I see the potential there, but the 199 price tag is seriously too high (It didn't mention a price back then).  For that price one can get a modern handheld and run the neogeo games on it via emulation.  If new games are released for it that will be another story, but thus far, no new games have been announced.

I caught this story on Yahoo! News after somehow missing it at BYOAC. Yeah, I agree: The $199 price tag is seriously too high.

A modern handheld with emulation would be a better investment since you're not limited to just Neo Geo games.

For new games, just talk to Sjaak. He'll clone them for you with Visual Studio and Microsoft XNA Game Studio.

Player 3:

Handheld has an SD slot so it's just emulating.  Already a pile of $50 handhelds from China that can do that.
Those shoulder buttons are just going to be ABCD cloned.

It's not going to work with cartridges. The handheld is supposed to fit into the cartridge slot of the AES-styled dock, which can output the games to HDMI or AV. The screen on the handheld appears to be 16:9, so new games would be in the works.

ABCD cloned?

Heh that's what I was thinking.

Just like the Ouya I would caution anyone into buying this.  Yeah it's designed for new games.... but it's also made by SNK Playmore.  So unless they announce some solid titles I hope you like watered down Metal Slug sequels and King of Fighters... cause that's all your getting.

See I made the same arguments you did months ago when I first saw it Player 3... but it's almost release time for the device and not a single new game has been announced.  That doesn't bode very well.  Again, just like the Ouya, I sure hope I'm wrong on this one... it'd be cool to see something new from snk, but I doubt I am.

So what would you like to see in a new console or handheld? Obviously new games...but Jim and Howard what makes this more than a toy for SNK Fanboi's?

I don't see any similarities to the Ouya at all unless its going to run on android and be targeted for indie developers not to mention all the existing Android apps.

Are you just grouchy?  ;)

Howard_Casto:
It's like the Ouya in that it's a failed concept right from the idea stage.  At least the community didn't pay for it's development, that's a good thing.

Well it IS a toy for snk fanboys... that's the point.  No "regular" person would be excited about it.  I even have my doubts that fanboys would want it, because if you are a neogeo fan you already have these games in one form or another, the built in selection is crap, and they haven't announced a system to buy more old titles for the thing, much less new games.  I wouldn't be getting excited about a plug-n-play tv game if they charged 200 bucks for it.  ;)

I can't remember the last time I've been grouchy on this forum... you must be thinking of the other guy.

To answer your question, I wouldn't like to see a new console or handheld....  Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony have that market pretty much cornered.  Any new device offered by another company would have to be significantly better in some respect than what those three are offering to get third party developer support if nothing else.  These tiny little companies simply don't have the resources to complete.

The reason I'm so hard on this on in particular one after the price has been announced?

This is essentially the same unit, only it emulates pretty much all home consoles.  When it was new you paid 199, the price of the NGX.   Now you can get em for next to nothing.  Why?  It's an "open source linux based console geared towards indie developers" and thus demand is incredibly low for the device.  It sounds familar doesn't it.  Also it was released in 2005.  One of it's sequels was released in 2010, it blows those specs away, still only 150 bucks.  The company is now out of the hardware business.

So I'm not being negative or grouchy, I'm just being realistic.  If you could go back in time and save the few poor saps out there from buying the virtual boy or the n-gauge  wouldn't you?
