That reminds me.  My kids have become addicted to this game now.  The 11 year old plays it the second he gets done with his homework and will continue, if allowed, straight through to bedtime.   The older one rarely plays anything but will play Goldeneye.  They had 3 other boys over the other day and all they did for 3 hours was play Goldeneye.  Now the other kids want N64s.  They have named the short kid in the group Oddjob.  In the car the other day they spent ten minutes discussing the merits of the various weapons and whether or not the Golden Gun is really worth it since the ammo is so limited.

The one thing that Goldeneye did exceptionally well, besides accidentally being a cool theme much better than the movie, was quick multiplayer games.  The first couple of single player levels are phenomenal, too.  The 'just out of reach' objectives with goofy rewards kept you coming back for awhile.

The basic limitations make it really difficult to play it now, though.  The graphics were terrible even for its time.  And you can't fall off ledges.  If you enjoy farting around with ROMs it's crazy how much half finished stuff sits on those cartridges.

Granted this is a small sample of 6 boys but the graphics don't matter at all.  This is a cross section of kids that are avid classic gamers (my two boys), a couple who are PS3 kids, and a couple who are old fashioned outdoor kids not addicted to video games.  They are enjoying the multiplayer game that isn't complicated by headsets and 500 objectives and complex strategies.  They're running around a maze with weapons shooting each other.  Last night they went no weapons and I thought someone was going to wet themselves they were laughing so hard at the absurdity of an Asian midget running around slapping people in the kneecaps.  I honestly think what is appealing to them is the simplicity of Goldeneye that remains in a modern framework they are familiar with (multiplayer FPS).

I also think that this game is fairly unique in that the multiplayer mode looks better on a big screen than it did on a 27" CRT.  Yeah, the resolution suffers a lot, but the four squares are much bigger.  Once you have let go of caring about resolution there is a lot to be said for not being boxed into 1/4 of a 27" screen.
