I think the confusion is that you said that you were running a SAN, when what you probably have is not a SAN, but a NAS device sitting on your Ethernet network. And he was wondering what would possess a home user, who presumably has nowhere near the data needs to justify the expense of a SAN, to choose that route versus a NAS device.

Yeah, that's my work verbiage leaking into my home verbiage.  It's probably not really block storage either now that I think of it.  I shouldn't be using them interchangeably at this scale.
