Up 'n Down by Sega (1983)

3/4 view of your VW bug. You must run over the colored flags to clear the level. You can also jump on the opposing cars. On higher levels each time you run over a flag the color changes back. Watch out for open bridges and broken highways.

KLOV:  Up 'n Down
WIKI:   Up 'n Down

----------------------------------------------------

ROMSet: upndown

----------------------------------------------------

Cabinet: Upright
Lives: 3
Bonus Life: 10000
Difficulty: Easy

----------------------------------------------------

- One credit only!

- No continues or adding credits!

- No MAME cheats!

- Last day is Monday Mar 12th (11:59:59pm Pacific Daylight Time), 2012.

- High score wins.

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc. during the round.

- MAME INP recordings are encouraged but optional.

- A screenshot is required to enter a score (press F12 to save screenshot showing your final score) or take a photo of the game screen.

- If you're a MARP competitor on this title, keep in mind this is just a friendly competition among forum members, so maybe you shouldn't enter. However, if you're a forum member and this is a game you're good at and nobody knows about it, this is your time to shine!

- Even if you don't have a competitive score or if you don't *think* that you have a competitive score, please post it anyway to keep the thread fun & to give everybody a good sense of score ranges.

- Please make sure your scores are from games that take place during the competition period (no posting your best score from last year, etc.).

- Use of autofire or other non-standard hacks within MAME or your PC's OS are not allowed.  No program or other person or entity of any sort may manipulate your controls during your game.  Coaching & back-seat driving is fine as long as the party doesn't directly influence the game or controls.

- If you can beat any of the high scores from the previous competitions, you can submit your score to the BYOAC High Game Scoreboard.

---------------

Notes
I chose this title specifically because it is fun, challenging and fairly obscure. This game only gives out a single extra life, so marathon runs are not possible, and game times will be short overall.

Best of luck!

Is this really a 4-way, vertical one button game???  I've never heard of it and it never came up in my game searches with those parameters - something new for my DK+!

I am certain it is 8-way. Flyer mentions giving you a new 8-way joystick when you convert from frogger but not when you convert from Zaxxon (which already had one).

Back in the old days most of the control information in mame was wrong. People used that to fill in the information on klov, where much of it is still wrong.

Oh well... I guess the KLOV entry is wrong.

I'm going to have to say no on this one. Seeing how constrained the game field is, I was skeptical, but gave it a shot. At least on Pac-Mania, it automatically turns you if your jump is going to land you off the board or whatever.

You get an extra life at 10,000 points. It only happens at 10,000, not once at 10,000 and then every 10K afterwards.

The initial learning curve of this game is kind of steep, but then it gets much easier once it finally clicks. Nobody is REALLY good at this game other than the one guy who set the record back in 1984 on a real machine. The Twin Galaxies top MAME scores for this title seem very achievable. It wouldn't surprise me if someone pulls that off in this contest.

Also, I find the second level to be easier than the first.

That is Pengo, pretty sure you die if you try to jump out to him.

That top score is pretty nice.

Never played that one before.
After playing several games I'm getting use to it and I like it a lot now, thank for selecting it.

My best so far is 44,050

I'm getting pretty good on the first level, I did 23 seconds a few times.
I have some sort of patern I like to use but it's not working everytime, there's a lot of random stuff going on.
I will have to study my INP to see if I can get below 19 seconds to have the big bonus.

Pengo is really funny on a surf board!

It plays like a 4 way diagonal to me.
I never use the up/down left/right.

I did a little bit better ...

ok,,i will tell a bit of my less then ordinary strategy..the first 2 levels i definitly try for the time bonus..after that i just avoid flags at all costs and survive as long as possible. usually something always goes wrong in a jump but sometimes i keep picking the right lines and rackem up.

simple but effective.  kina like paigeoliver technique in sdungeoun.  that said...wheres your score paige heh..im half expecting a monster score due to you liking the game and suspense is too much waiting.    too bad there wasnt more interest in this game, i need something to do lol...

I haven't actually started playing yet so I don't have a score yet. However a monster score is unlikely. I seem to recall my previous high score being somewhere between 80 and 90k.

Yes, you might want to. I just cracked the 70K barrier myself a few minutes ago! 80K isn't a safe lead anymore.

I would like to get 100K this weekend!
I get almost get to level 5 without loosing a life.
After that is to try and survive the longest time possible.

I got to level 7 in another game, they were some vehicule that looks like the moon patrol truck always following me (not the one when you stay too long inthe same level) .  Also some rolling rock you have to avoid ... not easy!

Good luck.

The INP is for V.143 even tho i know the majority here is not using v143
you will see where i panicked on my last guy as the timer vehicles started swarming me at the end..but in trying to avoid them i destroyed quite a few in a last second struggle to the end at i think 100 points a pop..adds up quick!!

**correction..i used the shift F12 function to record..it records as a mng??  the file is 130mb and compressed to 63 so i guess if anyone really wants to actually watch it i can email it lol...

can someone tell me how to properly record an INP for future? I thought i had it setup proper from a previous game i asked but i seem to be missing something. thanks...

Great score!

To record an INP, in MAMEUi go to FIle>Play and record input.
This will create an INP and a WLF file.
I'm not 100% sure but I think only the INP is necessary for the playback.
I think that the other file contain the settings used durring the game.

Wolfmame .106, that most of us uses, is the official version for submitting scores to TwinGalaxies.

ok,,now things are starting to make sense..  ive only browsed the twin galaxy site a couple of times, seems a long time ago and had no idea about official versions and what not. I think im going to spend some time today and setup a seperate running mameui with that version in my cab and browse twin galaxies some more.  I'm currently using command line mame so it runs smooth in hyperspin. thanks for the input!!

Suggestion to whoever wins, make the next contest 13 days this time to have it end on sunday night rather than monday night.

Agreed..

if i maintain the lead.....  im open for suggestion on a game choice.  every game i seem to want to pick has been chosen already..the greats ands the classics have all been run through...(it appears that there is an unspoken rule of no repeats based on the list at hand soooo) at the moment ive got 2 that might be good.  marble madness or metrcross.  one is decent, the other is so off the wall wierd...so im open for suggestions!!

Just don't pick Marble Madness. I actually have a trackball and can't seem to get the settings right to play that one correctly.

Hmmm I was actually leaning more for marble madness...someone can still take the lead tho!

Next possible choices:
Marble madness
metro cross
pooyan

Anyone?

I like Pooyan, never played Metro Cross but it looks interesting.

Ok, I give up! :'(   53,240 is as good as it gets for me.

My suggestion for next game is NATO Defense, fun maze game.
