Thanks.  The speaker cutouts are 2 1/4 x 6.  So...long and narrow.  I might just get some 4x6s and call it soup.

Re: The Man with No Name - Hardware INSTALLED!!
« Reply #41 on: October 25, 2012, 09:56:21 am »
Nice to have all of the construction done.  I think I'll put a couple of vents on the top and on the back near the bottom.  I still have some soffet vents left from The Blue Pill.  But, I have all of the hardware installed.  Very happy this one is moving along.  I want it out of my garage so I can start working on some BMX projects.  :afro:

Looks like an old english sports car:

Actually got to use my 4 year old Happ latches:

And, as usual, Blum inset pocket hinges for the door and CP top:

Now...on to the art.

Speaker time!

Yes, that's right...26 bux at biglots.  Love biglots.

Big brother watching over:

Pretty maids all in a row:

Now, if it would get just a skosh warmer so I can paint at night, I'd be thrilled.

Paint!  4 coats on the main cab, 2 on the door, and whatever.  Enjoy!

Door and hardware back on.  Now, I can put the final coats on with the door on.  That should even it out.  Now, if I could just get the damn roller covers from depositing fuzz in the damn paint, I'd be good!

Box with a bump!

Final artwork coming soon.

Big updates tonight.  Got the monitor install sorted.  It's an NEC MutliSync 19".  Free from the last job!  I still have one more of these left.  :tool:

Looks like a cab with a monitor in it:

Love having very *LITTLE* left of raw materials:

There it is next to it's older brother:

The "rounded nose" box turned out much better on this cab.  The base of the CP boxen are exactly the same, as are the dimensions of the boards making up the front.  But, on The Blue Pill, the angles are much more pronounced.

The "Man with No Name" box looks much more rounded. :

Next time- to keep the new roller fuzz out of your paint: stretch a 3' or so piece of masking tape between your foot (stand on it) and your hand with the sticky side facing you.  run the new roller up and down on the sticky side of the tape covering the entire width.  it will pull off the fuzz and fluff up the roller, and your first paint strokes will be nice and clean.

Awesome, Thanks!  I ended up using a 1/4" nap microfiber roller.  Expensive little bastard.

There's a hold on leather t-molding from gamemolding.com, so I'm waiting on that.  LeChuck did some really nice art for the marquee after I sent up a flare for ass-ssistance over in artwork, so I'm stealing that, signing his name somewhere in it, then getting it printed along with the CP that I came up with.

So, once I get the in-law's credit card to order the art from gameongrafix.com, and get the t-molding, this thing will fly out of the garage!  Can't wait, since I have a bunch of other projects I have to get to around the house.

Here's a pic of LeChuck's work.  I edited the colors to match the CP that I'd done, but that is IT!

I've made this a little darker (not seen here) and skewed the background pic, but this is the basic idea:

It'll have all white buttons and a white light behind the marquee.

Art has been ordered.  Here's the poop.

Marquee...adjusted main colors to better match the CP.  Hope it looks similar with backlighting.  Going with either a pair of 4" CCFLs or the standard 18" florescent.:

Figure this will be closer to the marquee once the marquee is lit.  Also, skewed the image to better fit the CP and be more aligned with the CP top:

Props to LeChuck.  Forever immortalized in my in-laws house.  :

Once that's here and the t-molding arrives, this thing will be kicked out of my garage into its new home.

Thanks to all for the help and advice.

Tiny update today...ordered t-molding last night from gamemolding.com.  Preston hooked me up with some remnants so I could get the build underway even though he's waiting for a full order of leather t-molding.  Also, I like supporting local Ga. businesses (since I live here) and NOT supporting businesses in the state that hates me (t-molding.com is in Ct...where I grew up).

Painted the $1.98 Home Depot edge guard/marquee retainer.  Tape on the outside and paint on the inside:

Pull off the tape and you get a shiny new marquee retainer:

Also painted the aluminum j-channel to mount the plexi.  Flat black to match the door-pull.  No pics..it's boring stuff.   :dunno

Hoping to have t-molding and art here by end of week!  Then, I can get on to what I enjoy most!  WIRING!! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAWWWWWWWWWWW!

Man, get out of cali!  Seriously...it's just too damn hard to live there with all them politicians pick-pocketing you.  Jobs here are good, housing prices are awesome, schools are great and it's very business friendly.  All with less taxation (that they hide in your gas prices and other prices).

I got a bud in San Diego who retired from the Navy and he can't get his wife to leave outta there!!

Atlanta.  Been here since 94 or so.  I really like the Carolina's too.  Nice beaches close by, good mountain biking and the perfect blend of wilderness and small cities.

Atlanta...no so much.  It's very busy here and even the mountain bike trails are directional by day.

Back to work. Check.  So, for the last week, a broken tooth that I probably suffered 20 years ago when I was a professional BMX'er has been making sleep miserable all week.  But, I managed to get the t-molding on tonight (the package had gone to the in-laws and I got it today).

So, small update.  Artwork is en route from GOG, so I should have that in by mon/tues and hopefully get this thing outta the garage by end of week.

t-molding shots...really start the "finished" look.  I think the leather look is the right choice:

Got the felt-feet on, too, so it stands proud and the door doesn't scrape on the nice, even floor of the garage. ::) :

Now to get ready for my 8 am root canal.

FUN!

Yeah.   This will be my 8th or 9th.  The only teeth in my mouth that I was born with are the 4 front ones now.  Tons of facial trauma in the 80s have been rearing up for the last decade or so.  It hasn't been fun.

So, tonight it's some CL-Smoothes (Coors Lights) and ibuprofen.

ART!!!!  Despite the fact that my face still can't move and my nostril keeps collapsing, I decided to get the CP art on when it came in the mail today.

Once again, GOG provided an excellent repro of the art I sent over.  The only problem is that the leather look t-molding seems to be a bit less than 3/4" when it's pounded in, so it didn't capture the plexi very well at all.  If anyone has a suggestion, short of re-cutting the CP and trying again, I'm all ears.  Until then, I put a nice chamfer on the edges and left it at that.  Hopefully, noone will pull up on it...

Anywhoo, here's the CP with the new GGG buttons and GGG trackball installed:

The art in the pics looks a little green, that's because of my garage lighting.  The art is actually a nice, warm sepia glow...

I don't have pics of the marquee, yet.  But it looks pretty nice.  It's a little dark without light behind it, but when lit, it looks awesome.  I'm going to have to trim it up a bit and install the light, but I think it'll be nice.  I should have that installed, the speaker fabric on the speaker panel and start the wiring by the weekend.

But, for now, I'm still convelescing with this stupid root canal.

I had a similar issue, and you probably want to go another route. My CP was way smaller lol

Lexan lip over the t-molding

The fix was to route out a lexan sized layer off of the top of the CP

Worked perfectly on this 22" CP

Yeah, I thought I compensated for the plexi.  But, it stands PROUD of the t-molding.  I filed a 45 degree chamfer on it with a sanding block and it seems better, but the t-molding definately doesn't capture it like I wanted.

But, what can you say for garage work .   :dunno

I'll ponder it over the next week since that's how long I have until I think I'll have to program the PC and get it all working.  I still have a lot of work to do.

Actually, in looking at your CP, I might be able to fenagle some sort of fastener on each corner to compensate.  The overall theme is old west, so something with a dark patina might not be too noticable.

Otherwise, the art is fantastic and I got almost perfect with the trackball and other holes.

Marquee is in.  It's about a 1/4" short, so I'll have to fill in the edges, but the colors look great.  The light wash on my android is horrible, but it looks excellent.  I'll try to get a better pic tomorrow..

While it looks dark sans light, when lit, it's almost an exact match!  Thanks to LeChuck for the assist on the art!:

Next is speakers, kill the light coming from the speaker holes and start wiring!!

Big update tonight.  Spent the last 4 hours wiring the CP and testing the connections with a multi-meter.  Enjoy!

Had to shorten the leads for the GGG trackball.  These things were LLLLOOOONNNNGGGG!!:

Got all the fasteners and crap and started to work!  Blue for 2P and purple for 1P.  Commons are RED!.
Switch wires installed:

Commons installed on top.  Using multi-colored zip ties since I ran out of black...

End result!  Can't wait to plug it in.  I have to cover the speaker panel in speaker fabric, then set up the computer and it's ready!!

Thanks!

It's an arcade!!!!

Well...it's friggin freezing out....for GA standards.  But, I managed to get the thing put together tonight.

First, 2 setbacks...  first the GX270 that I had earmarked for the cab had the Dell capacitor issue...it died when I was loading MAME on it...crap!  Second, I hacked a C14 plug off it's power supply and proceeded to melt the entire thing trying to get the wires and resistors off it.  It was a tangled mess.

Anyway, I hacked a C14 plug off another power supply, CUT the offending crap outta the way, then soldered the power into an awesome power strip that I bought.  The sound, marquee and monitor are REMOTELY CONTROLLED with a neat little fob.  So, the PC is always on, but the monitor, marquee and sound are on remotely controlled power outlets on the strip.  So, leave the room, push the button on the fob and monitor, sound and marquee are off.  Here's a link.  Basically, 2 outlets are always on, and 4 are on a remote that looks like a key fob:

Here's pics of the arcade!  It's running.  I just have to update the mamewah skin, and it's done.  Once it's moved into their house on X-mas eve, I can order the plexi that fits into my homebrew knohbody monitor mount!  The speaker panel is entirely covered in speaker fabric from Jo-Anns and it looks awesome.  It lets just a bit of light down on the control panel.  Enjoy:

Oh, and I've totally ripped off another member's idea for a serial plate:

I can't wait to get this outta the garage!

Got the Mamewah skin sorted.  Should look great behind the tinted plexi from Tap.

Father in law is on his way over to see it.  I think he'll be happy with it.  Unfortunately, my mother in law is very sick today, so I can't actually deliver it to their house.  That should give me a couple more days to tweak software, etc.

Well, it's that time again!  Time to say goodbye to another build thread!  Here's the finished pics of "A Fistful Of Quarters".  It's been a trying build what with the art and stuff.  Thanks to Knievel for the design of the Evolution, the CP and the inspiration of the wiring.  Thanks especially to LeChuck for sorting out the art.  I just don't know crap about westerns and he fully un-screwed it up!

So, My mother in law is still ill...fever, etc.  So, X-mas has been called until this weekend.  Should allow me some time to finish up some tweaks to Mamewah and wire those 2 admin buttons...then it moves on to their house.  It's been plugged in and running for the past few days and no fires, or funky smells.  I found a Dell B110 Celeron 2.6 that is running awesome in the thing.  Killer Instinct, etc is running most awesomely.  Got some tunes on there (they're in their 60s but still groove to Eagles, Stevie Ray Vauhn..) and it's ready to move.  My wife got out her cam and got some decent shots of the marquee and stuff, so I thought I'd share:

Here's how it looks lit up:

View of the new Mamewah skin:

Thanks again!  Looking forward to getting this one out and moving on to the next project.  Looks like I'm building some bar-tops!  Should be interesting.  I think I'll be doing Jamma on those.  So, I'm psyched about learning Jamma!

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Looks like this one is in the bag!  I got the admin buttons wired and sorted tonight.  Left is esc and right is pause.  Here's the kids going nutz:

Looking great.

For future builds to save having to use admin buttons at all have you considered going the shifted button route. On Revolution to exit I hold down player 1 then hit player 2. For pause P1+P1 Joystick Down, I even have manual screen rotation overrides on P1+P1 Joystick Left & Right. I've yet to feel like I needed any admin buttons.
