High Score Competition #93: Exerion © 1983 Jaleco.

----------------------------------------------------

ROMSet: exerion

Default Settings

Lives: 3
Bonus: 10,000
Difficulty: Easy

----------------------------------------------------

- One credit only!

- No continues or adding credits!

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Friday June 22nd (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2012.

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.

- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).

- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed.  No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.

- If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous competitions, you can submit your score to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard.

Quote
This is a shoot-em-up game with parallax effects in the background and a nice simulation of inertia in the control of the ship. You have lots of enemies and two kinds of shooting, slow and fast.

Enjoy! :)

I think I remember hating this game, which is why I don't have it. Yeah, it's coming much clearer now, that *is* why I don't have this game.

I've never heard of it before but don't think it's a bad game. Why don't you like it? Graphics, sounds, controls, game play?

I'm baaaaack!

140,800 after a few games.

Darn my ship's mass...I wish it were massless as in pretty much every other SHMUP... :\

Got a slightly better score today.  And closer to the current #1 record holder.

120,800

Recorded the inp file like I do all of these hoping for some extraordinary gameplay and the dang thing got confused.  That's why there is a couple 3100 scores from WVU.  O-well.  Maybe when I get 1st place it will work right.

Just for laughs, 42,000.

As I played, it felt like this was a game that needed a triggerstick. I took a look at KLOV, and sure enough, it had one.

Times like this I WISH I had a frankenpanel...

I don't even have a working panel.  Just an old Logitech Wingman Extreme gamepad.

Meh. I bought an Exerion last year in a Zaxxon cab (sold it shortly after acquiring it), and I'm getting better scores with a ball top and two buttons than that triggerstick on the Zaxxon...

Ooooh, to trigger stick or to not trigger stick? That is the question.

I see multiple cabinet pics with trigger sticks or ball top sticks.

This one looks like a Gorf conversion, but with a 3-button stick (a la M.A.C.H. 3): http://www.coinop.org/MameImageSrc.aspx/9cee389e-8dd3-4a2c-bf07-1d4ef275a9ec/240/0/70

I previously had set the joystick to "inverted" flight controls, so pushing up on the stick moved the ship down, contrary to the default MAME settings. It seemed natural, given that the ship has inertia & they were going for a sort of proper 3D flight scheme (poor man's Afterburner). But, I couldn't play worth a darn that way, so I switched it back to "normal".

For some reason, I'd feel weird using my flight stick with non-inverted controls. I'll try it out...OK, I hate it. Back to the ball top!

Is anybody else getting occasional resets? I'm running on 115u2 & sometimes (twice so far) the game resets to the title screen & the high scores all go back to 0. Without MAWS, I can't find out if there were any fixes made since 115u2...

Thanks,
-Jason

Just a little bit higher then my last score.

122,500

Was having issues with the .inp again.  It would work if I didn't touch the .hi file but if I deleted it to reset the scores it would mess up again.  That is why there are multiple 122,500 scores in the list.

It just feels like it'd be a better flightstick game to me. Maybe it's the intertia thing.

Won an eBay auction that I didn't expect to, winning bid was $0.99. Didn't have room for it at my old place, and it plays just about perfect in MAME.

It's interesting to see other people's techniques. I use rapid fire on the first few waves to take out the strings of enemies quickly. I won't use it again unless I need it in a pinch or until I get to the large enemies and other strings of small enemies. But alas, you do have a higher score than me... :-[

I got a higher score in the first few waves using the slow shooting vs. The rapid fire. The enemies I hate the most are the pinkish ufo's and the greenish jet looking things.

Nice, thanks for the video.   I usually use the machine gun on the first few waves.    I will have to rethink this.   I really think my problem is the controls.   It's like driving my first car, a 73 Buick, it just kind of wandered around.   My current high score is 97k.

Played about 1hr today. Kept getting gradually & consistently increasingly higher scores until & I took the lead again.

My 1st guy was awesome, my 2nd & 3rd & 4th were disappointing...I got to a point where there were tons & tons of the green delta-shaped ships swarming about in a rather disorderly fashion. Those were the death of me...

164,400

-Jason

PS--MAME 133 seems to be good--no resets after a couple of hours of playing.

I don't think I can get any higher than this... 157300.

mimic, after the second round does the first round repeat? or does it go to a harder round? Your score is insane!

I don't know if it's harder, but the same pattern emerged after second bonus round, butterfly like ships. I think I lasted untill big birds, and that was the end of me. Now I know how to rack up big points and make 200k almost all the time and another 300K (lower than hi score) without going past 2nd bonus stage.

I wish I had time last few days to work more on my high score, so I think I'm gonna leave it where it is. I just wish I knew if jasonbar or alieninferno are working on it and then gonna drop with a better score at 11th hour.

I haven't had much time to play at all.  I had a good couple days on top.  I'll settle with what I got.
