Xenolix REDUX - Back In Black
« on: January 12, 2019, 06:13:33 pm »
I always liked my Xenolix bartop concept but was not happy with my build based on it. So....

Xenolix is re-born.

Edit:  this color scheme rejected, in favor of the above one.

My 2nd attempt at this project will re-use the original cabinet.  Here it is stripped back of paint and ready for refurbishment.

As the renders show, changes and improvements will include a matt black paint scheme with gloss black white edging.  Non-illuminated red white plastic insert panels.  No speaker grills on the front of the cab.  Red and black white controls.  A new rear lit marquee (art work is not final).

This is another cool looking project - I hope you aren't spreading yourself too thin trying to finish 3 at once!

Thanks,  getting this going now.

Thanks javeryh, I've found that If I have a bunch of things going at once, I'm far more likely to get out to the workshop and get things done.  I prioritize my projects, but at the moment there's a lot of time spent waiting for coats of paint to dry.  That's time I use to tinker with other things.

I tried a more traditional Viewlix style  color scheme for this cabinet.  I think I prefer it.  Its still a matt finish but slicker.

Whenever I spray RoToron components I try to spray Xenolix parts as well.  Here's the cabinet looking a bit cleaner after a two coats of primer and wet sanding.  Primer is great for getting MDF edges nice and sharp (if that's the look you are going for).

Classy as always. Did you CNC those round edges? I can't quite recall.

No CNC, just hacking at MDF with regular tools  :D.  The cutouts for the logo were CNC laser cut by member selfie and then integrated into the build.  Here are some flashback build images:

Making a cutting template for the side panels.

Cutting out the side panels using the above template with my router.

Attaching the panels and enforcing the joins with timber strips along all inside edges.

Creating the marquee box using kerfing for the curves.

Test assembly of trim pieces.

It's amazing what you can get MDF to do..if you will it so.

You miss my shoes....yah I know the ones, they gave up the ghost long ago...    :dunno

The thing is to just keep going and get the "must do" stuff done.  Like this, reinforcing the CP with several layers of fiberglass cloth.

Next to do, primer paint the decorative trim pieces and connect the side pieces to the top piece.

Sanding back the fibre glass layer on the CP.

Then sprayed with high-build primer.  Trim pieces are next.
