Here's some light reading about diving laws in Canada and the US. The same laws that allow cops to pilfer your refuse for evidence are the same that protect divers and their found booty. Rule of thumb, if you have to jump a fence then it's a no-go. No fence, no sign, no lock = legal diving. You can find a few townships with ordinances against it but they are far and few between. Trash is public domain.

At Hastings we have to destroy anything we throw out.

I think the majority of places have the same policy. A good amount of stuff is easily fixed in my experience though. One of my better treasure troves uses orange spray paint that comes off of most surfaces with lighter fluid.

Home Depot is the same way. Here's the thing, the one I worked at didn't have a RAM that went all the way to the back, couple that with a trash pick up cycle that doesn't allow the dumpster to be full and you have a recipe for some pricey swag. The garbage guys actually started competing for the route that store was on once we threw away a riding mower that couldn't be sold (missing cowling). The ram didn't crush the mower and it was like freaking Christmas in July.

Yeah okay but I never have seen a dumpster with with no lock on it or at least a sign that says "keep out or this dumpster will eat you and you will go out with it's trash". But anyway it was a joke...... 8)
