezel for it yet but I put it in there with some supports to give you an idea as to what to expect.  It's nice to be able to go 29" versus the normal 26" LCD that the Golden Tee cabinets are restricted to.  The ultra thin bezel on the Vizio Razor makes it possible to put a 29" LCD in there!

I will post some finished pics after I make the bezel and print some artwork to go on the bezel as well!

The most common and most affordable swap (plug and play) is the TI4200.  I like to get the 128mb versus the 64mb card.

I have no experience with the 4800.  I do agree that you want a card with a fan however.  In addition, I would recommend keeping the side panel off of your tower at all times.  These things run hot.  I've switched some of mine into Dell Optiplex (GX260 and GX280) computers and have not had overheating issues as of yet.

In addition, if you are running CHALLENGE, TEAM CHALLENGE, or TEAM CHALLENGE w/ ALL ACCESS you can throw a 6600 card in there as it is plug and play with those versions only.  I have a 6600 256mb card running my TEAM CHALLENGE w/ ALL ACCESS and the game flies without any choppiness or skipping in attract mode or during the flight of the ball.

Is anybody in need of parts?   ;D

i will be parting out 2 cabinets. I figured, before I post it in the B/S/T thread, I'll give you guys first crack at it.

Story goes, we have decided to gut out our PGA cabs and convert them to GOLDEN TEE pedestals with 42" tv's. I've convinced the boss to offload the parts since they will probably just sit upstairs in our warehouse for 10 years and then we will throw them out.

SO...

I'll find out more info tomorrow since i'm just doing this at home... but.. basically:

I have 2 questionable computers, (with dongles and software...i believe one is team challenge and the other challenge 3 (i'll double check)) i can strip out parts or whatever. if you want just the dongle and software thats fine too...i'll toss the rest.

2 control panel overlays, 2 harnesses etc. I have one LED marquee board and power supply. (no housing)

stpcore, i believe at one time you were looking for a card reader? i have one. (the other is still in a machine i forgot to remove it  :lol ) eventually i'll have 2

post here or send me a pm with your item request and an offer. Items will ship from Alberta Canada (if you want to estimate shipping online), depending on where it's going it may cost a few bucks to get it to you. Unfortunately because this is for the business, I can't offer any kind of free shipping, though we will do it at ACTUAL cost. I'll run the offers past the boss and if he's cool with it i'll let you know.

I do need some card readers, an overlay (if newer style), and wire harnesses for the control panel if possible. I would even buy your ram in the computers and the I/O board that runs the wire harness as well as the graphic cards. I wish you were closer as I would probably buy everything! Just looking for small pieces I can ship to the US without getting crushed with ship charges.

funny thing. I stand corrected regarding my comment about the video card.

it seems one of these systems has one of these cards with the 3 connectors. (vga/dvi/hd connectors.)

not sure what it is... it has a sticker on the fan that says "startek", and has the number "10004773 REV A" on it. quick google says it may be a nvidia Ti4200 series. under some other name of "visiontek" which is likely a startek company.

I'll get around with uploading some pics I took with my potato phone today....my wife decided today was a good day to try and have a baby, so today is all thrown off for me.  :lol
