Linux + emu = ??
« on: June 02, 2002, 06:57:24 pm »
Maybe a n00b question- Starting plan my cabinet build, and am wondering if anyone is using Linux as the OS. If so, advantages? disadvantages? I'm considering using it simply because I have it, and I don't have a Windows CD.

Thoughts?

If you know you linux, its great for an cabinet.

why?

1) Free
2) I hear they have good support for arcade monitors.
3) Runs faster then Windows.  (I love that ultraHLE ran faster on the same hardware in Linux using Wine :)

why not?

1) Not as many emulators (but a decent list)
2) Not as many frontends (but mine frontend JFront should)

I was thinking of putting linux into my cab too.  I love linux.  But there isn't much for good frontends for it (yet, for lilwolf).

The other option you have is use freedos.org.  There is a cd image of freedos, do a search for it.  But a word of warning, it is a little confusing to get it started and MAKE SURE you have the cd drivers on floppy with the entries needed for the config.sys and autoexec.bat.
It;s not the easiest OS to install, it's like the first linuxes out there, you had to know what you were doing.  BUT it's dos!

Umm dos is bad, umk.  You'll never hear me admit this again but linux is 2 steps forward while dos is 3 steps back.

When your using a difficult os to run your setup,  (Dos,Linux)  the question you have to ask yourself is does this unfriendly os give you any benefits for your sacrifice.  In linux's case there are a million things going for it, including all of the things lilwolf mentioned.  Dos on the other hand only limits you.  With the exception of a bit of ram overhead, windows doesn't take anything from your system resources when running mame. What you get with windows is the added benefits of hardware stretching, hardware acceleration, (Dos support is kinda iffy on most cards.) and the ability to play all of those great windows only emus, not to mention jukeboxes, video players, and anything else you can think of.   Dos is cumbersome, has bad memory allocation, bad hardware support, and a very limited number of gui-ed apps for it.

Just my opinion and something to think about.  Btw unless you live under a rock it's not that hard to get a "trial" version of windows.  ;-)

Linux is the only way to go (IMHO).  If you are looking for a good frontend
you can use pyrecade.  It may take you awhile to compile pygame (which it depends on) -- but it will be well worth your time.  Grustibus is not to shabby either.

pyrecade looks cool.  I'd use linux with that.

Hehe, the mature enable/disable.  Should actually make that so you just enable or disable individual categories.   I'm disabling the mahjong category in my FE once I get that feature implemented:)  My big question is how do oyu know what version of mame a game was added?

Hmm, good idea on disabling whole categories, that'll be an easy fix.  As for the version information, catver.ini of course.  I have no idea what knowing that is good for, but since it's there I figured I might as well give you the option to display it.  Of course I need to get a friggin CVS lock file removed from the repository because right now no one can even check out the source code let alone update it. :(

I believe Dave D. just released a Linux build of Game Launcher, the BEST frontend for an arcade cabinet hands down.
