Garbage picked Konami Multicade...
« on: February 08, 2012, 09:56:10 am »
yes, you read that right.

this was just sitting on the street up the block from my house.

there were signs on the cabinet that says "Game Works!"

also, the cabinet is in mint condition.

can anyone give me any tips about the inside?  im at work now, and i cant find any info.

the buttons and joysticks look kinda cheap, so those will be the first that get replaced.

are they standard, or will i have to drill bigger holes?

any info would be greatly appreciated.

Oh man, I was gonna say, if someone left a centipede out for free, i'd either sell it and make a sweet profit, turn that cash into a nice mame, but it turns out you really did find trash :P All kidding aside, that looks like it could be a great base for a mame cab! Controls gotta go though.

I never played contra arcade until a few years back. Don't know if it was a rare game, but I never crossed paths with one in the wild. I was pretty shocked it was a vertical game. A vertical side-scroller just feels so dang weird.  :lol

Nice vertical Konami Multicade.  All I have found info on is the horizontal version but the buttton joystick layout looks the same.  I think it was shipped knocked down with a 14 inch TV for the monitor.  The PC boards were small and specially made for the cab home market.  Some say the controls were weak others had good luck with them so they are probably not arcade quality.  There was also a series of small bartops that were sold.  They were built by Big Electronic Games.

Here is a tread on one of their Midway bartops but the Konami is also mentioned. Link

The controls on the Midway bartop look more like arcade controls than those on your Konami.

Edit:  I see you already found that tread.

Take a look at some of the projects on this board and you will see a multitude of control panels with different arcade quality parts.  You probably need something not too expensive to get much nicer working controls.  Take a look at Buy and Sell to see what forum members sell parts.   Paradise Arcade, Arcadeemulator.net, Groovy Game Gear and Ultimarc come to mind.  You may have to replace the control panel with a wooden one to fit in newer buttons.  There was a link to some Midway cab mods in the tread that I listed earlier.

Monitor Guide and stuff

Retroblast had a piece on modifying this cabinet but I believe the website was taken down.

Found it via google cache

They both mention contacting the manufacturer for the remote to change settings which may or may not be possible at this point but its worth a shot.  Though if I remember correctly it was just a tv using composite so you would be better off just using a better tv.

I'd replace the power cable too.
If it's not a grounded cable, it needs to be replaced. Look at the prongs and see if there's the third round one. ( i can't tell by the picture)

the power cord is grounded, so no need to change that.

also, right next to the monitor you see a black cutout.
there are 4 buttons here to control the monitor settings.

What would make you think that this would be JAMMA? This thing looks cheaply made, more than likely its a system on a chip. Cheap. Cheap. Cheap... Do you hear birds in here?

He wasn't assuming it was Jamma, he is asking if it is.

It's not expensive at all to make a cabinet JAMMA standardized anyway, if you're line of thinking is cost and quality.
There is a possibility that it could very well be Jamma.

The company that made that cabinet is Big Electronic Games, I never heard of them and don't know what else they've made, but who knows...maybe they did one thing right.

I am correct in assuming its missing the front door?  If so I'm curious if you will replace it or seal it up and put a coin door in its place (assuming a pc is going in there).

actually the front door was laying down in the bottom...on top of the assembly instructions.

its got 2 pins on the left and a magnet latch on the right.  one of the pins seems to be broken.

def not jamma.  looks like a chip on a board that is connected under the joysticks.
on the board is an 15 pin output for a VGA monitor.  cant really tell how the joystick is connected.

plenty of room underneath the joystick, unlike the Midway cabinet from the same manufacturer.

havent really begun to disassemble it yet.

what im thinking is installing a jamma board in the bottom, wiring harness, new power supply, new controls.
possibly try to keep the same monitor (even though its small) and use a switch box beween the jamma board and the konami PCB.

Wasn't there a trick about holding Player 1 Start + Player 2 start + Joystick Up (not sure which joystick) for like 5 seconds or something that would pull up a settings menu?

Maybe it was a different cheap knockoff setup I'm thinking of.......possibly the Midway one, I dunno.....try it.

I recall something similar and since the boards were both designed by Claw Cowgill, I would expect them to behave similarly.

Those things are junk if you are paying cash money for them, but for free they are awesome!

It's actually one of those cheap plug-n-play game collections built into a cabinet.  Thus why the controls are crap and such.

These were sold in sams club/cosco and a few select walmarts around 2005-2006.  They aren't that bad BUT they were selling them for some ridiculous price like 500 bucks and they tanked.

The monitor in them is pretty nice though.. it's small, but nice.  I would rip out the monitor and mame a mini mame with it myself.
