Denver?
« on: November 19, 2012, 02:28:36 am »
I had a great meetup with some fellow shmuppers on some candy cabs a few weeks ago and just got back from King of Kong II here in Denver.  Who else here loves this hobby in the arcade rich city of Denver?

It was really cool!
I think the guys who put it on are KLOV scene guys.  That being said, two MAME guys won 1st and second.  I know being able to save states has helped me with some of my classic gameplay.

I took a couple of pics:

Walter Day and knucklez are super nice guys.

I was in Denver a week before the Kong Off.  The 1UP and 2UP are great arcades.  Really wish we had something like them around here.

I think I can declare an official BYOAC meetup in Denver has been held now, 2 people counts! ;)

I met up with Sharpfork last night at The 1UP barcade in Denver. My first time in an old school arcade in fifteen years! We talked shop, I learned a lot about the different variety of cabinets, and of course we dropped a lot of quarters. Seeing Space Invaders in the wild, complete with a thumping base and a well maintained cabinet was a treat. I forgot about some of the mechanical aspects of coin up amusement that were still to be found in cabinets of the eighties, like the knocker in QBert when you fell off the pyramid and lost a life).

All the cabs are in pretty good shape at the 1UP, and the controls are well maintained considering the abuse they get. The displays were also in good shape for the most part, and only 1 machine was out of order (Spy Hunter).

For the Galaga/Pac-Man titles, rapid fire/ turbo mode was active, and max lives were given. Awesome settings! I remember it was rare to find a turbo Pac in the arcades growing up, and certainly not set to max lives. Operators weren't making money off beer like at the 1UP, so no incentive to make the game any easier ;)

Titles I played last night: DK, DKjr, Pac, Ms Pac, Baby Pac, Galaga, Popeye, Qbert, Dig Dug, Satan's Hollow, Off-Road, Pac Battle Royal, BurgerTime, Space Invaders, Joust, and Marble Madness.

There will definitely have to be another meetup in the near future!

I plan on checking out the 1UP and 2UP when I'm down for the Rocky Mountain Pinball Showdown in April. I feel a little guilty not having visited either yet, even though I'm only 100 miles away.

February BYOAC Denver meet up at 1UP?

I feel the need for speed with their super turbo Ms Pac setup.

I'm down for sure.
Exidy who has alot to do with the games at the 1up and 2up chimed into the Shmups forum Denver meetup discussion.  Maybe we could cross the streams a bit and see if klov, Shmups, and byoac folks would want to meetup on an afternoon and maybe Exity could talk shop a bit.  That might be a post Feb meetup kind of thing.  Maybe April for the pinball show...

That would be great to get a good cross-board meetup going. I'm actually in the process of buying a MVS cart & pcb from Exidy over at Shmups. Small world, he messaged me about the items I was looking for, and from a link in his sig I realized he was a tech at 1up. What day of the week works best for you guys, a Sunday, weeknight, etc. ? I'm pretty flexible since I work from home. This week is shot though, but any other week this month I'm open.

It is pretty messy down here in the Ranch with the wind, so I have to skip out on today. My schedule is wide open though the next couple weekends to try again.

Sounds good, I checked with my offline scheduler, and it doesn't look like she has anything planned for the next couple weekends.

We've got about 7" down here in the Ranch. I'm not shoveling anything until it stops... not like on of my neighbors who has already shoveled three times. Ain't nobody got time for that!

Lol I would be ok with that but my games suck.  My mame is a crappy machine I got off Craig's list. It works fine for me but needs lots of help! Runs just fine but looks like ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.   And my golden tee fore /tekken 3 is not bad.  But I would be too embarrassed to show them to people who know what arcades are support to look like. :-(

I'm always up for beer in any form :)

What I really needed this morning was a wifi enabled snow blower and a Jamma harness.

I know I am planning hitting up RMPS on the Saturday session. Just trying to convince the wife to go.

The stack of quarters on my desk is growing larger...

I am booked this weekend thanks to my cruise director. I think I could do next weekend.... I don't think I will be too drunk that weekend.

You guys going to the Rocky Mountain Pinball Showdown?

I've thought about it that last couple of years but have never attended.  Maybe this would be a good thing to do a meetup for.  That way Furry131 doesn't have to talk his wife into going :D.

How does the 16th or 17th of this month look for a 1up meetup?  The 17th is St. Patrick's Day if that means anything.  I personally prefer earlier in the day because it is much less busy.

Just realized the St. Pattys Day parade is tomorrow from 10-2pm, and the route goes down Blake, right in front of the 1up. Can we move the time to 2:30? It might be rainy tomorrow, but the parade usually has a big turnout and that end of downtown will have be packed.

We haven't done a 2meetUP yet but I've been there a bunch of times.  They are close enough that we could easily hit both locations in an afternoon.

I'm down for a meetup sometime this month.
I'm good the 20th, 27th, or 28th in the afternoon/ evening.  how about y'all?

You guys going to the Rocky Mountain Pinball Showdown?

I totally forgot about this.  I think the 1/2meetUP should work with forlks headed to the Pinball showdown.  Or even better, we should do a RMPS meetup AND a 1/2up deal.

Sunday is the easiest for me to make; but, I could rearragne a few things on my schedule and make later Saturday.

Is anyone in additon to Nephasth comitted (or very interested) to going to the RMPS?

I am going to the RMPS... not sure what date or time yet!  I think Saturday or Sunday would work for me.... I would probably do both places. I think we should work around Nephasth's schedule since he will only be down a few days.

Not sure what time I'll be leaving town that Saturday to head back. I'll be bringing a KLOVer from Casper down with me, and I'm not sure what his travel plans are for heading back home, which is another 180 miles after getting back to Cheyenne. But I'm more than flexible during the days I'll be there.

On a side note... Looking forward to playing WOZ. :)

So I guess the main focus is the RMPS for the shorter term.  I'm still open to trying to add a 1/2up deal but that is secondary at this point.

It sounds like we are going to meet up on Sunday.  How early can you guys make it?  It opens at 9.

Nephasth- what is your schedule man!?

A total aside...
The Space Invaders: In Search of Lost Time is a documentary I just stumbled across.  I guess there are a few collectors from the Denver area in it:

Planning on arriving around noon on Friday. Staying at the Tech Center Friday night. It's looking like my friend from Casper will be driving himself, so I'll probably leave late Saturday night. As far as when I'll be where specifically,  no idea. Playing it by ear.

This is where I think things stand.

There are two events with days/times:
- the RMPS is Friday-Sunday.
- There has been a 1up time defined by Nephasth as a Friday lunch.

Nephasth- 1UP Friday for lunch, RMPS Friday and Saturday.
34k - "at RMPS throughout the weekend"
Sharpfork - I can't make the Friday 1UP lunch but am planning on hitting the RMPS early on Sunday.  I will look for 34k.  If anyone else is going to make it, I'm happy to share cell # so we can meet up.  I'll have a red KADE shirt on BTW.
Furry131- "I think i could make it sunday"  are you headed down?

I can make the RMPS Sunday, around 11-12pm. I don't have anything in the afternoon so I'm free to hang until around 4-5.

It was a fun show, I played more pinball then I have in my entire life. The classic video game room was small, but there was a nice selection of cabs: Robotron, DK/DK II, Stargate, Tron, Mappy, Centipede, Millipede, Qbert, Asteroids, Ms Pac cabaret, Space Invaders, Big Buck Hunter, and two MAME cab setups.

I booked out 1-3 this sunday, the 30th.  I'll check with the keeper of the master house schedule to make sure this works.

Anyone have a good way to get ahold of Exidy to see if there is shmupp at 1 oe 2up?

Beware the ghost pepper burger!!

I did have my best ever game of Pac-Man though on a speed hack board set with maximum lives: 504,320  :woot

Played my first round of Tapper, made it to the second screen of Satan's Hollow finally, and discovered 2 player Joust is much more fun than 1 player Joust!

Good times dropping quarters and discussing projects.

Kong Off was awesome! More DK machines then I have ever seen before in one place. The final scores are in and it was a really competitive event, with 9 out of the top 10 spots over 1 million points.

The event is in the same tech center location it was held last year, the Sheraton I believe. I'd like to at least on Saturday, maybe for a bit on Sunday as well.

Saturday is a bit of a madhouse. I was thinking about just going on Sunday. It is a shorter day, but it was so much quieter that I played everything I wanted to play multiple times.

I will be going for sure though.

Hello fellow Colorado arcade enthusiasts and vidiots alike!
I used to live in Boulder and Longmont (still have property there) and since 2008, I now head up the SW region, in Pagosa Springs. I've been into emulation since about 2005 when I first modded my original Xbox.

A little over a year ago, I started my first cabinet build. I wouldn't really call it finished - are they ever fully finished?! I'm still always tweaking things just like most around here. And, yes, it's completely addictive. I've already begun plans for a vertical screen classic system, and horizontal screen classic system. That's assuming my wife doesn't leave me first.

Anyway, I'm kinda hummed I don't live in the Denver area anymore, at least for the arcade aspect. Hooking up with some fellow gamers would be amazing. Down here, the rancher cowboy folks don't really understand this addiction.
So, in short it's good to see there are others like me somewhat close by. I go to Denver on occasion and would love to meet up over beers and classic coin ops.
I'll keep an eye on this thread and, great to meet you all!!

Markus
PS...I know it's late in the season this year but if anyone wants to come down to Wolf Creek for some skiing/snowboarding, you have a friend - my house is 18 miles from the "most snow in Colorado."  :D

Though, I did drive by the Pinball Arcade in Lyons (wasn't open, too early :hissy:)   http://www.lyonspinball.com/

Have any of you guys been up to Lyons to check it out??

I've had a ton of fun at Shmup and KLOV meetups at folks houses.  Maybe it is time to think about something like that for folks here.
