$600 Bartops ??!
« on: March 29, 2012, 09:56:29 pm »
Now, neighbor - That's a Gonga!

Don't know whether they ship, and not sure about the games being included, but damn if they aren't good looking and inexpensive to boot.

That seems very reasonable.  Nice looking bartop design too.

I'd be interested to know what's under the hood.  I'm betting xbox.

I like that the price isn't through the roof so that's respectable and the full vinyl is nice but I can't get past the design of the bartop.  It's too boxy, retro but all the parts of retro that make it garrish rather than the cool retro.  It's not doing it for me at all, but that's not really here nor there.  If it plays good and the buyers like the product then more power to the guy.

If you check out the video you see it runs Maximus Arcade, so it's PC-based.

Reasonably priced but for the boxy design I just don't think it's $600 worthy.  I would be in the 400 range IMO but to each their own!

Anymore, I would consider $600 top dollar.

It doesn't really matter what it costs to make. I'm betting you would be lucky to sell 1 of these for $600.

Then you are saying there is no market for prebuilt/configured arcade machines.  I can't imagine that getting $600 for that machine is all that much of a profit.  We know how quickly everything adds up.

I was just pricing mini PCs earlier today and it's hard to get a decent one under $300.  Add a monitor and you're most of the way there already.  Or do you guys have better sources than that?  Maybe people just farm refurb pc's and monitors for projects like this?

Or use a laptop.

Yup.   Laptops with broken screens are perfect for this kind of build.  You can find them cheap too. Used 17" lcd monitors can be picked up for $20.

I've tried to use laptops on a few occasions. They have lots of issues. The biggest one is how to get them to power on. I haven't found a laptop with a AC Power Recovery option and I'm left trying to extend the power button. I know it can be done (I have a jukebox running now) but give me a desktop any day vs a laptop.

I don't think anybody is clowning the guy. Lew so far is the only guy who just doesn't think it'll sell but he's not clowning it, just pessimistic about the market.  Aren't you pessimistic about the market most of the time?

They can probably make a custom unit, or they may change depending on input/requests. Without getting elaborate, bartops lend themselves to boxiness. But, you know, the kids these days are 'low profile' freaks. A little bling goes a long way with them, too.

We'll see how they run....

I get tons of free LCDs. Used ones can be found, from where I live, for ~$20-40. A computer that would be capable of running a decent front-end and MAME wouldn't cost more than $100. When people here build their own cabinets, I'd imagine they'd want to get a bit more decent parts and accessories. These guys are probably going for the cheapest they can get .

Maybe, but if it works well enough, then they're making their proper percentage, while the costumer isn't paying a lot. Really, we don't know. You might ask them.
