High Score Competition #91: Burger Time © 1982 Data East.

----------------------------------------------------

ROMSet: btimem (Midway)

Coins: 1 Coin/1 Credit
Lives: 3 Chefs
Bonus Life: 20k
Difficulty: Easy
Bonus Pepper Awarded at End of Each Rack: On

----------------------------------------------------

- One credit only!

- No continues or adding credits!

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Tuesday May 22th (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2012.

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.

- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).

- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed.  No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.

- If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous competitions, you can submit your score to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard.

----------------------------------------------------

Although the spirit of "winner stays on" usually promotes picking games we're good at, I picked Burger Time. It's a great classic and one of my favourites, but I'm completely crap at it.
I picked the Midway/Bally version because if you run out of pepper in this version, a special sound effect will play, signaling this. Other than that, and a different attract mode, the versions are the same.

Best played with a 4-way joystick.

Happy Gaming all!

What's the difference between the Midway and the Data East sets? I play the DE one on my MAME cab.

I have both in my FE. Thought the only difference was the marquee.

See that boys? we got ourselves a ringer here!
He's got both versions already in his cab AND he doesn't need to use alot of peppers.
;)

Ps. I thought the marquee and CP artwork was different from region. Is it really just the different manufactured cabs?

Well, I'm not a great player, but here's a starting score. I've done better.

I don't know the reason for difference. Actually, (according to MAME) btime and btimem have the same marquee. btime2 has a different one, which is why I have it in the game list.

21,400 EDIT: Just realized I was still playing the original Data East version of the game!

Not very good. Level 3 is a death trap right from the beginning.

Agreed level 3 is a death trap.  LOL.  Think I might have made it to level 4 for this score.  Going to have to look at the recording and see.

This is one of my very favorite games.   I think I may have played this once in the arcades.   Until Mame, mostly played on the Intellivision.  I have developed a pattern I like to follow for levels 1-3.   Level 4 is just crazy.   The other levels I have a 'loose' pattern.   Before I post a score, can I get a clarification on the settings?   It says difficulty should be set to easy but I don't see that dip switch setting.   Is this on the service screen?   I see another setting for number of enemies?

Yeah, I was referring to the manual when I posted so I didn't check what mame has. But 4 enemies is Easy difficulty, according to the manual.

What's your loose pattern? I need some tips!

I wish I could get the best man from my wedding playing to show me his stuff.  He used to kill screen this game on the machine at his parent's hot dog restaurant when he was growing up.  Me, not so much.

The key to a great score with this game is to get a good pattern to get all the bad guys on 1 part of the burger and knock'em down in 1 shot. Rinse and repeat.

I love Burger Time.  Great pick!  Each and every time I play on the Intellivision, I always play Burger Time.  Level 6 is a death trap for me.  Never made it past that one.

Can't recall my high score in Mame though.  I'm sure some of you genius will destroy it though.

Wow!  I was going to offer some help but after seeing the video from Leapinlew, I am amazed!  I can usually get 3 together and score 13-15k on the first round and thought I was doing good.   I think I'm going to see if I can reproduce this.   But Leapinlew in right, if you want score points you need to get them grouped together.

Nice video Leapinlew!

I've been trying to do the pattern thing posted by leapinlew.  I find it pretty hard to accomplish.  Most I've been able to get is 2.  Allthough I've come really close to getting all 4.  Think they only held on by a pixel.

Let me start by saying that BEFORE seeing the posted video I figured I was ahead of the game.   I would average 175k to 250k per game.   I did this by getting the enemies to bunch up and I would drop 2-3 at a time scoring what I thought was a lot.  I would usually die off at round 15-16.   I started practicing trying to get all the enemies in one group like the video posted earlier.   I had some success in the first round and was able to get about 50k in round 1.   I continued to practice and found a good technique to get them ALL together.   After looping around a few times to get them all chasing me I use multiple pepper shots to get them all bunched up.   So what you do is pepper them once then wait till the trailing enemies are on top of them and pepper again.   Sometimes I use 3-4 peppers to get them just right, which is why I am usually low on pepper during these new style runs.   At one point I was getting 16k per drop.   The is my personal best, 549,000.   After I stopped thinking about saving as many peppers as I could to be used defensively, I now use them offensively to bunch them up.

Yeah, that's intense. Tonight, I too was thinking about why I wasn't using them offensively, and did a little. A little. I might start thinking more seriously about this game, though....

I've gotten better at figuring out some patterns with the levels and such, but a score like that reminds me why I don't do these challenges that often.  :lol

I've finally managed to get all four of them to move together as one.  Now if I can just repeat that 1,000,000 times I may be able to do halfway decent.

Alright, I thought I'd post a video of how I start level 1.    I did not include the entire level since you can just ad lib after they are in a bunch.   First time posting video so I hope this works.   This is a little easier to follow than the earlier post.   I only average about 50-55k though.

I like your way of bunching them up better then the previous vid.  I've managed to bunch all four of them up a couple times but it's difficult to keep them bunched up.  They'll usually split up on me after a few turns.

Here is what I do to keep them together...

1. Don't get to far away from them, for some reason they will separate on you.  I think each character has a different attack mode but when they are close to you they stay in a bunch and follow the same algorithm.

2. Stay in a direct line with them. If you move in another direction and they pass a ladder in that direction they could split

3. At the end of my video, immediately go to the next part above and drop it.   They come up the outside wall and drop them again.

Maybe I will record the whole first round?

After playing this game for so long I have a question:

If the chefs name is Peter Pepper, why does he have a H on his hat?

I thought it was a red bow.

The original title was "Hamburger", so perhaps that could be a reason for an "H" if not a bow.

Less than an hour left, and so far the tally is:
1st: kixfan 549,000
2nd: yotsuya 54,050

I haven't been able to get past the 30,000 mark myself. I tend to mainly die getting caught up on the stairs, trying to move too quickly off the ladders. Either that or while trying to bunch up the enemies and mistiming their speed. More practice it is then.

Unless someone can overtake kixfan's score, I'd say congrats kix! Nice score!

You got the next choice.

I unfortunately have my cab half taken apart.   I was hoping to have it back together by today but is taking longer than I thought.   I will have new selection by this evening though.    I am open to suggestions!

New selection for the high score competition?  I'm liking Popeye, total classic.

btw your burger time scores are amazing, The best I ever did on that was like 15k or something

Edit: oh, Popeye is already on there.  What about kick (trackball) or mouse trap, or kangaroo?

leapinlew, you are some kind of burger time genius  :applaud:
