NFL Last Man Standing Pick 'Em 2012 - ROUND TWO!

I ran this the last couple of years and Chad ran it the first few years.  I was going to post it next week, but I'm bored at work today and may not have time next week to do it.

Rules are simple.  Choose one game each week.  Pick the winner.  If you are wrong you are eliminated from the game.  Last man standing wins.  I will keep track of everyone's picks each week and display them by editing this post. 

When making a pick, highlight it in the post, so that they're easier to pick out.  I don't want to miss anyone's pick.  If you don't know how to highlight it, copy somebody else's pick and change the color name if you want.

A pick must be made every week.  Failure to make a pick results in elimination.   Picks should be posted in this thread so that people have the ability to double check my work.

You cannot pick a game with the same team two weeks in a row.  If you pick the Rams over the Titans in week 2, you cannot use either the Rams game or the Titans game in week 3.  Having everyone help with this will eliminate the possibility of a mistake on my end on this item.  You can pick a team multiple times over the season. 

Entrant pool closes an hour preceding the game you want to pick.  That means that if you want to pick Thursday's game this week you must do so at least an hour before the game starts.  Forum timestamps will be binding.

That's right.  Because a champion rolls over in pregame warmups at the sight of 3" of snow.  Watching those guys on the sidelines I was embarrassed for them. 


Heh, I had REALLY GOOD seats for that game, and the guy a few seats down from me jumped onto the field and tried to hug Junior Seau.  Seau was laughing and everybody thought it was in fun.  They did arrest the guy, of course, but then they tried to hang assault and battery charges on the poor jerk.  I was 20 yards away and saw the whole thing.  Dude ran over, hugged Seau, they slowly fell down because the guy was drunk and Seau tried to hold him up but failed, and nobody stopped laughing the whole time.  The next day in the papers it was a "tackle, assault and battery on the sideline."


Pats stripped those season tickets, too, which must have sucked for the people that actually owned them.  It wasn't that guy.

Last night was a good game, could have been better, Refs made if nearly unwatchable.  Well, it would have been unwatchable for me but I had Manning, Ryan, Jones, Gonzales and MacGahee going on 2 fantasy teams so I HAD to watch to see what happened.  But it was brutal to sit through.

I haven't seen it but usually an official throws his hat down when a WR runs out of bound (not pushed by a defender) and then comes back in.  He's ineligible to be the first player to touch the ball. 

The other reason an official throws his/her hat is when they've already thrown there flag and they want to mark another penalty.

Either of those happen?

Dude, the refs throw their hats all the time.  It's just weird that he stepped on it exactly when he was trying to change direction.  A ref might throw his hat ten times a game depending on which ref it is.

Looked to me like he was going to call some sort of pass interference and threw his hat to mark it.  NFL refs don't usually do that but who knows what level ref that guy was a month ago?

Well, the fact that it can be compared to what a lot of people call the worst Ref call in NFL history already speaks volumes. (At least worst if you think the tuck rule call is justifiable).

I would say that there are a couple differences here that make this call worse. First, San Diego screw up was not a scoring play. They were given a bad call, but at least the chargers had further opportunity to stop the Broncos from scoring, granted it was in the final minutes. The Packer game was a situation where the Packers were winning, and on the absolute final play of the game, the refs awards a touchdown to a guy who who didn't catch the ball. Tate even pushed off another player to be in on the jump.

The second difference I see is that this falls on the entire referee group. The Ed Hochuli call was one ref who was accountable. He was demoted after that game. This game, all the replacement refs footlocker employees the NFL hired were clueless. One ref got the call right and didn't bother to speak up. They shouldn't have even made a defining call until reviewing the play, because they knew their initial decision was not reversible in this case.

I agree. It was a case where the rule sucked, and the fact that it was previously unenforced that made it dumb, not the refs that enforced the rule. To me, the tuck rule signified the point in NFL history where the rules officially became a hindrance to the game. The league mentality was to base game play on technicalities. Right now, it feels like watching an NBA game. Players are looking for a penalty call after practically every play. Not to mention that due to rule changes, the QB is treated like a hemophiliac and the run game is dying. Next year, they will probably be attaching velcro flags to each players' hips.

Well, this year, it's the physical pass defenses that are winning.  Look at who the surprise teams are.  They're bump and run defenses.  This year it's more like grab and molest.  Finesse timing offenses, like New England, are completely disrupted because backfield coverages are grabbing so much more than the last couple of years.  This is absolutely a result of the difference in officiating.  These refs don't have the real time skill to apply the rules the same way so they are afraid to make judgement calls.  Then, when they do, half the time it's wrong anyway.  Then throw in a couple of shots like the ones Romo kept taking this week and I'm surprised some teams are scoring on offense at all.

Granted, those pass interference rules have been way too much in favor of the offense recently, but the rules needed to be changed.  Just changing the way everything is called wasn't the right way to fix things.

Well, good ol Fox switched over to soccer after the Cowboys game... and, man, that sport just isn't for me.  After seeing too many college football teams screwed because we can't have nice things like playoffs, I gave up on that.  Now it's just NFL and it's wearing really thin.

Can someone explain to me how you can be on foot, jump in the air, have the tip of the ball just barely break the plane, land out of bounds, and that's a touchdown... but if you catch the ball, maintain possession over the end zone, and drop it when you land, or get tackled and drop it, or you land out of bounds, and that's not a touchdown?

Obviously referring to the Cowboys game yesterday but this has driven me nuts for years, even when I'd be on the wrong end of that call.

It's not a complete catch until you establish possession on the ground either on your feet or when you land on the ground in bounds.  You can't score a touchdown unless you have possession of the ball.

Rules are simple.  Choose one game each week.  Pick the winner.  If you are wrong you are eliminated from the game.  Last man standing wins.  I will keep track of everyone's picks each week and display them by editing this post. 

When making a pick, highlight it in the post, so that they're easier to pick out.  I don't want to miss anyone's pick.  If you don't know how to highlight it, copy somebody else's pick and change the color name if you want.

A pick must be made every week.  Failure to make a pick results in elimination.   Picks should be posted in this thread so that people have the ability to double check my work.

You cannot pick a game with the same team two weeks in a row.  If you pick the Rams over the Titans in week 2, you cannot use either the Rams game or the Titans game in week 3.  Having everyone help with this will eliminate the possibility of a mistake on my end on this item.  You can pick a team multiple times over the season. 

Entrant pool closes an hour preceding the game you want to pick.  That means that if you want to pick Thursday's game this week you must do so at least an hour before the game starts.  Forum timestamps will be binding.

I ran this the last couple of years and Chad ran it the first few years.  I was going to post it next week, but I'm bored at work today and may not have time next week to do it.

Rules are simple.  Choose one game each week.  Pick the winner.  If you are wrong you are eliminated from the game.  Last man standing wins.  I will keep track of everyone's picks each week and display them by editing this post. 

When making a pick, highlight it in the post, so that they're easier to pick out.  I don't want to miss anyone's pick.  If you don't know how to highlight it, copy somebody else's pick and change the color name if you want.

A pick must be made every week.  Failure to make a pick results in elimination.   Picks should be posted in this thread so that people have the ability to double check my work.

You cannot pick a game with the same team two weeks in a row.  If you pick the Rams over the Titans in week 2, you cannot use either the Rams game or the Titans game in week 3.  Having everyone help with this will eliminate the possibility of a mistake on my end on this item.  You can pick a team multiple times over the season. 

Entrant pool closes an hour preceding the game you want to pick.  That means that if you want to pick Thursday's game this week you must do so at least an hour before the game starts.  Forum timestamps will be binding.

I don't think so.  House wins in the event of a tie and since we don't have a house, the default would be the member doesn't advance.  Just my opinion (for next year), but there are three possible outcomes in an NFL game: win, lose or tie.  We're asking people to pick the winner not the loser of a game.

If everyone wants it a particular way, thats fine with me.  I'm channeling my inner PBJ just to argue.   

Correction:  Most NFL games can end in a win unless you play for the turd burglers in Detroit.  Just sayin'....

After some thought, it seems like if I ran the table and somehow won out, that tie would be a BIG OLE asterisk.

Let's count ties as losses. Pick a winner... not a loser or a tie game. Or another creative way would be that games that result in a tie require 2 games to be called the following week.


Good lawd that game was lousy sitting through. The way it was played, I'm glad both teams half lost. The refs sh*t in the punch bowl too. They managed to waste over a minute off the clock by mistake. It was ---gosh-darn--- terrible.

jimfath, don't get cocky about running the table to win this.  Anything can happen.   

I really wouldn't sweat it about picking the tie.  We didnt have a rule about it so it's no big deal to me.  If someone, who is still left in this picking games, has a concern please send me a PM.  Barring that, keep picking.  It's not like this is for big bucks.  We are just a bunch of idiots on a message board doing something to avoid working.

A fun rule for a tie in the future should be something like you have to stay with your pick the next week no matter who they play.  Punishes the person by removing their decision, but doesn't take them out.
