Pinball entry
« on: August 17, 2012, 05:05:41 pm »
Just noticed that the Pinball entry is horribly outdated.  (Multiple dead links, etc.)

Does anybody have any objections/improvements to the following changes:

I'm thinking about choosing a better screenshot (a 4:3 table with a backglass background) and updating the text as shown below, broken out in the quote boxes for the various sections:

Quote
Visual Pinball/PinMAME
Visual Pinball (VP) is a playfield pinball simulator. It comes with a editor, so you can design your own tables. VP has a lots of well created layouts of popular pinball tables from the real world.

Visual PinMAME (VPM) is a pinball emulator. When run in conjunction with VP, VPM allows you to design and play a table that will use the actual ROM images from pinball tables. These ROM images have the table logic, sounds, and dot-matrix display animations.

The latest VP/VPM releases are all on www.vpforums.org, so the two links above direct to that homepage. (Current wiki link targets are no longer updated.)

Quote
How to install the software.

On VPForums.org, there is a "Getting Started" pulldown menu in the upper left of the page.

Download the Installation Guide, VP Installer, and all the Essential Files from the pulldown menu.

Follow the Installation Guide step-by-step.  Print a copy or have it on a nearby laptop.

VP Installer will install and configure Visual Pinball 8 (the updated VP9 physics engine can cause unusual motion in VP8 or earlier tables), Visual Pinball 9, and Visual PinMAME.

After running the VP Installer, the Installation Guide will direct you to install the latest version of VP and VPM.

If you encounter problems during the install, there is a Installation Support Forum on VPForums.org.

How to run VP on my cabinet.

You need a wrapper or cab-friendly Front-End to get this to run in your cabinet.  Visual Pinball is not cab-friendly by itself.

Hyperspin/Hyperpin links here. (not sure if hyperspin works as FE for VP/FP)

Other cab-friendly FE programs?

Shouldn't the VP/FP FE programs be listed together below the FP section?

Quote
Future Pinball
Future Pinball (FP) is the next generation Pinball Development System.  It was written by the same people behind Visual Pinball.

It allows you to design and play your very own pinball simulation in True real time 3D.  It uses Advanced Physics to provide the best possible Simulation of a true to life pinball machine.

Future Pinball does not utilize VPM, nor does it have the option to use pinball table ROMs.  Any information that would normally be stored in the ROM is written into the script or stored in a library file.

Quote
How to run FP on a cabinet.

You should download the lastest version (from 1.5.2 or above) to get this to work on your cabinet, if you are using the gameport. But if you use a keyboard hack, it may lose focus at the startup, so you need a wrapper. This wrapper should also work for cabinets, using gameport.

The wrapper link is dead, not quite sure what point the rest is trying to get across.

Combine this section with the VP FE section above?

Quote
About Sticky Keys

Future Pinball allows table creators to use two special keys that can be fully remapped by the application.

But some table authors have overlooked this feature, and used stickykeys instead.  This is generally not good for use on a cabinet, and thus must be fixed.  It is often very easy to fix these by just looking at the script.  Find the keyname (like "h"), and change it.  Some creators have even defined these stickykeys at the top of the script, so you only need to change it once.

Is this section needed?  In-depth troubleshooting like this might be better refered to VPForums.

Is stickykeys supposed to be one word or two?

Oops, sorry I didn't update. There is a problem with the logins related to the upgrade/move. We're (read that as sirwoogie since I just tend to break things when I go behind the scenes) having to rework the Wiki. I will update when that is working again.

Not to be impatient/pushy, but is fixing the Wiki logins still somewhere on the "to do" list?   :dunno

The question still remains unanswered -- Is fixing the Wiki logins still somewhere on the "to do" list?   :dunno

With all due respect, Saint -- Sirwoogie hasn't logged in since 9 Nov and you never responded to my 5 and 15 Dec PMs. (Follow-up message sent today.)

If you're already working it, a simple "I'm on it" would be appreciated.

If not, why not?

I've had a sudden urge to work on the wiring page, but...

And that brings us (a couple of days early) to the One Two Three Five Seven month bump + progress check.

The question still remains unanswered -- Is fixing the Wiki logins still somewhere on the "to do" list?   :dunno

If you can't fix this login problem, Saint, it is time to get your ass in gear and find another IT helper who can.

As before, if you're already working it, a simple "I'm on it" would be appreciated.

If you're not looking for a helper, why not?

If you are looking, what would it hurt to say so?

Your giving me the silent treatment in this thread is a pretty crappy thing to do IMNSHO.   :badmood:

Normally I'd only address a lack of common courtesy and manners like that in a PM to avoid needlessly airing dirty laundry, but . . . *sigh*.  :banghead:

Apparently, Sirwoogie agreed in this PM on August 19th.

Quote from: sirwoogie
We're aware of it. We'll be fixing it in the next few days.

Unfortunately, he didn't fix it before he dropped off the grid in November.

Not even sure if he got around to trying to fix it.   :dunno

I just hope that Saint reaches the fifth stage in the Kübler-Ross model sometime soon, but it appears as though he's stuck in the first stage. (Hint: It's not just a river in Egypt.)   >:D

Saint,

Have you looked at this page?

Looks like it may have fixes for several causes of the error message coming up when trying to log into the Wiki.

One of the problems is the integration between SMF and the wiki is an old, outdated, no longer supported mod. Thoughts on dumping the integration and having a separate username/password on the wiki vs. trying to fix this link?

I like it when they update the front page. /late burn

As for the integration, cant you just dupe the username/passwords for the wiki (so I can be sure Im Malenko on there before XuiceBox signs up as me)?
I should prolly update the wiki, give me something to do at work besides get moderated on the forums.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.

you still haven't responded to my 5 Dec, 15 Dec, or 25 Jan PMs.

I am glad to see this is back on your radar -- which is why I PM'd you those times.

Hopefully someone who knows what they're doing can get this sorted.

Seems like there must be at least one SMF2 forum out there that has Wiki integration working.   :dunno

Eight month bump.  Looking for someone who knows the elusive art of wiki wrangling and/or input on the question of separate logins.

My 2 cents:

Keep looking for someone who knows how to integrate the 2 logins, since that is the ideal outcome.

While we're waiting (. . . and waiting, and waiting. . . ;D), establish separate logins for the wiki because it desperately needs attention.

-- Option 1 - User PMs Mod to create login.  Mod sends PM with a temp password.

-- Option 2 - Allow users to create login/password.

If anyone notices their (or someone else's) wiki login being hijacked, PM a mod who can set a different wiki password and PM it back to the user's forum account, allowing the actual user to regain control.

The sad truth is that the number of contributors/editors will probably be small enough to make either option manageable, but I'd love to be proved wrong on this.   >:D

As you say, I'd guess there would be few accounts who'd want update ability.  As such, pm'ing a mod to create account doesn't seem far fetched imho.

In the interest of not totally ignoring folks - I'm in the absolute worst part of the year in my work and personal life. Anything that's not a few button clicks gets back burnered. Come July I get a breather for a couple of months. If SirWoogie isn't available to fix things before then I'm of the mind to just install a brand new Wiki with its own security credentials, and migrating everything over. Do we need secure editing, or should it just be open?

You know, Scott, you could probably create a free Wiki somewhere and just have Saint link to it. Probably be quicker.

1 year bump.

Good news: i haven't had a stroke (yet).   :lol

Not-so-good news: So far, no word on how (or if) the wiki fix is proceding.  Sirwoogie has only logged in once since November last year AFAIK.

Good news indeed :-)

This basically means that we shouldn't expect an update anytime soon. AFAIK Sirwoogie did the technical stuff on the server? Even switching back to basic Wiki-native authentication shouldn't take too much time, and at least makes the wiki usable again.

That takes us back to reply 21 in this thread.

What say you to this proposal, Saint?

- Separate logins for Forums and Wiki.
- Archive changes enabled to allow easy rollbacks if needed.
- Select a mod/mods to handle a WikiMod account similar to the way the UCA (User Choice Award) account works now.
- Users PM the WikiMod account to establish a login with the same username as in the forums. (modded username if the "underscore bug" is a problem?)
- WikiMod sets up login and sends confirmation PM with temp password.

This is what you need:
https://github.com/SimpleMachines/smf-mw-auth

The php code for the authentication extension file was recently updated 19 days ago and should be good to go. Script authored 4 days ago.

The installation instructions are very simple.

Now you just need to contact someone with FTP access ;).

Triskadekaphobics beware! :scared

13-month bump.

Saint -- I replied to your last PM on August 24th at 11:37:43 am and sent a follow-up email with the same text about a week later, they must have been lost in the bit-bucket again. :badmood:

Also, any comment on Powtripp's github link?
