Xenolix Bartop -Build Update-
« on: November 07, 2012, 05:01:04 am »
My Xenolix bartop design is about to take form.  I have been testing a custom build of Mame 147u1 on XP32 bit with mainly golden age games 1979 - 1983 (plus a few other newer games). It will be built using parts I already have at hand including:

- Motherboard from Acer 250 TravelMate laptop (Pentium 4)
- Dell 17" LCD Monitor
- Acer 7.1 Amp PS
- JLW Joystick - (modded for silent running)
- Sanwa buttons
- Small USB powered speakers

Construction materials will be 6mm MDF and plastic

These concept renders are a re-work of the original design I did for Pinball Wizard featuring the monitor in vertical config.  Cutting plans are complete; the only difference is the base will be a little deeper to allow for the JLW to squeeze into the space available.  The front edge of the bartop will be illuminated as shownm as well as the Xenolix logo on the marquee.

I wanted to be sure Mame 147 would run with the games I wanted before committing to the build.  With monitor resolution set to 800 x 600, d3d prescaling set to 2 plus a shadow mask filter selected I'm getting 99% running speed on most games which is fine.  FE will be a custom Xenolix themed Mala layout.  Finish will be high gloss sky blue, brushed look silver and textured grey bezel.  Stay tuned for more.

Ond

Well, I have to say that is one sexy concept you have there! I'm not normally a fan of bar-tops, but damn this one makes me reconsider!

Can't wait to see your progress as you get to work on Zenolix.

Great looking design. I also happen to like anything that ends in 'lix' and has sharp angles.

Thanks for the comments and interest in this project guys, I just wanted to respond to some specific remarks and questions:

make me one plz. will pay :hissy:

I know youíre keen on this design SNAAKE and if I had enough parts available Iíd consider making others, but parts (mainly the monitors in this size) arenít readily available.  Iíve just customised this design to what I had at hand.   This cab will be for my son more or less for Christmas.  Never say never though, different boards could go into it and I may source some cheap 2nd hand LCDs.  Let me get this done and weíll see.  Might be a bit $$$ though  :) .

This won't divert attention away from the Astro cab will it?

The Astro cab has priority; Iíll be working on it regularly over the next few weeks, mainly paint finish and remaining chrome pieces while I wait for the glass.

6 button vertical games?   ???

Donít dwell too much on the button config, it was just copied over from the previous design when it still had a horizontal monitor and I was considering some fighting games.  The final built button layout will reflect the range of games playable.

6 button vertical games?   ???

Maybe Ond is a big Daioh fan?

-Andrew

I love that game!  Cyvern is another fav in the vertical scrolling shooters, both will be on Zenolix.

Very cool!! Hit me up if you want some bits of acrylic or some LASER cutting done. You're close enough that I can ship to you... ;D

Thanks mate; you did some very fine work on your version of this design.  I may just take you up on that offer, maybe to cut the logo for the back and or the marquee logo also? Can you cut from a DXF or DWG file?

:o who's got two thumbs and is all excited for this build??? THIS GUY!

You going to finish Retro-future first  ???

I know itís one more egg in the air to juggle but I may be able to complete this in 2012, getting Astro done before the end of the year is unlikely, not because Iíll be spending time on this but because of the long turnaround times on the remaining chrome pieces.  Now that mechanical issues with Astro are overcome Iím keen to finish it off, Iíll be painting and sanding and  :blah:  :blah: this weekend!

The LASER itself runs on DXF but I run everything through Corel X6 so I can convert just about any file format.

I kicked off the build for this today.  It sure was a beautiful day in Melbourne today, my wife even joined me in the garage, perched up on my workshop chair, drink in hand she happily watched me measuring, cutting, mumbling, measuring, cutting, mumbling.....

The side panels are just all angles so, how to cut them out with no CNC in sight?  Here's what I did.

Print off the side panel actual size 1:1 scale from Visio diagram and stick it onto a sheet of 6mm MDF.

Then cut to length some pieces of hardwood and nail them down to form a frame exactly within the plan lines.

Flush trim the edges of this cutting template.

Clamp down 6mm MDF sheet over the cutting template, trim with a jigsaw and then route around with flush trim bit again.

Here's the result, two nice side panels as per the plan dimensions.

I've also cut out the bottom and rear panels and have begun gluing all together.  The bottom panel will be detachable to allow access to the cab.  Next post, I'll cover the shell assembly of this cab.

Hell! Time after time you just seem to create these awesome original concepts. I absolutely love this design.
I could even see some of my graphics being placed on a bastardized version of this  ;D
I'll certainly be watching with gusto!
I'm trying to imagine how your going to be able to open it to maintain the internal components.
The only feasible option i could think is your going to create some form of a trap door on the underneath panel?
My art is always free for you to download and modify as you see fit...
Why?... because I could never find any art I loved on the net. So I played around with Photoshop and wish to share it with the arcade community.

Haha even OND's method of creating cut templates makes me feel like an amateur.  Can't wait to see how this build turns out!

(by the way, I feel a whole lot better about my some of my Ryobi tools knowing that OND uses them to create his arcades.)

So once again, we find that evil of the past seeps into the present like salad dressing through cheap wax paper, mixing memory and desire.

Itís fun designing new stuff, even better is seeing it come to life.  Your guess about access to the cab is correct, basically the whole base plate will be removable.  Everything except fans, monitor and speakers will be mounted on the base plate.  It will be a bit of a tight fit but there is room.  Iím using the teeny little speakers that came with the original laptop; theyíll fit nicely either side of the monitor.  They sound OK, no huge sound, but fine for this purpose.

How do feel about taking the rather low res graphic from the render on the CP and doing something with it?  I think your art is pretty damn fine.  If you do want to have a go at it, keep in mind Iím keeping the graphics very simple, not much more than a blue motif on a white background.  This is it full size.

Nice to see you thatpurplestuff!  Heh, my Ryobi router,  Iím not in love with it, but it mostly does just fine, itís not the tool but the toolman that counts? ;D
I'm asking Santa for a new Dremel as the one I've got is nearly dead, my dream router will have to wait.

I got a bit more done today after work before it got too late, Iíll do a better progress post on the weekend.  Here are the side panels just resting on the formed back panel.  The base is just leaning against my shelf.

I think your right on the money with having something bold and clean.

If it was me i'd try to do some stenciling. When i look at the concept model i just see an abundance of angles. Opposed to the rounded motif.
It may work better to bring that angular feel into the control panel?
I'd use the same blue your painting on the side and rear on the CP and bring the grey from the bezel down as well.
here's a raw idea...

I like your thinking, and take the point about angles vs the rounded Motif hmmm, OK,  I think I'll draw something up for a stencil similar to what you've suggested, the only thing I want is clean (no grey gradiant) on the white part of the CP.

Thanks!

Hey there OND,

Great design as usual .  When I first saw your mockup the first cabinet that popped to mind was STERN's BERZERK.  I think if they had your cabinet desiging skill back in the day the BERZERK cabinet would have looked great as your xENOLIx cabinet.  Sorry I took the liberty of lowercasing the Xs.  Looks kinda cool.  Some mentioned stencils and it clicked.  I messed around on illustrator for about 15 minutes and this is what I came up with.  Do what you wish with it, you'll probably come up with something infinately more awesome, but....

If you want to mess around with the illustrator file let me know.

Hey jigenjuke,  I really appreciate this kind of input, there's something I like about these suggestions i.e. lower case xs are cool! The stencil design has elements I like as well, I'll mess about with all the suggestions and try a few things and post up the results here for comments.

I received my Joystick and buttons by courier yesterday from in2amusements.com.au.  For anyone in Australia I can highly recommend these guys for Arcade parts. The service they provide is really good.  I managed to screw up my credit card details, order the parts twice   :banghead: and generally create confusion and mayhem  :lol and after one email these guys sorted everything really quickly.  Delivery from WA to VIC in one day!  I've ordered from them several times, and each and every time - great service.

Anyway I've gone with a JLF stick for this cab, I like the slimmer base plate profile.  I've also gone with the clip style Sanwa buttons.  All very nice kit!  I love the construction of the JLF but hate the click noise on the switches - it's the loudest I've heard on, well anything.  I really like silent joysticks because thatís what I remember playing on back in the day.  I pulled this thing apart and really started to go into radical OND mod mode.  I edged into "nearly hurting my brain territory" with this one.  As some of you know I have previously done a silent running mod for JLW sticks.  JLFs are different beasties.  And then in a flash I had it!  In the coming days I'll post up a mod for this stick to make it silent and super SHMUP responsive.  Also the mod can be reverted back to standard JLF in about 30 seconds (not including wiring connections).  For now its secret OND business  >:D

I have no doubt that whatever you come up with will be super sneaky and awesome.  However if you're not happy with the end result, maybe take a look at the Spark Optical Sensor here: http://godlikecontrols.com/

It's a unit that you swap in place of the microswitches.  Should be nice and quiet.  ;)

in2amusements.com.au I'll have to try them out. I'm just about over supporting local suppliers when it takes a week longer to get something locally, not to mention the extra cost.

I'm still waiting for a spinner I ordered nearly two weeks ago from a local supplier. :banghead:

They do sell silent JLFs.

They also have a mod kit with Zippyy switches and a .187" QD to JLF-style adapter harness or a kit with Cherry switches and a .187" QD to JLF-style adapter harness.

I tried the zippy switches in the JLF and they don't work that well with the round and octagon restrictors.
The restrictor being smaller and sitting closer to the joystick body causes the ledge on the actuator to catch occasionally.
Silent omron switches work, but for what they cost, you could almost buy the basic optical setup.

The plan for my new cab was to use the SparkCE sensor and replace the  adjustment pot with some type of command line controlled variable resistor.  So for shmups, it could be super sensitive and for 4-way games, the sensetivity would be low enough only one switch would be tripped at a time.  I'm not done looking, but the best idea I've come up with so far for a computer controlled resistor is an LED and a photosensor.

Sigh, the more I talk about this idea, the more I want to do it, so I guess I'll go ahead and order the SparkCEs.   ::)
Hope I'm not  :banghead: when I see Ond's solution.

Since I also worked on this a little this weekend (got to keep it moving along while I mainly focus on my Astro cab) I thought I'd post some update pics.  Just some glue up of panels.

It's a fairly fragile light shell at this stage but corner joins will be reinforced with timber edging glued to the inside corners.  It's good to compare these early rough MDF construction shots with future progress pics featuring OND's not so secret surface finishing process.

It's happening indeed  :)

Here's some more of that:
The 17' Dell monitor de-cased

Cutting the bezel out on my router table

Test fit to monitor, tinted glass will of course go between monitor and bezel.

Test fit CP and bezel to cab just with tape to make sure everything is nice and square and flush along joins.

Joystick mounted underneath using countersunk screws (will be filled over for a clean CP surface).  I really like these 'push in' Sanwa buttons, so easy, and they stay put really well.

I'm going to give this cab some really nice surface finishing treatment inside and out.  The inside will be spray painted white with the exterior as per the design render.

Next up I'll construct the Marquee and add mount guides for the monitor.

Unstupid

@ jmike - Thanks Mike, I know you're keen on this little build, you'll start to really see it come together next progress post.

@ selfie - Yeah but we're Aussies mate - thick skinned.  You did a stirling job on your version, it sure got me energized.  Thanks for the offer I appreciate it,  actually I was pondering trying to tackle the stuff that you could do much better.  When I get done with work I'll PM the cad files for the logo to you, see what you think.

Thanks for the comments guys.  It was just a few pieces of shaped MDF but it took all of yesterday to get them done.  The guide on the router table is OK for straight edges but for odd angles I basically had to nail some scrap straight edge MDF to the pieces to run along the Router table guide.  That's why there are nail holes in the pieces.  All blemishes etc. will disappear under the finishing treatment I'll give the cab.  Next up:  The Marquee and 3D logos,  there is some very cool looking laser cut stuff on it's way to me from selfie.

Been a bit ill the last few weeks but much improved this weekend, I got out to the garage and worked a bit on this.  selfie very generously laser cut some fiddly pieces for the marquee logo and rear logo from acrylic and MDF and posted them down to me.  There was no way these were ever going to be hand cut, if not for his offer to help, I would have had to have gotten them laser cut anyway at considerable cost.  Thanks again mate!  ;D  He cut me three versions in semi opaque, white acrylic and MDF.

I spent most of Sunday integrating the MDF panels into the rear of the cab and the marquee, here's how that has progressed so far.

Firstly I constructed a Marquee 'box' from the front sheet selfie sent me (after re-cutting it to shape) and a matching rear panel.  I'm not normally a fan of kerfing to achieve bends in materials but in this case it suited my purpose.

Here you can see the marquee after some Bondo and primer treatment.  In the background is the sheet of white acrylic and logo.  To prevent primer from coating the insides of each cut out I've temporarily filled each with the corresponding shapes.  The laser cut is very fine so no primer wanted in the gaps!

Here is the back of the cab with the rear logo panel integrated in.  After surface treatment there are no joins visible.  I've decided to use the non-opaque white acrylic logo here inset into the cut out.

Here's the marquee just resting in its place on the cab.  I'll use the semi opaque white acrylic inserts here (backlit with a small fluoro tube).
Surface preparation still needs several coats of primer and sanding etc. before I hit it with paint.

Nearly up to the sexy stage!  :P

Have you tried steam bending MDF?  I did it with hardboard and had great results.  On small bends like that the jig would be fairly manageable as well.  Just a thought for next time so you don't have to kerf if you don't want to.

Looking stellar btw

Thanks jmike & Le Chuck,  I have steam bended MDF before for my Astro cab on the curved rear sections of the CP.  I lightly steamed the piece in question here as well just to make the curving go a bit smoother.  Thanks for the thought though  The laser cut lettering and logo will be offset i.e. slightly raised from the cut-outs when finished like in the render for a 3D effect.

Thanks guy's I'll be trying hard to get the best result possible on this cab.  He (selfie) wouldn't like me making a fuss about it, but it's pretty awesome to get help on a project from someone else, where it's either out of your skill range or out of your tool-sets capabilities.  I've done a few things gratis for others, it's humbling to be on the receiving end.

It's a short week for me at work as I'm taking a couple of extra days off before Easter.  Iím looking forward to getting the surface prep done on this so I can start painting it.  For this cab I'm going to use spray paint (rattle can) as usual but I'll be using Modelers paint from a Model builders supplies shop.  I normally like using automotive paints but the color range from the model supplier is huge and the paint quality is very high.   It will hopefully be better suited to some stenciling work on the CP.  I've done very little stenciling, I even have an airbrush but never used it.  I'm more inclined to use the modelers paints which are very fine in spraying.  I do have a question though,  what is the best stenciling masking material?  I'm vaguely aware of adhesive materials for the purpose.  I think Vanilla Gorilla knows about this?

Being able to say I contributed is thanks enough

On the masking material, there is a signwriters vinyl specifically for masking that can be run through a vinyl cutter like a normal cut sticker. Also Application tape, the low tack masking tape, that is used to hold cut vinyl stickers together works well as a mask provided you use a very sharp knife to cut it.

Ah ha, signwriters vinyl, thanks selfie I'll follow up on it.

Here's a look at the marquee after some more priming and sanding, I'm trying to preserve the integrity of the laser cuts, so far so good.

I'm on leave now SO tomorrow I'm going to go and paint colour match the Sanwa blue, if I can't find it at the Model hobbyist store I'll head up to the auto paints place I normally go to.  That pearl acrylic is going to look the business backlit against that blue!

Hey talkgeek,  thanks for the kind words mate, its a real boost to know my work is getting some interest lately.  I have a kind of a self imposed rule that I (generally) adhere to, and that is 'no post without something to show', well in my project threads anyway.  Damn, another week slips by without much done on this, however, in my usual way I'm always reassessing my build strategy for a better way.  I'm going to re-cut the bezel panel in much thicker MDF (16mm) so that I can rebate the rear of the panel to better mount the monitor with some brackets.  I'm doing this mainly with the long term view that the (2nd hand) monitor is not going to last forever.  If it had to be replaced, I'd like to easily be able to remove the dead monitor despite the tight working space inside the cab.

Other things......, I tried a slimline fluorescent tube in the marquee to back-light the pearl Xenolix logo.  While it was OK, I wasn't loving it.  I'll get some white LED strips instead for a much more even back-light effect.  I like to use whatever I can scrounge in the garage but the fluro tube just wasn't cutting it.

In one trip to various different vendors I acquired all the different paints that will make up the finish.  The sample pot in the pic below is a latex dark grey low sheen.  I'll apply it with a foam roller to the bezel and marquee front,  for a slightly textured finish. The Quick Coat flat white is just for the internal surfaces.  I always think people's cab interiors done in a nice flat white look pro.  I was lucky with matching the CP controls to modelling spray paints, turns out the model supplies shop had exactly the right violet/blue which matches the Sanwa buttons and joystick ball-top.

I agree with the sentiments re amazing quality of work - also agree with OND re it turning out the build process is just as enjoyable (maybe more so) than playing on the finished article with your mates (or seeing a commissioned cab being just for the first time by the customer) - thanks for the amazing inspiration and creative ways you guys share with us on how to approach different challenges in this hobby of ours  :applaud:

This might be a dumb question, but did you cut that bezel using a 45 degree chamfer bit?

That is what I use to do mine, but I swear yours seems sharper and less rounded at the corners. It could also be that my eye are bad  ;D

Wow! This looks insane! Can't wait for the painted pics.
Ond are you going to connect the side moldings from the inside?
What are the small holes on the right side for?

Thanks for looking in fella's, glad you like it!

Ond are you going to connect the side moldings from the inside?

Correct, I'll duplicate the holes on the other side for the moldings to screw into from the inside.  I have yet to create the matching top molding as per the concept drawings, once the painting of the shell is done I'll start on that.

Here's how the blue paint went on.  Expensive little rattle cans of modellers paints but well worth it.  The color in the second image is closer to the real thing, blue/violet which is a close match to the controls color.

Here's the guts I've chosen, the smallest motherboard and PS I could find with a nice mount for an SSD drive on the back of the Motherboard.  Speakers are just parts ratted from a small Logitech sub and satellites I had lying around.

I'm going to use the on-board graphics card which should be fine.  The unit will run a small selection of classic vertical games.  The fans are small 80mm (3") ones, gives you an idea of how miniature the other components are!  It will be a few day's till the next update.  I need to let the paint dry and then paint the front in dark grey.  The finish will be as applied from the can, I'm not after a mirror finish on this, so no multiple coats with endless wet sanding.  The paint does go on very smooth though!

Ready for paint later today.

You mentioned this coating is Bondo (unless I misunderstood what you were talking about). If so what kind of Bondo is that? I've heard of people using Plastic Bondo, and figured that is what you used here but I cannot find any myself.

The yellow coating is high build primer sprayed on using a rattle can in several coats and sanding in between.  I also use 'Bondo' a separate product, as a wood filler to fill gaps and small imperfections.  See my videos in the How to videos thread on the Main Board for lots of details.

Now that I see that blue, you only need to integrate white and you'll have R2-D2 colors.

Thankyou! Just about more than anything, peoples interest in my designs is a big buzz for me.

Now that I see that blue, you only need to integrate white and you'll have R2-D2 colors.

That's...........a frikkin awesome idea!  I'll do the side moldings in white.  Now why didn't that even occur to me?

Cool, cool, cool.
Cheers mate, cool bartops are up there with cool mini vpins on my list.  ;D

Please come to England and paint my next cab.

Very tempting offer, but beers are warm in Blighty

I'm back on this project today, masking and painting the front , plus starting on the top moldings.  The top moldings are going to need some mad kerfing to get the bends in them to match the cab...should be fun.  I've set up the computer system for this cab now and ordered a scanline generator.  No HLSL for this puppy.  I hope I ordered a good scanline generator, it's from Focus Attack.  Also very impressed with the mini motherboard features.  For a micro second I considered using a Rasberry PI, but only a micro second.

Can someone point me to onds paint tutorial, can't find it from the main forum..

They are right here, it helps to drink alcohol while listening to me drone on, hope you find them useful!

Front painted and white plastic inserts added (not yet positioned correctly).  I still have to make the white plastic insert for the front edge of the control panel.  Speaker grills glued in.

I'm going to keep working on the side and top moldings now, next update when they are primed up.

Internals all finished on this except for the scan-line generator which I'm waiting on delivery of...any day now...  I swapped out the heat-sink on the CPU for
a beefier one I happened to have, this should help keep it nice and cool.  I also removed the CPU fan as the inlet fan mounted in the cab provides that function.
OS and FE (Mala) are set up with games loaded - it's playable, I spent a fun morning testing games out.

I should have the moldings coated in primer later today.  The final work on this other than painting the moldings will be wiring and diffusing the white LED lighting for the
marquee, rear logo and front CP strip.  12v power for these is from a feed from the computer PS.  Oh, and mounting in the monitor of course.  I came up with a handy way to mount the monitor
which may interest a few people!

It's a single board, a small Logitech amp for the sound system. I need to use VGA as I'm using a scan-line generator in this cab, so I'm using a HDMI to VGA converter.  I saw one in a cab when I was in the US and really liked it, plus it frees the modest graphics card from having to process HLSL effects.

I was thinking of mainly older classic vertical games but I'm open to suggestions  :).  An SSD is already in the system you might have missed my reference to it in an earlier post.  This motherboard is brand new so it can use the most current SSD's they don't look much like a hard drive anymore, everything is still getting smaller and faster (which is good).  The board can even take the new PCIE SSD's but that's overkill. Here is the SSD mounted on the back of the M'Board.

Here is my monitor mounting solution using little wooden camlocks that I made, it works well enough and allows the monitor to be removed fairly easily.

The monitor is also new.  You can still buy new 17" 4:3 monitors.  This one, an LG unit, is very light and thin, perfect for a narrow space.

Getting close to completion on this one.  Some final paint touch-ups, clean up of some glue marks and fitting of the white moldings remain, everything else is complete.  Here's a sneak peek of it at my workbench.  A bit of LED light shows through the speaker grills, I'll remedy that, probably tone down the LED brightness as well.

Thanks fella's you guy's have certainly inspired me with your own projects so I'm glad you like this one! While I waited for paint to dry on the cab today, I drew up the Mala Xenolix skin.  Here's a sample, it's angular, blue-violet and silver grey with white glowy stripes etc to match the theme.  Just a simple single menu with a bit of a SHMUPs feel.

With the white moldings fitted this bartop cab will have a more complete Viewlix look about it, as I originally intended in the design.

Ond's videos are in this post of the "Are there "How to Videos" on arcade building?" thread.

EDIT: Parts 2, 3, and 4 play embedded, but part 1 forces you to play it on YouTube because, "This video contains content from UMG."
The videos don't show when you view the "Mera Peak" account, but they are still available.

EDIT. Here is the Dropbox link for all tutorials:  https://www.dropbox.com/sh/n9jro2gq42arrzj/AADoKwG7ajQuIHPj3TC8_odEa?dl=0

Dropbox is syncing right now, but all videos should appear there after sync.
