Hello Fellow BYOAC'ers
Thought It was time for me to contribute to the Forums!
I just bought a few Wico 8way microswitched balltop joysticks from Pixelhugger and I am glad that I did. These sticks are
NOS (new, Old, Stock) probably from the late eighties or early nineties sealed in the box, some assembly required;)
They are similar in design to the earlier Wico Leaf-switched joysticks, featuring a steampunk-era brass and Rubber centering grommet instead of the centering spring found in almost every other joystick. This grommet gives a smooshy feel with a little freedom when it is centered. I really like the way It feels. It is very nostalgic for me.
The Stick Has a 1 1/2" ball top, shiny like candy, moulded or glued (not sure which) to a 7/16" solid steel shaft. "Strong like Bull!"
The base looks and feels like ABS resin, also "Strong like Bull!" The big ball Top sits 1 1/4 " from the top of the base. I think it would fit best in a metal or thinner wood/plexi control panel.
Stick travel is about 1/4" to engage the microswitches and a bit more to hit diagonals. The square actuator is similar to the IL 8-way bat top sticks but these feel tighter, not so bouncy. The switches are not too noisy either. Much quieter than my xgaming switches. Yeah, I know, we all bought em' at one time.
One last thing that really makes these special is that these joysticks were made in USA! Freeport Illinois! imprinted right on the Microswitches!
They are going to fit right in with my old Mortal Kombat Cabinet, also made in Illinois (Chicago)
So, in summary. If you would like a Great all-around 8-way joystick with a classic feel, Built to survive Apocolyptic abuse from spirited gamers, Made in USA, Able to leap tall buildings in a single...ahem!
