A few years ago I attempted a restoration of a Cocktail Defender cabinet and failed miserably. I basically just threw a bunch of money at it and had no clue what I was doing. I still have the cabinet and lately I've been wondering what I should do with it. I might even consider selling the cabinet if any one has any interest, but for now I think I'm going to try and troubleshoot it. Usually, when I try powering it on 4 led lights come on the rom board and stay on until I turn it off. Every now I can turn it on and the 4 led light will flash for a second followed by the startup sound with no picture on the screen. One time after powering it on the screen cycled through red carpet over and over again. I think the problem might be with the power supply or the main board. I have a switching power supply that I bought from Bob Roberts a long time ago, but I'm not sure how to install it. I could really use some advice since I still don't know what I'm doing exactly. |

First off you need to pull the manual down. http://pdf.textfiles.com/manuals/ARCADE/A-J/ Once you get it you will know more about what its trying to tell you. Second I would think about getting a rebuild kit for the power supply. Working or not it will be needing it. Check for a rebuild kit fort the sound pcb as well and get the cap kit on order for the monitor. |

Alright, I installed the switching power supply and I get the startup sound every time now. The 4 led flash supposedly means it passed the rom/ram check. Right now I'm using the monitor hookup to power the switcher, so I have no idea if anything is showing on the screen or not. I check to see if it could play blind, but didn't have any luck. I also noticed that the second LED light on the PS was out; I guess that's why I was having problems. I'm not sure how to properly feed power to the switcher and the monitor at the same time just yet. Once I figure out how to do that I can start troubleshooting what I believe to be a problem with the main board; the same problem that caused the never ending rug pattern. I read that it might be caused by a problem with the DRAM, but since I passed the rom/ram check I'm not so sure. The monitor I have has apparently been capped, so I don't think I need to worry about it. Rebuilding the power supply sounds like a good idea; it isn't dangerous though is it? One last question: The switching PS gives off a sort-of burning metal smell similar to a hot soldering iron; should I be concerned? |

A 12-hour bump ? First go here: http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Restoration Then go here: http://homearcade.org/BBBB/buildit.html and here: http://www.coinop.org/repair/PS_Williams.aspx or here: http://www.robotron-2084.co.uk/techwilliams2jamma.html#power And, yes, be concerned about any weird smells. |
