Best windows OS to use??

My personal machine runs XP and I was using it in my cabinet prior too me getting my new machine.  So I know MAME32 runs great on XP.

The IPAC programming utility doesnt run on XP.. So I'll probably end up installing 98 on my Mame machine.  Which really sucks.. because XP is alot easier to work with.

Thanks all for your input!

You could just use some creative partioning and install multiple OSes.. if it's a new machine, surely you'll have a HDD substantial enough for this.. unless you are too concerned about too many bloated OSes on one system.

I plan be able to select between plain DOS, Win98SE (for compatibility), and XP (for stability and future compatibility). Maybe Linux, but I'm of the mindset that Linux isn't really the gaming platform of choice <cringes in anticipation of flaming>.

Sorta pushing my Mame:Analog+ and it's multiple mice, one mouse per player feature. ;D

XP has one major fault, IMO:

XP joins all mice into one, and only gives DirectX that one "mouse".  With win98/ME and USB mice, DirectX (and Analog+) get each USB mouse separate plus the joined "mouse".

So you need to use win98 or ME to be able to do two player, two trackball marble madness and cabal, or 3 player/3 spinner SuperSprint and Offroad, or 3 player/3 trackball rampart.

I'm never going to XP until MS fixes this problem, or someone can hack around it.  If you are like me, I suggest sticking with win98se.

I wouldn't worry about the ipac programming so much.  It is not a reason to not use 2000 or XP.  You can always put another partition on the drive with a minimal install of win 98.

That depends on what you are trying to do.

I run three different emus on my machine. One of the emus does not allow for reassigning the keys. I run all three emus from the same front end(GameLauncher), so I need to reprogram the IPac constantly.  I have different IPac config files that I send to the IPac depending on the emu that I want to run.

With this type of setup, I cannot use win2000 or XP.
