Sorry for the delay!   At the last minute I changed my mind and went with 1942 (revision B).   I am not sure what the differences are but I thought I'd go with the latest version.  I noticed that this is the first game that starts with a number!   ;D

Thoughts/comments, in no particular order:

1 - Great choice! Finally, back to a solid SHMUP!
2 - 2 lives!??!? How very stingy! I think that the other version(s) might give you 3. Oh well, this makes it more of a challenge!
3 - If MAWS were up, perhaps I could verify this, but I believe that higher rev numbers/letters don't necessarily imply later revs, just different revs.
4 - I used to have a 1942 custom table in my kitchen, right next to a matching Pengo table. Custom taller, bigger fake woodgrain tables made for Round Table pizza, if I recall correctly. Nice & big & easy to work on--lots of room inside!
5 - Points for medium & big planes seem to grow for successive kills, as long as you yourself don't die.
6 - Not a ton of variety in planes & behaviors & landscape, but there is a tad.
7 - My shoulder's sore after 2 games. Score submission to kick things off: 255,600!

Thanks,
-Jason

This is a favourite! Might have to have a look in (",)

Only prob is a strange glitch xp has on my cab where if you hit fire and loop at the same time your position freezes and you have to 'double tap' the joy to make it move again. Not too bad in 1942, drives me nuts in Commando  :timebomb:

Yes, after 4 weeks of chopping wood and maze running I wanted just wanted to shoot stuff!

2 - 2 lives!??!? How very stingy! I think that the other version(s) might give you 3. Oh well, this makes it more of a challenge!

That was the default when I checked the settings.  Is that what everyone else is seeing?   The first bonus is so low that you barely get half way thru the first round and already have a 3rd plane.

3 - If MAWS were up, perhaps I could verify this, but I believe that higher rev numbers/letters don't necessarily imply later revs, just different revs.

Oh, I didn't know that.   I wasn't sure which one to pick.    :)

Nice score by the way!   I like this game but not very good at it so far.   I always forget to loop when I'm in trouble.   I'm at 63k.

I want to thank you for choosing this one! I completely forgot I got the board recently for cheap, but haven't fully tested it yet.

Last night I put it my cabinet, but it didn't power up. I tested the voltages, and wasn't seeing anything! So I looked up the manual and noticed that the pinout isn't JAMMA, but it looks exactly like JAMMA!
Luckily I didn't damage it. Stupid me, always check the manual first before plugging in boards! :banghead:
I had some parts laying around so I got inspired by this round's High Score Comp to spend an hour putting together a JAMMA adapter, PITA though.

So 1942 isn't JAMMA, but 1943:The Battle of Midway is. Makes sense since the JAMMA standard was introduced in 1985, 1942 released in '84 and 1943:TBoM came out in 1987.

It's been a while since I've played this, I'm going to have to put up a decent score now.  :lol

Sweet jesus, opt. I play this game about annually, and have a decent score, but not that good.

Yeah, typically the parent set is used.

No kidding.  I had some time yesterday so I played two games and got somewhere around 180K and thought I could actually make a run at this game.  Now I've decided to mow the lawn instead.

If it makes you feel any better, my highest has only been around 60k. I even went out and bought some stools today to help with comfort/fatigue. I just need to learn to use "loop"...

Haha sorry!
Well that score is crappy for me 'cause I can remember getting over a million in this game when I played regularly. It's been a few years since I played it last though. Still one of my favourite shmups!

What practical purpose does this serve? I've never used it to my advantage, I know you get a bonus for not using any at the end of the level... my high score is like 94k so yeah, i'm out of the running.

As far as I can tell, to avoid getting hit when you're in a jam.

I beat you!  By about a grand...

I estimate that I hit the LOOP button approximately 1.5 seconds AFTER it would be useful.  And I generally die trying to shoot all of those DAMN RED PLANES! :)

Every time I use loop I get out of immediate trouble and finish my loop right on top of some other plane.

Yeah, and Bomb instead of a Loop would be much better. I normally almost never use it, and since it freezes my last position anyway on my current cab, I definitely avoid it now  :D

Quick question.

My rom 1942b shows up as "1942 (First Edition)" and the rom 1942 shows up as "1942 (Revision B)".

Which one should I be playing?

Like I say, there is something wrong with my cab, might be the XP install. No has been able to get to the bottom of it. I tried all sorts of installs, each one had problems. Sometimes no sound, sometimes only one USB port worked, or whatever. This install, the only problem is that if I hit button one and two at the same time, the position of your sprites freezes. You have to 'double tap' the joystick to unstick it. Really, really frustrating on Scramble

Next time the guts of my cab need replacing, I'll just buy a cheap laptop with it's nice new legal OS already installed  ;D

What I wouldn't give for a brand new motherboard that takes win98se without a hitch. I miss that mobo...

Oh, and alieninferno, they always describe the exact rom in the first post. In this case it's 1942B. Don't worry about what it shows up as.

Only for (roughly) the first half of the loop, once the plane is descending I believe it locks the position in which it's going to land.

To tell you the truth, I rarely use the loop. At least, not during the regular levels. When I encounter the big boss plane, I will use a loop there.

Quick question.

Revision B is the one that is listed above.

But, I don't really think it matters. There aren't any gameplay differences between the two revisions. I believe they were only hardware revision changes, but the game code is the same.

Thanks for the two replies.  I'll just play the 1942B rom and go from there.  Haven't played this in years though.  Plus, I'll admit, I was alot better at the NES version.

I think opt2not helped me out here.  Yes, I know you can move, and then all of a sudden I lock up and I crash.  Now I understand it's likely the way the game is designed, not me just freaking out - although that's still a possibility.  I think of every 10 games I play I loop maybe once anyway but one would think it should be a nice feature.  For me, the loop brings me out of "the zone", I get confused readjusting, and, well that's the end of that story. After I use the loop for the first time my entire game is just poopy.  And it's over about two minutes afterwards.
Don't know where the big boss comes in, didn't even know there was one, did I?

Ok, rainy day so I may well crack my personal best! (but not the high score here)

I think I'm doing ok though because the default is normally 3 lives that I've ever noticed. I've set this to 2 however. Will cane this as much as I can for this comp. Just have to wait for mum to not be watching TV in the lounge room  :D

Is it just me and my rom, but does the music in this game pretty much boil down to a whistle blowing routine? or am I doing something wrong? even the NES version has better music...

It's pretty much as you describe. I played an original machine a few years back and realised that MAME has it right and my memory didn't include how unimaginative the in game 'music' was.

That's slightly disappointing, I was hoping it had a kick-ass soundtrack that I was missing out on... :dunno

When you clear a level, it's more tuneful. You'll just have to clear more levels  ;D

That's 1943. This game is a year before Capcom started making cool music for their games.

I never use the loop. I just never think about. The game is designed to be work, and so I approach it that way. It's also why I rarely play it.

In 1943, I'm too busy having a good time to think about using the loop - let alone the tsunami and ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---. You know the one thing I haven't seen since (in MAME) outside of the attract is the powered up firepower - you know, like the double power shotgun. ?

I like the little whistle tune this game has.  Just a drum and a whistle and you can replicate the music live.  Plus it's been permenantly stuck in my head since I first played the game.

Well, I just casually picked up 214k. Did pretty well till 172k, then downhill a bit from there. I wasn't trying too hard, though. I could do better. Don't know as I want to work at it. Note that I stopped at one plane left, because I'm using set A still, and didn't remember to set it to two planes.

I get kinda pumped when I hear the whistles.
It's also simple enough that you can turn the stereo on and not have the game music clash too much with it.
Sometimes I have The Ride of the Valkyries, by Richard Wagner playing in the background. It works really well with this game!

309,210 after a few more games.

I've found that you get a 20k bonus for having a hit percentage of 96%-98%. I haven't been able to do better--I almost finished a level where I missed only 2 planes, but I didn't quite finish--I bet that would've been 99%...Per the MAME history.dat, you get 20k for 99% hits, but you get 10k for 100% hits...in other words, let the last plane go by!?!!??

You certainly *can* move left & right continuously throughout the entire loop process. At least I can...

There is a known bug where getting 100% displays only a 10k bonus, but it actually awards you with 50k. I did the math (the one time I actually got 100% on a level) and verified this bug.

335,410 tonight.

Got farther than ever. Saw a large gray plane--hadn't seen one of those before. Also got 98% on the easy level where the small bad guys don't shoot. Thought for sure that I had 99%...

Having trouble being able to see the bullets against the forest background--that got me a few times...
